Dark Progression

16. The Silent War

Night within the grounds of Astrea Academy once again dissolved into a heavy, suffocating stillness. While the students slept soundly in their respective dormitories, dreaming of magical triumphs and bright futures, a silent war raged through the shadowed corridors of the elite campus.

Ever since intercepting the foul conspiracy within the Steering Council’s chamber—where the academy’s higher-ups and corrupt aristocratic factions were using commoner students as fodder for mana-cloning experiments, all tied to the shadow sect that slaughtered his past—Rian no longer viewed himself as a mere newcomer seeking knowledge.

He had transformed into a judge of the shadows.

Inside his narrow, dimly lit dormitory room, Rian sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor. Spread out before him was a small parchment scroll listing the names of the corrupt faction’s lacklings, ranging from complicit academy supervisors to the aristocratic student enforcers who had engineered the labyrinth trap.

The laws of this academy are rotten, and its protectors are criminals draped in robes of honor, Rian thought, his eyes chilling. If justice cannot be forged in a courtroom, I will carve it out from the edge of the shadows.

That night, the hunt began.

Clad in a midnight-black cloak that fused seamlessly with the dark, Rian slipped out his bedroom window. Utilizing the advanced Shadow Step technique he had perfected from the forbidden grimoire, his body glided silently along the exterior stone walls of the dormitory building, weightless as a phantom.

His first target was a junior instructor named Marcus—not the student Marcus from the labyrinth, but the boy's uncle, who was tasked with smuggling cloning experiment documents down into the subterranean labs.

Instructor Marcus was walking alone down a vacant second-floor corridor after conducting a late-night archive audit. Suddenly, the magical wall sconces flickering along the hallway buzzed erratically and died all at once.

Creak...

Before Marcus could reach for his wand or cry out a warning, the air around him plunged to a freezing, unnatural chill. A dense shadow surged from the floorboards, wrapping around his limbs like an invisible iron grip and instantly suffocating his voice.

Rian materialized directly before the terrified instructor. Without uttering a single word, Rian locked eyes with Marcus, his gaze completely devoid of warmth, backed by an overwhelming wave of mental pressure. Utilizing a foundational shadow-manipulation trick targeting the nervous system, Rian short-circuited the man's consciousness within seconds.

When Instructor Marcus regained his senses several minutes later, he slumped limply against the corridor floor, entirely alive—yet every single experimental document in his possession had vanished without a trace. There were no signs of a struggle, no lingering traces of lethal spellcraft—only a profound, psychological terror that ensured the man would never dare go near a forbidden file for the rest of his life.

One by one, the lackeys of the academy's corrupt factions suffered "mysterious accidents" over the following week. Some experienced total memory loss regarding the subterranean laboratory projects, others were temporarily paralyzed in their rooms without medical explanation, and a few simply chose to withdraw from the academy, haunted by relentless nightmares every single night.

This string of bizarre incidents triggered widespread panic among the academy's upper management. They whispered of a curse brought by a phantom dweller, while Rian continued to move in absolute silence, pruning away threats one by one with the cold precision of a seasoned assassin.

The climax of this silent war was aimed at his next primary target: Lord Julian, the leader of the aristocratic student faction who had long served as a pampered shield for the higher-ups' dirty work.

That night, the clock struck two in the morning. The east wing dormitory—especially the luxurious private quarters of Lord Julian—was deathly quiet. Julian slept soundly beneath imported silk sheets, feeling completely secure behind his mid-tier defensive ward charms and the two elite mercenary guards stationed right outside his heavy oak door.

Yet, those expensive security measures meant nothing against Rian’s infiltration techniques.

Rian didn't break down the door or trigger any magical tripwires. Instead, he exploited a narrow gap of shadow beneath the sill of Julian's window, which had been left slightly ajar against the night breeze. His physical form melted into liquid darkness, sliding smoothly into the lavish bedroom without causing the slightest ripple in the air.

Standing beside Julian’s bed in the dim room, Rian was greeted by the suffocating stench of expensive cologne and sheer aristocratic arrogance radiating from the snoring young lord.

Rian stared down at Julian’s face with cold indifference. His hand rose slowly, hovering a few centimeters above the young heir's forehead. Weaving a hybrid spell combining mental manipulation and a neural-paralysis curse lifted from the forbidden grimoire, Rian began to knit an enchantment straight into Julian’s subconscious architecture.

No blood spilled that night. No physical wounds were carved into flesh. Yet, what Rian planted was far more horrifying than physical death: a psychological curse that would slowly rot his target's sanity from the inside out.

Once the seed was firmly rooted, Rian turned and walked toward the large vanity desk fitted with a silver crystal mirror in the corner of the room. Using his fingertips coated in dense shadow energy, he scraped a single symbol across the glass surface—a circle crossed by a broken-link chain, the emblem of the shadow sect that had quietly wormed its way into the heart of the academy.

His task complete, Rian stepped backward and dissolved once more into the nocturnal shadows, vacating the room without leaving a single trace of his existence.

The following morning, pale sunlight broke through the stillness of the east wing dormitory.

Bang!

The door to Lord Julian's suite was violently kicked open by one of his guards carrying breakfast. The guard froze in absolute horror at the sight of his master tangled in the bedsheets.

"L-Lord Julian! Wake up! What happened to you?!" the guard screamed in blind panic.

Julian bolted upright, gasping for air as cold sweat drenched his entire body. He shrieked hysterically, clawing at his own head as though his brain were being scorched by an invisible fire.

Even more shocking, when Julian stumbled drunkenly toward the vanity mirror to check his reflection, he was met with a reality that nearly made him faint on the spot: a massive portion of his prized blonde hair had turned stark, bleached white overnight, as if he had aged decades from a night of unimaginable terror.

And right before his eyes, clearly etched onto the surface of the crystal mirror, was the stark, unyielding mark of a broken chain—leaving a silent, chilling message that the true master of the academy's shadows had finally come knocking at his door.
