Dark Progression

20. Storm on the Horizon

The ruins of the Abandoned Old Tower at the northern edge of the academy forest left behind a crater of charred, smoking earth smoldering beneath the night sky. The massive detonation of Rian's shadow mana had not only flattened the ancient monument to dust, but sent a shockwave of raw magical pressure rippling through every corner of Astrea Academy.

Amidst the fractured debris, Rian stood completely unblemished, carrying a sleeping, exhausted Elia piggyback. Utilizing the fading fringes of the nocturnal shadows, he slipped back into the dormitories undetected by the night patrols, who were already scrambling in confusion to hunt down the source of the blast.

Yet an incident of this magnitude could never be swept under the academy's bureaucratic rug.

The following morning, the atmosphere across the main campus of Astrea Academy turned bone-chillingly grim. News of the northern tower's obliteration and the death of Master Vane—discovered in a horrifying state with his armor pulverized to fragments—spread like wildfire beneath the dry brush.

Inside the grand assembly hall of the academy's steering council, an emergency meeting unfolded amid a suffocating panic. The white marble round table normally reserved for senior executives was crowded with the pale faces of deans, the rector, and the high-ranking noble sponsors of the foundation.

"How in the blazes did this happen?!" snapped the Academy's Eldest Dean, a white-bearded archmage usually known for his unshakeable calm, slamming his golden staff against the floor until the chamber shuddered. "The northern tower is flattened! A senior instructor is dead at the hands of an eleven-year-old scholarship student, and you're telling me we need to cover this up?!"

Lord Vane, Julian's father and a senior member of the honorary board, clenched his right fist so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. Deep, visceral fury radiated from his eyes, tangled with a carefully masked terror.

"If we drag this case before the Royal Inquisition or the Central Council of Mages, an open investigation will follow," Lord Vane said, his voice vibrating with a cold, desperate edge. "They will probe the origin lines of our subterranean laboratory projects, the mana-cloning experiments, and our ties to the shadow sect. Do you want all our wealth and positions crushed just because we failed to assassinate a peasant boy?"

A heavy silence swallowed the conference room. The academy higher-ups were trapped in the very web of rotten bureaucracy they had woven themselves. They voted for the safest survival option for their faction: bury the truth. The incident at the old tower would be officially ruled as a wild magical experimentation accident caused by the instructor himself, while Rian would be branded an internal fugitive targeted for silent elimination by the academy's elite execution squads, bypassing any open trial.

Before the rector could hammer down the final verdict, however, an eerie anomaly erupted outside the assembly hall windows.

The bright morning sky over Astrea Academy and the surrounding student district turned pitch black within a matter of seconds. The sun seemed swallowed whole by rolling billows of black soot-fog sweeping in from the northern horizon. The ambient temperature plunged violently until morning dew froze across the glass windowpanes, and minor tremor-quakes began shaking the foundation stone of the campus.

"What is happening out there?!" shouted one of the wardens, rushing frantically toward the hall's massive glass panels.

As the academy elite scrambled to the windows and gazed up at the heavens, the sight that met them made the blood in every noble aristocrat's veins instantly run cold.

The sky above the student capital literally tore open.

A colossal, purplish-black dimensional rift spun wildly across the clouds, discharging thousands of black lightning bolts crackling with malevolent mana down across every district of the city. The echoing howls of a thousand monstrous beasts and the chilling resonance of sinister laughter filled the open firmament, signaling that the kingdom's outermost territorial defense barriers had finally shattered.

The Shadow Sect—the clandestine organization that had lurked in the shadows of history while funding the academy's forbidden experiments—was now moving openly to launch a full-scale invasion.

Inside his dormitory room, Rian—having just finished ensuring Elia was resting safely—stepped close to the window. He gazed up at the capital sky ripped apart by black lightning. Across his palms, shadow energy pulsed in perfect synchronization with the cosmic tremors outside, as though welcoming the arrival of the enemies from his past.

The storm he had spent his silence preparing for had finally arrived at his doorstep.
