Dark Progression

29. Recovery and Parting

The silence blanketing the ruined courtyard of Astrea Academy was slowly fractured by the crisp, biting wind of the late autumn evening. Duke Robert, the personal royal envoy, remained kneeling on one knee upon the dusty earth, lowering his head as he waited for the verdict of the eleven-year-old boy who had just single-handedly pulled the entire kingdom from the brink of total annihilation.

Rian cast a brief glance down at the gold-embossed royal decree offered before him. Not a flicker of greed, vanity, or hesitation touched his blood-red eyes.

To an elite veteran mercenary who understood the dark undercurrents of courtly politics inside and out, the title of Grand Duke and sovereign jurisdiction over the northern territories was no gift. It was a gilded chain—a shackle designed to bind his absolute freedom beneath the looming shadow of a crown. Political power written on parchment meant nothing compared to the raw, sovereign might forged from the edge of one's own palms.

"Rise, Duke Robert," Rian spoke, his voice carrying a flat, unyielding authority that cut cleanly through the night air. "Tell His Majesty the King that I decline his offer."

Duke Robert lifted his gaze, a suppressed wave of shock flashing across his features. He had anticipated the boy would immediately snatch up wealth and standing beyond measure. "Y-Your Excellency... this bestowal represents the highest possible gratitude from the crown—"

"I did not save this kingdom for a noble title or a seat in the royal court," Rian cut in coldly, his gaze sweeping over the skeletal remains of the campus. "I merely swept out the trash fouling my path. Save the title for someone else."

Reading the absolute finality etched into Rian's eyes, the royal envoy finally offered a slow, deferential nod. He rose to his feet, rolled the royal parchment back into its cylinder, and bowed deeply before turning to leave the grounds. Rian had forged his own path—an independent orbit cutting far beyond the reach of human laws or royal thrones.

The days that followed at Astrea Academy dissolved into a grueling cycle of mass recovery. The shattered shell of the campus underwent gradual clearing, while the surviving students began piecing their futures back together.

Inside a makeshift medical tent pitched beside the training grounds, the atmosphere felt considerably calmer. The soft, sterile scent of antiseptic and healing herbs hung low in the air. Upon a simple wooden cot, Elia rested with clean bandages wrapped neatly around her arm, her skin carrying far more color than it had on the night of the invasion.

Rian stood beside the cot, clad in his simple black coat.

"Rian... are you really leaving?" Elia asked softly, her voice trembling slightly as she looked up into Rian's eyes. She propped herself up onto her elbows, supported by a pillow tucked behind her back.

"Yes," Rian answered, brief yet gentle—a vocal cadence reserved exclusively for the narrow circle of trust he kept. "This academy has nothing left to teach me. And this place isn't safe for you if you linger too long."

Elia bowed her head for a moment, biting her lower lip. She knew the chasm of power separating them was vast as the sky and earth. That night, she had witnessed Rian mutate into an entity of absolute darkness that shredded an entire invading army in a heartbeat. Yet beneath her lingering awe, a much fiercer resolve burned in her chest: an overwhelming desire never to be left behind as dead weight.

She lifted her chin, locking eyes with Rian with unshakeable determination.

"I understand," Elia whispered, offering a fragile smile as she blinked back sudden tears. "I won't ask to come with you, because I know I'm still far too weak. But... I promise you, Rian. I'm going to study alchemy and restoration magic with everything I have, somewhere far away. I'm going to grow stronger... until one day, I can stand beside you without needing to be saved."

Rian stared down at her intently before giving a slow, affirming nod. "I'll hold you to that promise, Elia. Stay alive."

Before departing the student capital, Rian made a solitary pilgrimage up the rolling green hill behind the academy complex—the quiet resting place where a simple stone headstone stood sheltered beneath the sprawling canopy of an ancient oak tree.

It was Professor Vane's grave.

No grand state funeral accompanied him, nor any wreaths of flattery from the nobility. Only the lonely whisper of the evening breeze and a marker hand-carved by Rian himself, bearing the name of a true educator who had dedicated his life to uncovering truths buried by time.

Rian dropped to one knee before the grave. He placed the crystal core left behind by his mentor atop the stone marker, bowing his head in a silent moment of remembrance.

"The knowledge you passed down won't end here, Professor," Rian murmured softly to the wind. "I'll use this legacy to unearth the roots of corruption to the very edges of the world."

Evening bled into dusk. At the main gates of Astrea Academy—currently undergoing heavy reconstruction—a modest, covered black carriage waited along the white cobblestone road. Garon and Lyra stood beside the driver, offering a final farewell to Rian before the young man embarked on his journey beyond campus walls.

Rian pulled open the carriage door, stepping inside the dim, quiet cabin to settle onto a cushioned wooden bench. He drew the heavy window curtain closed, ensuring absolute privacy.

The driver flicked the reins, and the carriage wheels began to turn, rolling slowly away from the academy gates down the long highway leading out of the royal capital.

Deep within the silent cabin, Rian's eyes drifted toward a small, black paper envelope resting quietly upon the empty bench opposite him. It hadn't been there when he entered; it had manifested without a single sound, sealed with red wax stamped with the emblem of a broken chain.

Rian picked up the envelope with unhurried precision. He cracked the seal and unfolded a scrap of parchment inscribed with glowing silver ink:

"Don't flatter yourself over crushing a minor branch in this kingdom, Rian. The field commander and that royal mastermind were nothing more than low-tier pawns. The true organization waiting across the western sea is far vaster than you can possibly imagine. We await you at the edge of the eternal abyss."

Rian refolded the letter. Within the dark, forward-moving cabin cutting through the gathering twilight, a cold, predatory smile touched the corners of his lips.

His theater of war was no longer confined to a single academy or a single kingdom. The wider underworld had finally called his name.
