Dark Progression

3. Bonds of Blood

The night following the slaps enveloped the Markus family's dilapidated shack in a suffocating silence. There was no laughter, no warm banter by the fireplace. All that remained was the faint crackle of burning firewood, the howl of cold wind seeping through the wall chinks, and the occasional muffled sob stifled in secret.

In the dimly lit corner of the room, lying on a ragged blanket that served as a bed, Rian feigned sleep. His eyes flickered behind closed lids, ever watchful as he monitored every tiny detail inside the cabin. In his past life as a mercenary on Earth, the night was always the most dangerous hour. Enemies could strike at any moment, and trust was a luxury reserved only for fools.

Yet, in this room, the true danger was not an armed intruder, but economic desperation and physical weakness.

Elen sat beside her husband at a small wooden table. In her hands, she held a bowl of warm water and a tattered linen cloth. With utmost care, she dabbed away the dried blood at the corner of Markus’s lips. The middle-aged man’s face was badly bruised, his left cheek swollen purple from Jorah's brutal backhand earlier that day. Markus kept his head bowed low, his shoulders trembling violently—not from the bitter cold, but from sheer, unadulterated shame.

"I’m sorry, Elen," Markus whispered, his voice raspy and barely audible. "I’m a husband... and a father. Yet I couldn't even protect our family's dignity on this land. I failed you."

Elen paused her movements. She gazed at her husband with eyes heavy with exhaustion, yet devoid of any hatred or despair. Instead, she placed her rough, scarred hand over Markus’s trembling ones.

"Don't speak like that, Markus," Elen said softly, her voice flowing like a soothing lullaby. "We’ve survived this far not because we are strong or wealthy, but because we have each other. Never blame yourself for the cruelty of the nobles. This world is filthy, but as long as we are together, we will always find a way through."

Elen then began to hum softly—an old folk song about a spring that never quite made it to their village, the very lullaby she had sung to soothe Rian since he was an infant. Her voice quavered, steeped in pain and unconditional tenderness.

From the dark corner where he lay, Rian observed their interaction, his thoughts swirling in turmoil.

In his past life, Rian had been raised in the cold, ruthless environment of a military orphanage. There were no maternal hugs, no words of comfort when he was afraid, and above all, no genuine love. Every relationship was built on leverage, strength, and survival. As a result, Rian had grown into a cynical, ice-cold man who viewed everyone around him as a potential enemy waiting for the right moment to drive a knife into his back.

Yet, the scene unfolding before him was slowly eroding the mental fortress he had spent years erecting.

Elen possessed no magical power, no wealth, and no legal protection. Yet, in Rian’s eyes, she possessed something far more potent and dangerous: an unwavering emotional resolve to protect those she loved. And Markus, though physically helpless against the debt collectors, risked his life every day in the frozen fields just to put food on the table.

Love like this... is a weakness, yet it is also a terrifying source of strength, Rian analyzed coldly.

In this brutal fantasy realm, where human life was worth less than that of a bug, this fragile family was the sole anchor keeping his sanity intact. Rian realized that if he wanted to live in peace and rebuild his power, he could not allow this haven to be destroyed by the greed of the nobility.

The three-year-old clenched his small fists beneath his ragged blanket. Within his chest, the spark of resolve that was once a faint ember began to burn with a fierce, blinding light.

They are mine, Rian declared in his heart with absolute finality. This weak father and this fragile mother... they are my sanctuary. Anyone who dares touch them again will never see another sunrise.

After a while, the heavy mood began to settle. Exhausted and battered, Markus drifted off to sleep, while Elen stood up to clean the water bowl. She walked quietly toward Rian's bed, checking to ensure her son was fast asleep amidst the freezing night air.

Elen knelt beside his bedding. With gentle tenderness, she tucked the small blanket around the boy’s body. Her rough fingers lightly brushed against Rian’s forehead, smoothing away strands of dark hair damp with cold sweat.

"Sleep well, my little champion," Elen whispered with deep affection, offering a warm smile to the seemingly sleeping boy.

Rian, still maintaining his act, felt the comforting warmth of his mother’s touch. Yet at the same time, the protective rage and swelling resolve within his soul surged past the normal limits of a three-year-old child. His consciousness shuddered intensely, triggering a chain reaction within the core of mana energy he had been secretly cultivating inside his tiny body.

Unknowingly, a dense, high-pressure wave of mental force erupted from his mind, rippling across the room like an invisible shockwave.

FLICKER!

The small oil lamp on the wooden table suddenly flickered violently, its flame dancing in an erratic blue hue. Shadows stretched and twisted sharply across the walls as if alive, and the air inside the shack grew suffocatingly heavy for a brief second before returning to normal.

Elen gasped, jumping back and pulling her hand away from Rian's forehead. Her eyes widened in panic as she scanned the room, terrified that an evil spirit or specter had crossed their threshold in the dead of night.

"W-What was that?" Elen whispered tremulously, pulling her shawl tight around herself as she stared at the now-quelled lamp.

Behind his tightly closed eyelids, Rian immediately regulated his breathing to hide his own shock. He realized that his surge of emotion had accidentally leaked raw mana beyond his control.

Yet, one thing was undeniable: the power sleeping within his young body was growing far faster than he had ever anticipated.
