Dark Progression

32. New Horizons

Howling gales roared thousands of feet above the churning ocean swells. At the pinnacle of the highest cliff along the western border—a jagged precipice known to cartographers as The Edge of the Known—the world fractured into two distinct realms: the peaceful, sprawling expanse of the kingdom's mainland to the east, and an endless, ink-black sea of dense fog rolling across the west, concealing the mysterious continent where the roots of every dark conspiracy lay buried.

Rian stood alone at the razor's edge of the sheer cliff. His dark coat whipped wildly in the fierce high-altitude storm, and his cowl fell backward to reveal a calm, composed face anchored by blood-red eyes reflecting the dim, starlit night sky.

In his left hand rested an ancient world map stitched from rare beast hide—a relic unearthed from the classified archives of Astrea Academy’s steering council, now annotated with fresh, sharp strokes of black ink mapping cosmic energy currents. The chart laid bare a humbling truth: the kingdom where he had spent his childhood and youth was merely a grain of sand. This world was infinitely vaster, older, and infinitely more lethal than any courtly sovereign had ever dared to imagine.

Rian slowly folded the ancient parchment and slipped it into the inner pocket of his coat.

Deep within his meridian pathways, the mana-circulation core of the forbidden grimoire and the crystal relic left behind by Professor Vane thrummed in flawless, synchronized harmony. He understood with absolute clarity that everything he had achieved at Astrea Academy and Oakhaven was nothing more than a prologue to a far grander conflict—a cosmic war against ancient entities orchestrating civilization from behind the shadows of the foreign continent.

Yet fear had never found a dictionary entry within the soul of an elite ex-mercenary who had crossed the threshold of death and reincarnation. In this life, he no longer ran from the ghosts of his past; he was the undisputed master of the dark itself.

Rian stepped forward, toes brushing the very brink of the abyssal drop. Beneath him, the gorge of black fog stretched out infinitely, hoarding countless secrets, primordial beasts, and formidable enemies awaiting his arrival.

Without an ounce of hesitation in his chest, Rian drew a deep breath.

He flung his arms wide, allowing the shadow-circulation seals across his frame to flare wide open. In an instant, a pair of colossal, obsidian-black energy wings unfurled broadly across his back, discharging a purplish luminescence that vacuumed the surrounding storm winds into absolute stillness.

A fragile, predatory smile curved across Rian's lips—cold, resolute, and absolute.

Without casting a single backward glance, Rian took the final step forward—propelling himself off the apex of the towering cliff straight down into the roaring tempest of fog below.

Whoosh!

His small frame shot through the storm clouds at the speed of sound, trailing a sweeping ribbon of black lightning across the midnight sky, ready to embrace the boundless perils of the uncharted continent awaiting him.

The screen slowly fades to black as the closing words echo softly:

"Darkness is not an end, but the canvas upon which I write my own destiny. I will forge my path onward."

— The End —
