Echoes of The Chronicle

29. The Creator

The silence inside the Nexus hall suddenly felt far more suffocating than any ruins Davin had ever traversed. Before him, beneath the dim glow of billions of human consciousness threads beginning to weaken, stood a human figure that made Davin’s blood run cold.

That figure was himself.

Present-day Davin stared sharply at his older twin. The man before him possessed the exact same jawline, body posture, and gaze, yet looked far more mature. White hair streaked his temples, and most terrifyingly, the entire length of the future version's arms and neck was covered in carved symbols of The Ledger burning brightly, as though those symbols had fused completely with his bloodstream.

Davin clenched his fists, his breathing ragged and irregular. "Who... who the hell are you? Stop mocking my face!" he barked, his raspy voice echoing among the giant pillars.

The older man did not grow angry. Instead, he let out a long sigh—the weary sigh of someone who had carried the weight of a universe through thousands of time cycles. He smiled faintly, a smile full of bitterness and regret.

"I am no impostor, Davin," the man replied in a voice identical to Davin's own, calm yet laden with agony. "I am you. Or rather... you are the version of me who has not yet completed this circle."

Davin stunned, stepping half a step back. His brain refused to believe what he was hearing, yet the throbbing on the back of his right hand could not lie. The resonance between them felt undeniable, as though a mirror were speaking to him.

"Don't talk nonsense!" Davin snapped, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. "I am the Architect! I came here to destroy this system, not to listen to your riddles! My father, Dr. Arthur Ronan, engineered all of this—"

"Our father did not engineer the end of this story, Davin. He started the mistake, but I created the system," future Davin interrupted firmly, cutting off his twin.

The older man walked toward the stone altar where the giant notebook lay open, pointing toward the blank page that moments ago had inscribed both their names.

"You think The Ledger is a foreign entity? You think dimensional leaps, the transcendence tax robbing your permanent memory, and simulated worlds like Oakhaven, Neo-Veridia, and Aethelgard were crafted by outside cosmic forces?" future Davin chuckled softly, a hollow laugh. "No. All of that is my own design. I created this cycle of reincarnation and dimensional jumping."

Davin felt a crushing blow to his chest. His knees felt weak for a moment. "You... my lost memories... the pain I've endured... that was all your doing?!"

Future Davin nodded slowly. His expression softened, looking at present-day Davin with a gaze full of profound regret.

"When the ancient disaster destroyed our original earth, billions of human lives shattered into pieces, dissolving into a lethal information storm," future Davin explained, spreading his hands toward the billions of pulsing consciousness threads around the hall. "I tried to save them by uploading their consciousness into simulations. But the system grew too vast. Their consciousness began to rot, fracturing into thousands of anomaly fragments threatening total destruction."

He stared straight into present-day Davin's eyes.

"I could not fix that chaos from within a single whole body. My mind's capacity could not bear the weight of billions of souls at once. So, I engineered The Ledger to fracture my own soul, periodically erase my memory through the transcendence tax, and cast me into various simulated dimensions as the 'Architect' tasked with gathering back those lost consciousness shards."

Davin froze. The puzzle pieces of his entire journey suddenly snapped neatly into place inside his head. Why were those worlds so familiar? Why did security systems seem to recognize his DNA? Why must he lose his memories with every transition?

Because he was repairing the chaos he had created himself in the future. This journey represented an endless time loop—an eternal loop to atone for an ancient sin.

"So... all this suffering... Lyra's death, Oakhaven's destruction... these things happened over and over again?!" Davin’s voice shook violently, rage and agony churning in his chest.

"Over and over, for thousands of cycles, until today," future Davin answered quietly. He stepped closer to the stone altar, then reached for a small object hidden behind the giant notebook.

That object was an old pen radiating a brilliant golden-blue light, glowing like a pure star trapped within metal.

Future Davin lifted the light pen, then extended his hand, holding it out right before present-day Davin's open palm.

"This circle has grown far too long, Davin. The weight of this consciousness is crushing my soul," his future self spoke in a whisper full of pleading. "Take this pen. Write down the final line of destiny on The Ledger's blank page. Erase all remaining simulations, set the sleeping billions free, and end both our existences forever."

Davin stared at the light pen offered before him. He fell silent in a suffocating quiet, confronted with the ultimate choice to end everything or let this endless time loop persist.
