Echoes of The Chronicle

36. The Eternal Echo (Epilogue)

Morning sunlight pierced through the concrete cracks of Dr. Arthur Ronan's underground laboratory ruins, warming the damp air that had remained trapped for decades. In the real world, now fully healed, nature had reclaimed the very places that once stood as silent witnesses to humanity's ambition and despair.

The sound of crisp laughter and cheerful footsteps broke the silence within the moss-grown laboratory corridor.

A group of young ruin explorers—a new generation born into a earth free from the shadows of simulation—were tracing those old hallways. Carrying small backpacks and handheld flashlights, they explored the remnants of ancient civilization with immense curiosity.

"Hey, come here fast! Look at this room!" a curly-haired teenager called out, waving his hand from behind a half-open steel door.

His friends hurried over, including a ten-year-old boy named Elio, the youngest in the group. They stepped into an old workspace filled with rusted iron desks, decaying filing racks, and old cables now overrun by small climbing vines.

The atmosphere inside the room felt deeply warm, shrouded in the peaceful aura of a bygone mystery. Fine dust particles danced beneath the shafts of sunlight, creating a magical vista.

Elio walked up to an iron workbench situated in the corner of the room, right beneath a cracked skylight. Atop the rusted desk lay a stack of yellowed paper sheets and obsolete, non-functional tools.

Yet, the young boy's attention instantly locked onto an object in the center of the table.

An old notebook with a thick black leather cover, heavily blanketed in dust.

"Guys, look what I found," Elio whispered in awe, reaching out his small hand to touch the book's cover.

His older sister nearby smiled faintly. "Well, looks like an ancient journal from before the recovery disaster. Careful, Elio, the binding might crumble."

Elio nodded slowly. Carefully, he brushed away the dust shrouding the front cover using his jacket sleeve. Beneath the thick layer of dust, a name was clearly carved in ancient silver ink that had weathered the test of time:

D A V I N   R O N A N

"Davin... Ronan," Elio read, spelling out the name softly in a whisper, as though the word carried a strange, comforting vibration through the room's air.

The laboratory's atmosphere suddenly grew even quieter, as though time slowed down exclusively for that moment. A gentle breeze blew in from the cracked window, rustling the loose old sheets of paper scattered across the desk.

A profound curiosity welled up in Elio’s chest. With his small fingers, he gripped the edge of the old notebook cover and opened it slowly.

Creeak...

The old paper hinges creaked softly. The book's first page opened before them.

No long texts or complicated mathematical formulas graced that page. In the bottom right corner of the yellowed paper, a meticulously hand-drawn ink sketch was rendered—an image of an hourglass symbol encircled by galactic coordinate lines.

Seeing that hourglass sketch, Elio smiled faintly. An unfamiliar, warm sensation suddenly gripped his heart, as though he were reading a tale belonging to someone who had sacrificed immensely yet remained entirely unknown to the wider world.

"It's so beautiful..." Elio murmured in admiration.

Yet, at that exact next second, a small miracle unfolded before them.

As the old notebook swung wide open, the hourglass sketch in the corner of the page suddenly emitted a faint, warm golden-blue glow. That light shone gently, illuminating Elio and his friends' faces with a comforting warmth, resembling a greeting from a dawn welcoming a brand-new day.

The book did not burn or disintegrate. That light pulsed softly for a few seconds, as though conveying a final farewell from the Architect to the world he had saved, before finally dimming back into ordinary, tranquil book pages.

The children stood stunned in awestruck silence. They exchanged glances, feeling an extraordinary peace envelop the entire old laboratory room.

Outside the ruins, the morning sun shone ever brighter across the green, peaceful earth. The wind blew, carrying new life, signaling that although the past had passed and the old cycle was closed, the echo of Davin Ronan's sacrifice would remain eternal forever—standing as a sacred legend guarding the universal balance from behind the veil of time, now and forever.
