Evacuation LImit
19. The Iron Rescue Bird
The roaring thrum of helicopter rotor blades sliced through the night air, shattering the silence that had settled over the ruins of the old chemical plant after the deadly duel ended. The howling storm winds gradually subsided, leaving behind a light, misty drizzle falling alongside wisps of thin smoke drifting from the remnants of the fire in the courtyard below.
Upon the framework of the partially collapsed concrete roof, Jason lay weak with short, ragged breaths. Every time he drew a breath, the scorching agony in his right shoulder stabbed straight to his spine. Fresh blood had pooled around his frame, mingling with the rainwater trickling into the structural gaps of the wreckage.
Leo, who had been clutching the data laptop tightly to his chest with violently shaking hands, snapped his head up as a bright green searchlight swept across the plant's front yard.
"Jason... hear that?" Leo's voice trembled with overwhelming relief amid his unsubsiding sobs. He pointed toward the devastated factory yard. "That chopper... the emblem on its tail isn't Ouroboros!"
Jason forced his heavy eyelids open. Through the waning haze of his consciousness, he glanced down toward the lower courtyard. A dark-gray, twin-engine tactical transport helicopter bearing a silver eagle emblem etched into its cabin body settled slowly among the concrete rubble. It was an iron bird belonging to Jason's network of old agency allies—independent operatives who still held fast to their oaths of loyalty and refused to bow to Commander Marcus's corruption.
"Yeah..." Jason rasped, his voice catching in his throat, barely audible. "They're... right on time..."
"Hang on, Jason! Help is here!" Leo cried out in panic. The young man scrambled frantically down through the remaining emergency stair wreckage, bolting through puddles of rainwater toward the plant courtyard with the data laptop still clutched hard against his chest.
The moment the helicopter touched down smoothly and its landing gear bit into the ruined earth, the side cabin door slid open with a heavy hydraulic hiss.
Before the blades could even fully spool down, three burly men clad in tactical medical gear and protective vests vaulted out of the cabin. They moved fast, hauling comprehensive emergency medical kits, a folding stretcher, and sidearm defense.
"Target coordinates confirmed! We are Echo Unit!" shouted the rescue team commander—a short-haired woman with a burn scar along her neck—speaking through her helmet comms mic as she sprinted toward Leo. "Where is Agent Jason?!"
"Up on the collapsed roof! He lost way too much blood, he took a sniper round to the shoulder and fell from a height!" Leo blurted out hysterically, his chest heaving as he pointed upward. "Please, hurry and help him!"
Wasting not a single second, two medics sprinted up the remaining emergency ladder toward where Jason lay.
"Agent Jason, talk to me. Do you read me?" the male medic asked anxiously, dropping to his knees beside Jason. He immediately ripped away the remainder of Jason's tactical jacket fabric to check the gaping wound torn into his right shoulder. "Massive bleeding. Blood pressure is dropping dangerously fast. We need an IV line running right now and high-pressure pressure dressings!"
Jason let out a stifled groan as the intravenous needle pierced his skin. An intense wave of chill flooded his frame, yet the ironclad consciousness he maintained forced his eyes open slowly to gaze up at the medic.
"Leo..." Jason called out weakly, his voice a faint whisper. "Make sure... make sure the kid... and the data are safe..."
"Relax, Agent. Focus on yourself. We've got the watch from here," the medic stated firmly, signaling his crew to lift Jason carefully onto the folding stretcher.
Down below, Leo stood watching the evacuation process with a heaving chest. Echo Team's short-haired female commander approached Leo, extending her right hand to secure the vital payload the young man carried.
"Son, hand over that data drive. We need to lock it down before our signal gets flagged," the female commander spoke with a professional yet calming tone.
Leo stared down at the laptop in his arms for a beat, then nodded resolutely. He slid the hardware into a specialized protective pouch handed over by the commander. "Here... all the dark network transaction data and syndicate hit-list records are inside this. Guard this with your life. Jason's life depends on it."
"This data is safe with us," the commander answered with certainty, stowing the pouch inside the helicopter cabin's reinforced safe. "Get on board now. We need to lift off immediately."
With the medical crew's assistance, Leo climbed up into the warm helicopter cabin, while Jason was secured onto the emergency medical bunk with an oxygen mask and a blood transfusion bag rigged directly to his arm.
"Cabin doors secured! Stand by for emergency takeoff!" the pilot barked from the forward cockpit.
The helicopter's turbine engines suddenly whined into a deafening roar as the main rotors spun up to maximum velocity. The tactical transport slowly lifted its frame off the ground, climbing vertically through the misty drizzle and the smoke-choked skies above the demolished chemical plant below.
Inside the dim cabin, Leo sat kneeling beside Jason's medical berth. He gripped Jason's cold left hand tightly, wiping away the sweat and dried blood caked across the senior operative's brow.
"We made it out, Jason..." Leo whispered softly, a tired little smile breaking across his pale lips. "We left that hell behind."
Jason didn't reply in words; he merely gave Leo's fingers a gentle squeeze with his remaining reserves of strength, closing his eyes for a moment to let the sedatives and IV fluids work on healing his battered frame.
The helicopter glided smoothly through the dark storm clouds over the city's coastal skyline, banking away toward an offshore sector where a secret extraction vessel waited. The cabin atmosphere felt deeply serene, contrasting sharply with the terror and brutal gunfights they had endured throughout the night.
Yet, that peace lasted barely a heartbeat.
Suddenly, up in the forward cockpit, the primary navigation instrument panel flickered red in unison.
Beep... beep... beep...
The digital comms display across the pilot's control console blinked awake automatically, flashing a prominent crimson-encrypted warning window:
WARNING: SECURE FREQUENCY COMPROMISED
INCOMING SIGNAL TRACE DETECTED
Origin: Ouroboros Global Command Network - Sector 01.
The pilot—a lean-bearded man with a scar over his temple—blew his eyes wide in shock as his radar scope suddenly flooded with dozens of red tracking blips converging rapidly on their airspace.
"Damn it!" the pilot choked out a curse, his hand flashing to hit the intercom toggle for the rear cabin. "Echo Team, we've got a major problem!"
In the rear cabin, the female commander surged to her feet, closing in on the cockpit with a tightening expression. "What is it, Captain? Are we being tracked?"
"Not just tracked," the pilot answered with a tense voice, pointing to the tactical radar display showing high-speed airborne vectors closing from the city's northwest quadrant. "The Ouroboros syndicate's citywide satellite grid didn't go dark like we assumed. They just tripped emergency air defense protocols."
Across the cockpit monitor silhouettes of three stealth gunships belonging to the assassin syndicate materialized out behind the storm clouds, locking firing coordinates onto Jason and Leo's rescue chopper flight path.
"They've dispatched an aerial hunter squadron to intercept us," the pilot continued, yanking the collective to dive hard into a thick cloud bank. "Our iron bird is officially the primary target for a citywide extermination run!"
Hearing the warning, Leo whipped his head around in shock toward the medical bunk, while Jason, hovering on the ragged edge of exhaustion, opened his eyes slowly. The operative's gaze hardened right through the rain-streaked cabin window, realizing that even after crawling out of the factory floor, the real war in the midnight skies had only just begun.
