Father's Legacy Bag

15. The Uncle's Storm

The silence in the living room felt heavier and more suffocating than the fiercest storm. The official university acceptance letter, stamped with the institution's official seal, lay discarded on the warped wooden table—a harsh, stark contrast to the towering stacks of wedding gifts packed with gold and cash.

Haji, the man who had been sitting with such arrogant ease, reached out and snatched the paper. He read it thoroughly. His thick brows knitted together, his eyes darting rapidly across every line of text on the page. Beside him, Uncle Tono and Uncle Budi shifted restlessly, occasionally stealing anxious glances at the letter, their faces flushing a furious crimson as rage began to boil over.

"Prime State University?" Haji muttered, his voice dripping with disbelief. He stared at Nadia from head to toe, as though seeing the young girl for the very first time.

Uncle Tono finally snapped. He violently wrenched the letter from Haji's hands. "College? You think you have money for college, you ungrateful little brat?! This letter is nothing more than trash! You want to trade a guaranteed cash bride price for some pathetic, uncertain future?!"

Nadia stood tall, refusing to flinch even an inch as Uncle Tono advanced with a raised hand, ready to unleash a vicious slap. "This isn't trash, Uncle. This is my ticket out of the poverty you've used for years as an excuse to sell me off. I am not getting married. I am going to university."

"Shut your mouth!" Uncle Tono bellowed. His roar shook the knick-knacks rattling on the table. "You think a college degree is going to fill your stomach?! You think this piece of paper is going to pay off your late father's debts?! Stop dreaming!"

Uncle Tono crumpled the letter into a jagged, mangled ball of paper. Nadia felt her heart twist in her chest, yet she held her ground.

"You have no right to destroy my future," Nadia fired back, her voice dropping into a low, piercing register. "My father gave his life for this family. I won't let you betray his sacrifice by turning me into a prisoner of this house."

"How dare you!" Uncle Tono hurled the crumpled paper straight at Nadia's face. He lunged forward, his rough fingers clamping violently around the collar of her shirt, hoisting her up until she was forced onto her tiptoes. "What do you know about debt?! Your father was a coward! He died leaving us with his mess! And you—you're the only asset left to cover his failures!"

"Let go of my daughter, Tono!"

Mother Ratna, who had stood silently in the corner looking like a walking corpse, suddenly bolted forward. She lunged at Uncle Tono's arm, desperately trying to pry his grip off Nadia. The mother's voice cracked, carrying the accumulated weight of years of stifled agony. "Enough! Don't touch Nadia! You've gone too far, Tono!"

"Stay out of this, Ratna!" Uncle Budi snarled, stepping in to block Mother Ratna's path. "This is all your fault for spoiling this girl! If you'd just handed her over from the start, we wouldn't have to deal with any of this circus!"

"She is not getting married! I will never allow it!" Mother Ratna screamed. Her voice was raspy, yet infused with an immense, surging strength—the primal power of a mother refusing to let her child be offered up as a sacrifice. "Nadia has dreams, and I will support her, even if it costs me my life!"

"Support her?" Uncle Tono let out a cynical, mocking bark of laughter. "What are you going to eat when this house gets repossessed tomorrow morning? Are you going to scavenge in the streets? Want your younger kids to starve?"

"We'd rather live in poverty than watch my daughter get sold to a man she doesn't love just to settle a debt that isn't even hers!" Mother Ratna shot back, chest heaving with ragged breaths.

Blinded by alcohol and pure greed, Uncle Tono violently shoved Nadia away, sending her crashing hard onto the floor. He took a menacing step toward Mother Ratna, jabbing a vicious finger right in her face.

"You think you can defy me? This house legally belongs to me! I hold the deeds! If you dare disobey me, I'll drag you out onto the streets right now! Do you hear me? Right now!"

The argument escalated into pure chaos. Uncle Tono and Uncle Budi pressed their assault, screaming vile curses and increasingly brutal threats. Mother Ratna fought back with her remaining shreds of energy, defending Nadia's future while tears streamed endlessly down her cheeks.

Yet the pressure was simply too much. Mother Ratna’s heart, already weakened by a lifetime of crushing burdens, was being forced to weather an unyielding storm.

Nadia, still crumpled on the floor, watched in horror as her mother began to sway. The fiery defiance blazing in Mother Ratna's eyes instantly drained away, replaced by an ashen pallor. Her hands flew up to grip tightly against the left side of her chest.

"Mom?" Nadia whispered, sheer panic instantly seizing her throat.

"Ratna? Don't pull your fake fainting routine on us!" Uncle Tono sneered, assuming her collapse was merely an act.

Yet Mother Ratna gave no reply. Her half-closed eyes locked onto Nadia with a look that defied simple translation—a gaze overflowing with heartbreaking apology and fierce maternal love. Without uttering another word, the woman's body buckled. She crashed heavily onto the wooden floorboards with a sickening thud.

"Mom!"

Nadia scrambled forward on hands and knees, catching her mother's body just before her head slammed against the hard timber.

The room plunged into an eerie vacuum of sound. Uncle Tono and Uncle Budi froze, the contemptuous smirks on their faces instantly morphing into suppressed panic.

Nadia patted her mother's cheeks with hands shaking so violently she could barely feel her fingers. "Mom! Wake up, Mom! Don't leave Nadia! Mom!"

Mother Ratna offered no response. Her cooling skin and the terrifying absence of a steady breath made Nadia feel as though her entire universe was collapsing into dust. Haji, who had simply watched the spectacle unfold, stood up abruptly, sheer terror washing over his face as he realized the situation had spiraled completely out of control.

Uncle Tono turned pale as a sheet, instinctively retreating two paces. "Ratna... wake up, Ratna! Stop overacting!"

"Help!" Nadia screamed toward the room packed with the very men who had come to tear her life apart. "Somebody, please call a doctor! My mother passed out! Please!"

Yet amid her frantic cries, Nadia felt a sudden, freezing draft brush against her fingers as she clutched her mother's hand. She snapped her head toward the window, catching a fleeting glimpse of a shadow shifting outside—something peering in from behind the tattered curtain—a figure that seemed to have been lying in wait precisely for this moment to arrive.

Nadia had zero time to wonder who was lurking in the dark. She knew only one truth: this battle had shifted from a war over her future into a desperate fight to save her mother's life. And amid the creeping darkness swallowing the house whole, Nadia realized that the true enemy might have just breached their walls, hiding comfortably within the ensuing chaos.
