I Am Not My Mother’s Brother

13. The Gateway to Higher Education

Time is the ultimate forge for resilient souls. Firman passed three years of high school like a meteor cutting through the night—silent, yet burning with blinding brilliance. The skinny boy who had once stepped into the orphanage with his head bowed low had transformed into an eighteen-year-old young man with a broad, confident posture and a defined jawline.

One thing had never changed: his dark, marble-cold eyes, radiating an intelligence and quiet intensity that could intimidate anyone.

That afternoon, the main hall of the City Department of Education buzzed with excitement. The plenary graduation meeting and the announcement of the national high school exam results had just concluded. In the reserved seating area, principals from elite high schools whispered nervously, eagerly awaiting the official printouts of the top scores across the city.

In the back row, Mrs. Rahma sat gracefully in her finest batik kebaya. Beside her, Firman sat in calm composure, his hands resting on his lap. Not a trace of cold sweat marked his palms. To him, today was merely a formality—a natural outcome of every late night spent under the glow of his white desk lamp.

An official from the Department of Education stepped up to the podium with a microphone, clearing his throat to quiet the crowd.

"Good afternoon, everyone. Today marks a historic day for education in our city. Based on the validated national computer-based exam data, our city's highest average score has officially broken the provincial record!" The official's booming voice resonated through the hall, sending a ripple of anticipation across the room.

"The student who achieved the overall first place in the city, with perfect scores of one hundred in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and ninety-eight in English... goes to a student from State High School 1: Firman Aditya!"

APPLAUSE BREAKS OUT!

A thunderous roar of applause erupted, filling every corner of the room. The principal of Firman’s high school stood up instantly, clapping vigorously with a face flushed red with pride. Students from other schools turned, searching the crowd for the name Firman Aditya.

Mrs. Rahma immediately covered her mouth with both hands, tears of joy streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. She turned to Firman, her voice trembling softly, "You did it, my boy... You really did it..."

Firman offered a subtle, confident smile. He stood, adjusted the collar of his faded batik shirt, and walked steadily toward the stage. Every step felt grounded and purposeful. As he accepted the velvet-bound honor certificate from the Head of the Education Department, the rapid flashes of local news cameras illuminated his face.

On that stage, Firman stood as an absolute victor. He was no longer viewed through the lens of pity as an "orphanage child," but recognized as a brilliant mind sought after by prestigious institutions.

Yet the day's surprises were far from over. Once the ceremony concluded, Firman’s principal invited him and Mrs. Rahma into the VIP lounge.

Inside the cool, air-conditioned room, a man wearing glasses and a formal shirt bearing the emblem of a top national university awaited them. He was a representative from the national merit selection committee.

"Good afternoon, Firman, Mrs. Rahma," the representative greeted warmly, shaking their hands firmly. "I'll get straight to the point. Given your flawless track record in academic olympiads since middle school and your near-perfect national exam scores today, Universitas Indonesia officially admits you through the National High-Achiever Track."

Mrs. Rahma’s heart pounded as she squeezed Firman’s hand tightly.

The representative opened a thick document folder and placed it before Firman. "Not only have you been accepted into Computer Science—the most competitive major this year—but you have also been awarded a full government merit scholarship. Your entire tuition is fully covered for all eight semesters, along with a monthly living stipend funded by the state."

Firman stared at the official document bearing the university's seal. It was an golden ticket—a definitive way out from the cycle of poverty and the label of an abandoned child forever.

Flashes of the past briefly flickered through his mind. He remembered his nine-year-old self, weeping while clutching his stinging cheek after Rizka slapped him for looking at the Family Registry. He remembered her sharp words branding him a stain and a burden to her future.

Look at this paper, Rizka, Firman thought with a subtle, icy smirk that didn't reach his face. Your legal registry tried to lock me away as your brother to cover up your shame. But this scholarship and acceptance letter open the doors to a world where you won't even have the right to knock.

Firman picked up the pen and signed the scholarship acceptance with a firm, decisive hand.

That evening, the Kasih Mulia Orphanage transformed into a joyous celebration. Mrs. Lastri prepared a large yellow rice platter with fried chicken—a special treat reserved for major milestones. The children gathered around Firman in the main hall.

Andra, the toddler Firman had comforted years ago, was now an elementary student. He looked up at Firman with eyes wide with admiration. "Big Brother Firman, you're going to university in the big city? When I grow up, I want to be just like you!"

Firman gently patted Andra’s head, a rare, genuine smile appearing on his face. "You can achieve even more, Andra. Just stay focused on your studies and always listen to Mrs. Rahma."

In the corner of the room, Mrs. Rahma watched Firman surrounded by the younger children. The old woman smiled through her tears. She knew her duty of guiding Firman through his youth had been completed with absolute grace.

Firman had proven that a difficult start in life could be overcome through relentless perseverance and hard work. His journey was now ready for a larger stage—heading toward the metropolis and the academic world, where he would continue to build his future with quiet dignity and honor.
