I Am Not My Mother’s Brother

15. Mentorship and the Golden Opportunity

The tech world holds no regard for origins—it measures only the sharpness of logic and the speed at which problems are solved. For nineteen-year-old Firman, now in his fifth semester, the computer laboratory at Universitas Indonesia had become a second home. Here, amid glowing monitor displays and the faint hum of servers, his journey took another monumental turn.

That afternoon, the air inside the lab felt stifling despite the air conditioning running at full capacity. Firman had just wrapped up a Network Programming practical. As the other students rushed out for lunch, Firman remained at his desk, staring straight at rows of complex code on a monitor displaying repeated system error warnings.

It was not a class assignment. It was a high-level data security system project currently being developed by a team of senior professors.

"Use an asynchronous structure, Firman. Your logic on line 42 will deadlock the moment traffic spikes."

A deep, authoritative voice spoke from behind him. Firman startled, turning quickly and rising to his feet in respect.

Standing before him was Professor Bramantyo. He was no ordinary senior lecturer. Professor Bramantyo was a prominent figure in the national tech industry—the founder and Chairman of PT Cyber Nusantara Utama, one of Indonesia's leading multinational cybersecurity firms.

"Professor Bram..." Firman said, catching his breath. "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to pry into the lab's project. I was simply curious why the encryption kept failing at the final stage."

Professor Bramantyo showed no anger. Instead, he stepped closer, adjusted his glasses, and examined Firman’s screen with intense scrutiny. The corner of his mouth—a man known for rarely smiling—curled upward.

"You managed to fix it this far? On your own?" Professor Bramantyo asked, eyeing Firman with sharp interest.

"Yes, sir. I tried optimizing the hashing algorithm to reduce the load," Firman answered truthfully.

Professor Bramantyo stood silent for a moment. He had observed Firman since his freshman year: a scholarship student who always occupied the front row, kept a low profile, and consistently submitted code written with remarkably clean, efficient architecture. While Professor Bram knew from the lab assistants that Firman worked part-time late into the night, he had not anticipated that the young man's technical grasp had already surpassed the standard curriculum for his year.

"Firman," Professor Bramantyo said, folding his arms as he leaned against the edge of the lab desk. "Next month, my company is launching an exclusive internship program for the national banking security overhaul project. There are only three openings for students nationwide. Are you interested?"

Firman’s heart thudded against his chest. An internship at PT Cyber Nusantara Utama was the ultimate target for technology students across the country—a badge of distinction on any resume.

"I would be deeply honored, sir. But... do I meet the requirements? I understood the selection process is extremely competitive and typically reserved for final-year students," Firman replied, keeping his expectations grounded.

Professor Bramantyo let out a quiet chuckle and gave Firman's shoulder a firm pat. "To me, qualifications are defined by capability, not a diploma. Starting tomorrow, move your desk into my office. You will serve as my personal research assistant and prepare for next month's internship. I will oversee your training myself."

Hearing the decisive offer from his mentor, Firman felt a sudden warmth behind his eyes. He bowed deeply to conceal his emotion. "Thank you, Professor. I promise I will not let you down."

From that day forward, Firman entered an intensive period of growth. Under Professor Bramantyo’s direct guidance, he was taught not only rapid code implementation, but also strategic thinking as a global system architect.

Professor Bram was a demanding, meticulous mentor. On numerous occasions, days of Firman's hard work faced sharp criticism for minor inefficiencies. Yet Firman never grew discouraged or resentful. The emotional rejection from his biological mother years ago had tempered his spirit into steel; he took professional feedback as fuel to refine his craft.

A month later, the internship program commenced. Firman was placed directly into the Core Security Division at PT Cyber Nusantara Utama. There, he worked alongside senior engineers and graduates from prestigious overseas universities, many of whom initially dismissed him as a third-year student intern.

Firman chose to let his work speak for itself.

The turning point arrived during the third week of the internship. While conducting a stress test on a new banking system prototype, the infrastructure faced a massive malware infiltration attack. Senior engineers scrambled to contain the breach, racing to prevent a data leak that could cost the nation billions of rupiahs.

Amid the chaos of the server room, Firman stood composed before his station. His fingers moved with rapid precision across the keyboard, his mind cutting through the panic around him. Applying the asynchronous logic framework Professor Bram had taught him, Firman drafted an emergency script to isolate the threat.

"Professor, the primary vulnerability lies in the layer-three authentication protocol. I've built a sandbox to trap the payload," Firman called out above the noise.

Every head in the room turned toward his desk. Professor Bramantyo stepped forward immediately. "Execute it now, Firman!"

Firman struck the Enter key with absolute resolve.

Within seconds, the attack metrics on the main display plummeted, diverted straight into the trap system Firman had deployed. The system indicator shifted back to a steady green: SECURE.

The tense room dissolved into collective sighs of relief and resounding applause. The senior engineers who had once overlooked Firman now stared at the nineteen-year-old with genuine awe and respect. They recognized that the intern before them possessed extraordinary talent.

Professor Bramantyo walked over, clapping Firman on the shoulder with a proud smile. "Exceptional work, Firman. You just saved the company's largest contract of the year."

Firman offered a subtle smile, shaking his mentor's hand firmly. Beneath the ambient glow of the server room displays, he caught his reflection in the glass monitor.

He was no longer the helpless child weeping after being cast out onto the street. Today, he was Firman Aditya—a rising young professional whose caliber was recognized at the highest levels of the industry. Through this opportunity and his mentor's guidance, the path toward financial independence and dignity lay open before him. It was only a matter of time before the rest of the world saw who he truly was.
