I Am Not My Mother’s Brother

24. A Redemption Transaction

The deep rumble of the loan shark’s departing vehicle gradually faded into the distance, leaving behind a thick, suffocating quiet over the porch of the small rental row unit. The signed debt clearance documents and the property deed now rested securely in Grandmother Sumarni's hands on Firman’s direct orders. To everyone who had witnessed it, what had just transpired was nothing short of an impossible financial miracle. Four hundred and fifty million rupiahs had vanished in the blink of an eye, transferring out from the mobile screen of a twenty-four-year-old man.

Rizka Amulia stood rooted to the spot. Tears streamed down her hollow cheeks, soaking her worn skin. The terrifying anxiety that had gripped her for months—the relentless terror that had robbed her of sleep night after night—evaporated instantly. That crushing weight had been lifted off her shoulders by the very flesh and blood she had once abandoned.

Looking over at her husband, Hendra, who stood gawk-mouthed and terrified in the corner of the porch, Rizka’s ego collapsed completely. She took a trembling step forward, a sudden surge of emotional relief and desperate longing choking the breath in her chest. In her eyes, Firman was no longer a shameful mistake to be erased; Firman was a savior, a devoted son who had returned to rescue his mother.

"Firman..." Rizka sobbed, her voice breaking. She reached out, her hands shaking as she tried to grasp the sleeve of Firman’s expensive charcoal suit jacket. "You... you came back, my child. You saved your mother... I knew it. In your heart, you still love me. You're so successful now, my boy... Forgive me... Forgive your mother's past mistakes..."

Rizka wept bitterly, covering her weathered face with her hands. "Seeing you come here today, paying off all my debts... I know you are a dutiful son. You came here because you missed your mother, didn't you, my child? You want us to be a family again?"

Hendra, seeing an opportunity, attempted to maneuver himself into the situation. He stepped forward with a forced, awkward grin. "That's right, young Firman... Your mother has always been thinking about you. Now that everything is cleared, we can all live together as a proper family again. If you happen to have a larger place—"

"Silence."

A single word cut from Firman's lips. His tone wasn't explosive, yet it was so cold, so sharp, and so heavy with authority that it froze the air on the porch. Hendra shut his mouth instantly, his bravado draining completely as he shrank back under Firman's gaze.

Firman slowly drew back the arm Rizka had reached for. He took a deliberate step backward, creating a clear, unbridgeable gulf between them. His dark, marble-cold eyes locked straight onto Rizka’s tear-stained face. There was no warmth in his gaze. No longing. Only a vast, hollow emptiness.

"Do not misunderstand, Woman," Firman said, his voice deep and authoritative, yet vibrating with an emotional weight he had carried buried in his chest for over a decade. "I did not come here today out of filial duty as your son. And I certainly did not come out of longing."

Rizka gasped, her sobs halting mid-breath. "Fi-Firman... what do you mean, my child? You just paid off all my debts..."

"The four hundred and fifty million rupiahs I transferred..." Firman paused, his chest heaving as he fought back the surging childhood memories crowding his throat, "...was not an act of devotion. It was a redemption fee. The final transaction to buy my complete freedom from the woman who birthed me."

Firman took another step forward, his gaze piercing directly into the core of Rizka’s soul. His voice began to tremble—emotional, raw, unleashing every drop of agony he had locked away in the dormitories of the orphanage.

"Have you forgotten, Rizka? Who was the one who cast me aside first?" Firman demanded, his eyes burning hot, though he refused to let a single tear fall before her. "Grandma was forced to take me to the orphanage because she was old, sickly, and impoverished! But why did she have to carry that burden alone? Because of you! You ran away, abandoning a helpless child with an aging grandmother just to chase after the man you loved!"

Rizka recoiled, her face turning completely drained of color.

"You viewed my existence as a stain that ruined your chances of marrying a wealthy man!" Firman declared, his voice rising an octave, echoing off the thin walls of the row house. "You called me a curse! You discarded your duty as a mother and dumped your innocent child onto a frail old woman, all so you could look clean and unburdened in the eyes of your new husband!"

"Firman... no, my child... I had no choice—"

"I received nothing from you!" Firman cut her off mercilessly. "All I remember from my childhood is the way you looked at me with pure disgust as you walked away for your own happiness. You forced me into the role of a brother, never a son. You never even treated me as a human being—only trash!"

Rizka sank to the concrete floor of the porch, weeping hysterically as her chest heaved with agonizing gasps. Every word from Firman’s lips was a blade shredding what remained of her dignity.

"Today, Providence shows its hand," Firman looked down at Rizka kneeling at his feet with complete detachment. "The child you discarded to pursue a man and a life of luxury now stands before you to pay the price for all your greed and the utter failure of your life with the man you chose. That fortune I transferred today is proof... proof that I have conquered the cruel fate you left behind for me."

Firman adjusted the lapel of his suit jacket, smooth and unruffled. His expression settled back into a face of stone.

"My transaction with you ends today. I have paid the blood debt for you bringing me into this world. From this second onward, we are total strangers. Do not ever dare seek information about me, do not ever dare knock on the door of my life, and do not ever expect me to acknowledge you as my mother."

Firman turned around, refusing to give another second to tears of regret that arrived more than a decade too late. He walked toward Grandmother Sumarni, gently supporting the frail woman as he guided her into the quiet sanctuary of his luxury sedan.

On the cluttered porch behind them, Rizka could only wail and strike her own chest in despair, watching her remarkably successful, honorable biological son leave her life forever—a devastating internal judgment she would carry for the rest of her days, having thrown away a diamond all for the sake of shame and deceit.
