Naura's Tears

2. Lake of Love

Lake Kenanga, according to Adam, is the lake of love. While others see the calm and clear waters of Lake Kenanga, Adam sees the beauty of his lover on the surface of the waters of Lake Love.

A person who is sick and only awakens because of love.

Again, Syarif doesn't understand what truly drives Adam to love so deeply. Ever since Adam met his lover, Naura. There was nothing wrong with their love; Adam had always loved Naura with a genuine love.

Unfortunately, life cannot continue without wealth. That is reality. Adam's love had to end, and Naura married another man, perhaps arranged by her parents. Naura didn't dare refuse on that day of separation. Syarif was a witness.

The day Adam lost his life marked the beginning of Adam's life, but he no longer possessed the desires of a normal human being. He was like a walking corpse, walking every Sunday, the rest of the day. Sleeping in his room and enduring his illness. That day was...

Sunday.

***

Sunday. As usual, Adam couldn't wait for this day. The day he always met the love of his life, Naura. Like the sun impatiently waiting to rise, like the moon impatiently waiting for night, or like a bat impatiently waiting for dusk to greet him. Adam's happiness soared every Sunday, because he would be able to gaze upon Naura's beautiful marble face again.

Adam wore his best clothes, riding an old jengki bicycle inherited from his late father. His name was Adam Zulqarnain, and he was now 23 years old. Throughout the journey, no matter the steep roads, Adam would always smile. Naura waited for him, right at Kenanga Lake, the place where they first met and where they spoke every Sunday.

They fell in love, an uncontrollable love, a love that left no memories, because they promised to pursue happiness together.

Oh, how beautiful.

Kenanga Lake was already in sight, and Adam saw a woman wearing a cream-colored hijab sitting on a bamboo chair under a guava tree. It was Adam who had planted the red guava tree and had also made the chair there. So that Naura would feel at home, so that Adam could linger and gaze at her marble face, bathed in sunlight peeking through the guava leaves.

There was no greater joy for Adam than Naura's beautiful smile, a smile that, when he saw it, made it seem as if the world and everything in it were bowing to her.

Adam continued to smile, his happiness overflowing. He leaned his jengki bicycle under a teak tree, 10 meters from the guava tree near the lake where Naura was gazing at the water.

The water's shimmering reflection seemed to sway in the sunlight, and Adam slowly walked toward Naura.

"Assalamu'alaikum Naura," Adam greeted gently from behind the guava tree. Naura's face was so beautiful, seen from the side, Adam was captivated once again, that marble face so beautiful, brighter than the sun, softer than the surface of the lake.

"Wa'alaikumsalam Adam, sit down." Naura's soft voice truly made Adam's heart tremble. It was as if his heart was about to leap, his entire body truly feeling a feeling that even a painter couldn't describe. Every day, Adam just wanted Sunday, when he could hear Naura's voice or see her infatuated face.

Adam walked slowly and sat on the edge of the bamboo lounger, two meters away from Naura. The two of them gazed at the clear waters of Lake Kenanga; every Sunday, that was what the two lovebirds did.

"Have you eaten, Adam?" Naura continued to stare straight at the lake water, not looking at Adam, who was wearing his black peci (traditional cap) that had already faded to a dull white. The peci was certainly worn out.

"It doesn't matter to me whether I eat or not, Naura... As long as I can see your beautiful smile and pure face, that's enough for me," Adam glanced back at Naura, a soft tingle enveloping his heart.

"You're always like that, Adam... You have to take care of your health," Naura sighed as if a burden was weighing on her. Naura loved Adam deeply; their hearts were connected, and they met every Sunday. Doing nothing, just chatting and gazing at the beautiful, clear lake, bathed in sunlight from the eastern horizon. Letting go of longing.

Silence ensued for a second, a minute, even thirty minutes. There was no sound except for the sounds of animals and the splashing of water created by Adam throwing stones he had picked up from under the bamboo chair he was sitting on.

"Adam..." Naura looked at Adam's face from the side. He was handsome, but like most village youths, tanned from working all day. He always wore a black peci (cap).

"Naura wants to say she misses you, right?" Adam picked up another stone and threw it onto the surface of the lake. The water created a rhythmic circle as it bounced, and the stone landed on the fourth reflection. Beautiful.

Adam continued to smile as he stared at the lake. Even though he couldn't see Naura's face, he felt like he was in heaven, close to his beloved. Adam only hoped that he would always be with her.

Only with her would he be happy; that was his belief.

Naura looked back at Adam's face, which continued to smile. He seemed to be getting restless, as if something was on his mind. Naura hesitated to speak, but she quickly gathered her courage and clenched her fists to strengthen her resolve to speak to him.

"Adam... Starting next Sunday, you don't have to wait for Naura anymore. Adam..." Naura's voice choked, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Adam was shocked, as if she couldn't believe what he had just heard. "W... What did you say, Naura? I... I don't understand?"

Tears welled up in Naura's eyes again. Naura tried to wipe them away and continued to be strong. She wanted the problem resolved quickly and had to be strong.

"Adam..." Naura's voice trembled.

Adam now looked at Naura, who was looking down, the cloth hijab around her chin wet with tears.

"Adam, a pious young man. Many women will accompany him in the future..." Naura's tears became increasingly uncontrollable.

Adam stood, his legs shaking violently; he was in complete disbelief. Naura had said something he had never imagined. What was wrong with today? What was wrong with this Sunday?

"No, Naura, no... no..., don't say anything else, Naura. Don't joke around on Sunday, Naura, a great day for us. No, Naura... don't cry, Naura," Adam shook his head repeatedly, his hands trembling as he reached out to Naura.

"No, Adam. Listen to me... don't wait until Sunday again. This is the last time, forget about Naura." Naura's face was still downcast.

Adam took two steps back, his trembling legs preventing him from holding himself up, like a thunderclap in broad daylight. Adam fell backward onto the green grass by Lake Kenanga.

"No, Naura..."
