Naura's Tears
22. Naura and Diandra
Diandra grew increasingly curious about Naura. For some reason, her soul was called to get to know her and see what Naura's life was like. Diandra had to find out what Naura was like. Based on Mr. Fandi's information, Diandra searched for Naura's house.
That morning, when Adam went to Danau Kenanga, Diandra scouted out Naura's house. As Fandi had told her, it was easy to find.
Diandra insisted she had to be strong, so she knocked on the door. The house was nice for its size, in a small town some distance from the village where Adam and Naura used to live.
Diandra rang the doorbell, one or three times with a few seconds' pause. Someone came out, a middle-aged woman wearing a dark blue hijab.
The woman was Fatma, who took care of Sandi and Naura's household needs. However, this time, Sandi was not at home; he was at the home of his young wife, who had already moved in. Firla didn't want to share a house with her old wife; she wanted her own special home. Sandi agreed.
Fatma saw a beautiful woman who looked like she came from the big city, dressed in a white dress and luxurious attire. "Who are you looking for, Miss?" Fatma asked as she opened the door wide.
"Is Naura here, Miss?"
Her voice was soft and polite. "Miss Naura is here. She was still in her room just now, helping with the housework. Who are you, Miss? I'll let you know if I want to meet you."
Naura smiled again. "Please call me, Miss. My name is Diandra. Just say I'm an old friend of Naura's."
Fatma nodded, trusting me. She told Diandra to come in first and sit on the living room sofa. Fatma asked permission to go to her Miss, Naura's room. Diandra was left alone, and she looked around the living room. She saw a wedding photo; it was definitely Naura and Sandi. Naura's face was beautifully revealed in her wedding dress.
It wasn't just her beautiful face, her innocent face, and her beautiful smile. However, Diandra saw something else in Naura's wedding photo. Perhaps it was true that Naura was forced to marry Sandi simply because of her family's debt, and she sacrificed her own happiness.
Naura seemed to be keeping her feelings to herself; something deep within her heart, Diandra saw, meant Naura was indeed forced to marry Sandi. Adam was a victim, and Naura was a victim too. However, Naura's fate was better, as she became Sandi's wife, still living a normal life in a luxurious home.
"Miss, who is this?" A soft voice startled Diandra, who was concentrating on the framed photos hanging on the living room wall.
Diandra smiled and greeted Naura, "I know you well, Miss Naura. Maybe you don't know who I am."
They sat side by side, slightly at an angle. Naura grew increasingly curious about this woman who claimed to know her so well. But what was even more surprising was the woman's striking appearance, her strikingly beautiful face, her captivating smile, and her captivating eyes.
"My name is Diandra. I'm from the capital city. I never thought I'd be in this small town, or even a small village, much less so. However, fate led me here."
Naura, her eyes shining, listened to Diandra's story. But before she could continue, Mrs. Santi arrived with two cups of tea and some snacks. Mrs. Santi placed the two cups on the table and invited Diandra to enjoy her tea. Diandra thanked her.
"Fate led me to meet Adam."
Like the slow ticking of a clock, like the boom of an explosion, and also like a strong gust of wind. Naura's heart was shocked to hear Adam's name from a woman as beautiful as Diandra. Her curiosity deepened: what was their relationship like? And has Adam recovered from his illness?
Diandra saw the surprise on Naura's face, but it was okay. What sparked Diandra's curiosity about Naura and how their past love could have reached such a depth made Diandra want to uncover the truth of their story. "Adam? Well... how is he doing now, Diandra? Has Adam recovered from his illness?" Unable to hold back her curiosity, the question just came out of Naura's lips.
Diandra smiled, "So you still have a heart, Naura? After all you've done to Adam, and you're still thinking about him, where have you been all this time?"
Naura was at a loss for an answer, her hands trembling uncontrollably. Where had she been all this time? Had she been too happy with her husband, Sandi, and forgotten about Adam? And when problems arose, and Sandi dumped her, she only began to think about Adam? What an irony.
"I'm sorry... I did..."
"You didn't do anything wrong with me, Naura," Diandra's gaze shifted from Naura, and she stared straight ahead, looking at Naura's wedding photos. "You left Adam, and you're the one who did him wrong. You should apologize to him. His love for you is so great, it's bigger than Lake Kenanga.
When you were having fun with your husband, he only looked at Lake Kenanga and imagined your face. He's gone mad with love for you, and you haven't given him an explanation or even looked at him."
"Enough, Diandra..., your love story has been erased. I decided to leave him and choose my own new life. Am I wrong if I decide on my own path in life? What if I don't love Adam anymore? Will I be happy if I continue to be with him?" There was a hoarseness in Naura's voice, and even her tears dripped slowly down her cheeks. However, Naura hurriedly wiped it so that Diandra couldn't see it.
Silence was created again between Naura and Diandra, who knew who else would start talking; both of them seemed to be waiting for each other.
"I used to be imprisoned in darkness and paralysis. That's right! I used to be blind and unable to walk. Until his parents asked me to come to Adam's village. Somehow, God's providence brought me to meet Adam, and miraculously, his tears of pain cured me of my blindness and deafness.
If it weren't for you, who caused Adam's pain, there would be no tears of pain and no healing for me to see again. I don't blame Naura for what happened to Adam. But it would be better if you came to his house and apologized to Adam. Maybe that would bring relief to everyone."
Diandra's words were true. After Naura learned what had happened to Adam, she stopped caring and focused more on her own life. After all, they used to share stories and memories, even sharing love every Sunday at Kenanga Lake, a witness to their love.
"Could you please convey my apologies to Adam? Let him no longer know Naura, and let him be happy without her."
Diandra exhaled sharply, "Huffff," then looked at Naura, "That just proves that Naura can't forget Adam. Naura's afraid that if she meets Adam, everything might change."
Naura's gaze immediately shifted to Diandra. Somehow, those words were true. Her love for Adam remained even though she was Sandi's wife, but even more so when Sandi began to dump her. Although Naura hadn't told her the story of her marriage, Diandra's words seemed to truly represent her soul.
However, a debt is still a debt. Her family's debt to Mr. Rodin, Sandi's father, is still a debt. How could that amount of money help her family?
Ah! Naura tried to dismiss the thought. Now that she was Sandi's wife, she would inevitably be loyal to him, and for Adam, it was just a memory of the past, nothing to be brought up or remembered again.
To cover up what was on her mind, Naura agreed to meet Adam and apologize for what had happened. "Okay, Ms. Diandra, I'll try to find a good time to meet Adam and apologize for what happened. Maybe that will help Adam calm down and ease my guilt, allowing me to face my life with peace."
Naura also expressed her gratitude for Diandra's visit. The news of Adam's health and recovery also made Naura feel better, as she had been troubled by the news that Adam was a patient and confined to his room.
"May I ask you something personal, Naura?" Diandra used her name to be familiar, and they were also the same age, although Diandra was probably a year younger.
"Go ahead, Diandra. If I can answer it, I will." Naura's graceful, curvy wink made Diandra realize that even though she was from the countryside, she had a beautiful face.
"You're married now, so do you still have love in your heart for Adam?"
Diandra's blunt question took Naura by surprise. For some reason, her lips went numb with the most profound question she didn't want to answer, or the question Naura had been avoiding the most. Why did it come from a stranger she had only just met?
"I'm sorry, Diandra. I can't answer this question. I'm afraid I'll answer incorrectly. I apologize once again."
Diandra understood now that the sudden question was being asked of someone they'd just met, and especially since it was a very deep and heartfelt matter. Asking a married person if they still loved an ex was taboo. However, Diandra could already guess from the look in Naura's eyes; somehow, Diandra could see how human eyes react to an answer. Perhaps this was also part of the gift for her eyes, which had been unable to see.
"It's okay, Ms. Naura. What's clear is that I love Adam too. I'm attracted to and love him not only because he's been a light to me, but I also feel comfortable around him. At first, I might have just felt sorry for his fate, but he's truly a noble person. If that's the case, then I'll pursue him, and if Adam is willing, we'll marry."
A smile echoed Diandra's statement, but for some reason, a sudden feeling of tightness arose in Naura's heart. But wasn't she already married and someone else's wife?
Why did that feeling suddenly appear, as if she couldn't bear Adam being loved by another woman? Hadn't she always ignored how Adam felt when she left him and chose Sandi?
Naura reassured herself, trying not to be weak, "Adam is very lucky; such a beautiful woman loves him. I hope you two will be happy if God brings you together in marriage."
"Okay, Naura, thank you for your time." It seemed like enough; Diandra felt that today was enough to find out Naura's attitude and how she felt about Adam now.
"Yes, you're welcome, Diandra."
Diandra said goodbye. She returned to Kenanga Lake, her destination. Despite much discussion, she now knew exactly how Naura felt and how she felt about Adam.
Naura's statements were stored in her expression. Forced to marry Sandi, she still hoped for Adam's happiness. Naura was a good woman in an imprisoned body, and her soul was restrained, yearning for freedom.
There comes a time when everything has an ending. And humans simply await that ending with effort and prayer. Diandra smiled and left Naura's house.
