Naura's Tears

5. His Painful Soul

Adam's love life is truly tragic. Naura left him some time ago and has never heard from him. Syarif, who understands Adam, cannot fathom that a woman would abandon her lover simply for money or other reasons.

Reality is not as beautiful as the dreams we hope for. Reality can be bittersweet, but the reality that often befalls humans is the bitter truth. This is because humans must understand that the world they live in is never eternal, so they must live with the reality they must accept. They must be strong.

Since the day Adam and Naura separated, Syarif has always been by Adam's side on Sundays. Every Sunday, Syarif would accompany Adam to Lake Kenanga. While waiting for Adam's now miserable figure, Syarif always tried to advise Adam and ask him to get up. It's unclear whether Adam heard him or not.

Syarif didn't care.

Adam suffered pain from Monday to Saturday, crying in his room. So, Sundays were a balm for his pain and the only day Adam could smile so beautifully. Even if it was a fantasy, Adam was smiling at Naura. Others saw that Adam was sick. Yes, sick because of love.

Truly a love too deep, when others were sick because of wounds or physical injuries. Adam was wounded mentally, devoid of the will to live, and his life was only for love.

That was Adam; it had been a month since Naura's wedding. It had been four Sundays, and every Sunday Adam sat alone, gazing at the lake. Kenanga Lake, the place of Adam and Naura's memories. Adam spent all day staring at the water, and there he saw Naura's smiling face.

Halimah couldn't bear it; she followed Adam and waited for her son at the lake. However, Syarif couldn't bear it, and he waited for Halimah, whom he considered his own mother. Syarif waited for him.

Every Sunday, Adam's face looked cheerful, even though his body was now thin, as if he had lost all his fat. Every day, he lay there lamenting his fate. Every Sunday, he came to Kenanga Lake, just sitting and smiling dreamily. Syarif shook his head. How much love could make something like this happen?

Sighing, Syarif said, "Adam, wake up. At least have some pity on your mother. There's no need for you to drag this out. Naura isn't for you, my friend."

Adam stopped smiling abruptly, "No, Syarif... Naura was made for me." After that, Adam smiled again, staring at the water in the lake.

Syarif looked at his friend. Perhaps the poet was right. Love can drive people crazy. When midday came, Adam performed ablutions by the lakeside and prayed there. Adam never missed his prayers, but afterward, he would return to his daydreams.

As evening approached, Adam began to head home. Syarif followed him. Now, the whole village knew Adam as a man madly in love. Yes, even the little children Adam and Syarif passed kept saying, "Crazy in love." Adam didn't care about anything around him.

News of Adam's ill health spread throughout the village. Naura heard it, her heart brimming with pity. Yesterday, Syarif came to his father's house when he returned from a visit to the village with her husband, Sandi. Syarif begged Naura to at least come and advise Adam to come to his senses. Sandi, who was wearing a shirt, heard this, and Naura hesitated to ask her husband's permission. However, he understood and allowed her, but she had to come too.

Sandi had heard that someone was infatuated with his wife to the point of illness. Sandi wanted to see what the man was like, as he reportedly used to be her lover.

Sandi parked their car in Halimah's yard. Syarif had arrived earlier on his motorcycle. The house looked dilapidated, made of planks. Sandi looked around for a moment; the wood was heavily eaten by termites. Sandi couldn't imagine how poor the family was.

Halimah welcomed Naura and Sandi and invited them inside. The living room was small, and the chairs looked old wood.

"Mom..." Naura felt guilty.

Halimah tried to be strong, "It's okay, Naura... everyone has their own destiny. Heaven and earth will never meet, but they will face each other." Halimah smiled bitterly.

"May I meet Adam?" Naura asked softly.

"Yes, son... I hope it can be a healing for Adam." Halimah's tears couldn't be held back; they slowly fell, and she quickly wiped them away.

Naura moved, followed by Sandi and Syarif behind her. Halimah just sat on a chair. The living room and Adam's room were next to each other. Naura entered and saw Adam lying on his side, motionless.

There were two wooden chairs near where Adam lay; perhaps someone had come to visit him. Naura slowly sat down on the wooden chairs. Sandi refused to sit, standing with Syarif. The chairs might break if he sat on them, as they looked old, he thought.

"Adam..." Naura's voice was soft, choked.

There was no response. Naura stared at Adam's back, the man who had once filled her heart. They were silent for a while; only Sandi looked restless and uncomfortable.

"Come to your senses, Adam... and forgive me, I'm Naura."

Still silent.

"Honey, let's go home. We've come to visit him." Sandi was starting to feel uncomfortable in the room. It was stuffy.

Naura didn't dare refuse her husband, and she slowly got up.

"Adam..." Adam's voice trembled as Naura began to walk out.

Adam continued, his voice hoarse, "Forever, Naura is only for Adam."

Naura shed tears; she knew Adam so well now. Losing those beautiful days with Adam was the most painful for her. But fate had other plans.

"Let's go home, honey!" Sandi understood the situation and pulled his wife's arm. Naura couldn't argue. They left Adam, who continued to shed tears. It was as if the sky had fallen on him. His grief reached its peak, but his body couldn't move at all.

Sandi and Naura left without saying goodbye. Halimah watched them leave with tears streaming down her face. Syarif was helpless. Allah is the judge of all things.

In that room, the tears could no longer be held back. Adam felt helpless; his tears continued to fall nonstop. His eyes were bruised; perhaps they had run out. The helplessness and destruction of his life were complete.

Adam wanted to rise, but helplessness filled his soul. His sadness had consumed him. He was at a loss for what to do, bewildered by the destruction of his hopes and love.

Naura left Adam. On the way, her tears wouldn't stop flowing. She wiped them away with tissues until she had used up countless sheets.

"Remember, Naura, don't love anyone but me, your husband!" Sandi said rather loudly, snapping Naura out of it. Adam's life might have been ruined, but Naura's was also ruined. To save her family, she had to become a sacrifice and marry someone she didn't love.
