Naura's Tears
7. Tears of Love?
Something he sometimes doesn't think about and wants to forget, but sometimes it just comes out without him even thinking about it. Mr. Karta's desire to get well, along with his doubts about the healing power of tears, still lingers in his mind.
Mr. Karta doesn't care and continues to try to forget his strange dream about meeting the old man and Adam's healing tears. Although the strange thoughts still occasionally cross his mind, he now considers them merely a dream, perhaps a figment of his imagination, driven by his desire to be healed.
The next incident makes him even more doubtful. Yes, it's true! His dream was about the old man telling him that if he wanted to be healed, Mr. Karta could take Adam's tears and wipe them on his paralyzed legs. The dream came again, even though Mr. Karta had prayed to God to grant him another dream.
This time, the dream felt real to Mr. Karta. The old man even seemed to be forcing Mr. Karta to come to Adam and ask for some of his tears. They would enable him to walk and be a cure for the illness he had suffered for over three years.
Mr. Karta had been having this strange dream for three nights in a row. He began to believe it was a sign from God. He couldn't believe it was just a dream anymore, and he searched for his son, who was still at home and hadn't left yet.
Mr. Karta asked his son to take him immediately. His son was confused, as his father was unusually insistent on leaving and had to leave immediately. Heri was Mr. Karta's son, but Heri didn't know what his father was up to.
Heri asked for a moment to have breakfast, then he would take his father. Mr. Karta waited for his son to finish breakfast. Heri hurried to finish his meal, seeing his father's unusually anxious appearance.
After breakfast, Heri got out of his motorcycle and asked, "Where are you going, sir? It looks like there's going to be a big problem!" Heri remained curious, feeling like a disaster was about to happen, which was why his father was insisting on taking him somewhere.
"To Adam's place, Mrs. Halimah's son," Mr. Karta replied.
Heri didn't want to ask any more questions and asked his father to get on the motorcycle and help him hold his father's cane. He started the engine and sped off.
He thought for a moment. Eh! Didn't your father say he was going to Mrs. Halimah or Adam's place? A man whom everyone in the village called crazy. Why did he ask to be taken there? Oh, I don't know!
Heri ignored it and sped off to Adam's house, cutting through the morning light and carrying his father as he helped him onto the bike. Hero also held his cane in front of him while still steering the motorcycle.
Halimah's small house was now quiet, Adam's voice no longer audible as it usually was during his Quranic recitation. For a year, Adam had been like a prisoner, even having to be fed by Halimah.
Adam's tears fell without the frail young man realizing it.
"Assalamu'alaikum," a voice startled Halimah, who was feeding her son. She hurriedly returned the greeting and left. Why were there suddenly visitors? Who were they? It was unusual; usually, Syarif would come to greet him and go straight into the house.
Mrs. Halimah saw her visitor. It was Mr. Karta, carrying a cane in his right hand, pressing down on him and making it easier for him to walk.
"What's wrong, Mr. Karta? That's unusual?" Halimah was surprised. "Oh yes, please come in and have a seat." Halimah invited Mr. Karta and his son to sit first. They sat down, and there was a moment of silence. Only then did Mr. Karta begin his somewhat labored conversation.
"I..." Mr. Karta fidgeted with his cane as he sat restlessly, hesitating to say, "I..."
"What's going on?" a voice suddenly came from outside. It was Syarif's voice. Syarif was surprised; it was unusual for guests to come to his friend's house. Syarif looked at the visitor, "Mr. Karta, what's wrong?" Syarif quickly sat down next to Mrs. Halimah.
"So... it's like this," Mr. Karta began, "I had the same dream three times. In that dream, I was told to go to Adam's house. I had to rub Adam's tears on my paralyzed leg to heal it."
Mr. Karta's son, Heri, was shocked and didn't know anything. He was only asked to immediately take his father to Adam and Mrs. Fatimah's house. Only then did he realize his father had had such a strange dream.
The three people listening to Mr. Karta's explanation were stunned by his explanation. It didn't make sense, did it? Syarif stared at Mrs. Halimah's face, his eyes at a loss for words. In fact, Adam always gazed at Lake Kenanga every Sunday and was said by many to be mad with love.
"But Mr. Karta, my son..." Mrs. Halimah pressed her lips together slowly, a frown appearing on her face, "My son is not a shaman or a guardian... He's just my poor son."
Mr. Karta paused for a moment. "Um... I don't know either, Ma'am, but in the dream, it seemed so real. An old man even asked me three times. May I have his tears, even just a drop?"
Tears? Mrs. Halimah continued to feed her son. Indeed, her tears never stopped flowing, so much so that occasionally, she had to wipe them away. Adam's face was already very thin and haggard. He ate little, and even drank, Halimah had to spoon-feed him.
Halimah looked at Syarif, her eyes questioning her son's best friend. Syarif's eyes blinked, and he nodded slowly, signaling for his mother to make the decision. Whatever your decision, Mom, I will always support you. You're the best!
"Okay, Mr. Karta, wait a moment," Mrs. Halimah went to her small kitchen. The living room was adjacent to all the bedrooms, the small house and the wooden hut were truly simple. Mrs. Halimah returned to the living room, carrying a spoon and a small bottle cap container, and went straight to Adam's room for a moment.
"Naura... Adam is only for you..." Adam's voice was soft. Halimah's eyes welled up with tears every time she saw her son's condition. Halimah asked her son's permission to wipe Adam's tears. She held the spoon to Adam's right cheek, just below his eye, and Adam's tears flowed into the spoon. One drop in his right eye and one drop in his left eye. Adam slept on his right side.
Two drops, enough. Mrs. Halimah put a little of the water into the cap of the plastic bottle, just a little. Mrs. Halimah did this only because she couldn't bear to see Mr. Karta begging.
Halimah left Adam's room and sat in the living room again, carrying the spoon containing Adam's tears.
"Is this enough, Mr. Karta?" She held the spoon out to Mr. Karta.
Mr. Karta accepted it without hesitation. Unexpectedly, Mr. Karta held the spoon in his left hand, and with his right hand grabbed all the water, even a little, and immediately smeared it on his right leg. He continued to do so over and over, until there was none left. Karta continued to apply it from the tip of his foot to his thigh. As impatient as a baby to walk, was there any immediate change in Mr. Karta?
For a few moments, nothing changed. Karta tried to get up, but still couldn't move his legs. As if disappointed, he was confused by all his dreams. Karta excused himself, his face disappointed. Mr. Karta asked his son, Heri, to help him walk again so he could hurry. His face was embarrassed, and they headed for the motorbike, and they went home.
Halimah watched Mr. Karta and his son leave until the motorbike roared out of sight. What's going on, O God? She wondered. How could such a strange event befall her son while he was still feeling his grief?
Don't let it be said in the future that my son is a shaman, my son is Adam. He was a child who was very close to Allah SWT for as long as Halimah knew him.
Mrs. Halimah said Istighfar and returned to her house.
