Shadow World: The Ash Heritage
1. The Vanishing World
Surya had always believed his life would be ordinary.
His mornings were filled with the same routine, his afternoons consumed by a part-time job, and his nights reserved for rest before repeating it all over again the next day. No adventures, no miracles, and certainly no grand destiny waiting for him.
That was how it was supposed to be.
The evening sun was beginning to sink behind the row of buildings as Surya stepped out of the convenience store where he worked part-time. The light blue uniform he wore felt slightly rumpled after standing behind the register for eight hours. He let out a long breath and stretched his shoulders.
"Man, I'm exhausted..."
The city streets were still bustling. A line of vehicles filled the red light, street vendors began setting up their carts, and the rich aromas of skewered meat and fried snacks blended into the evening air. Children ran along the sidewalk, young couples walked by laughing, and the call to the Maghrib prayer echoed from various directions.
Everything felt so normal.
Surya slid both hands into the pockets of his thin jacket. He had lived alone in a small rented house ever since his parents passed away a few years ago due to an accident. Ever since then, he had learned to face life without depending on anyone.
Even though he lived paycheck to paycheck, Surya never complained.
To him, as long as he could eat and sleep in peace, that was enough.
However, that night... Destiny had other plans.
Around eight o'clock at night. Surya had just finished showering and was sitting by the window, enjoying a cup of instant coffee. A light drizzle was starting to fall, wetting the asphalt that reflected the city lights.
He picked up his phone, scrolled through social media for a moment, and sighed with boredom.
"Just like every other day..."
Before he could even set his phone down, a sudden, searing heat bloomed across the palm of his left hand.
"Hm?" Surya winced.
The burning sensation intensified, as if a live coal were glowing right beneath his skin.
"What is this?" He quickly set his coffee cup down and opened his hand.
His eyes widened instantly. Right in the center of his palm, a black symbol had appeared.
Fine, pitch-dark lines slowly formed an intricate circle, filled with interlocking patterns like ancient carvings. The symbol seemed alive. A dim black light pulsed slowly to the rhythm of his heartbeat.
Surya rubbed it. It didn't vanish. He tried washing it under the tap. It stayed right there.
"It’s not ink..."
The longer he looked, the clearer the symbol became. While he was still trying to make sense of what was happening...
Crash! Every light in the house suddenly went out.
"A blackout?" It wasn't just his house. When Surya looked out the window, the entire city had plunged into darkness.
Streetlights. Building lights. Vehicle headlights. Everything died all at once.
An eerie silence enveloped the city. A few seconds later... Cries of alarm began to rise from every direction.
"What's happening?!" "The power's completely out!" "My phone has no signal!"
Surya tried turning on his phone screen. Pitch black. Completely dead. Even though its battery had been full just moments ago.
His heart began to beat faster. A creeping sense of unease crawled through his entire body. And then... He looked up at the sky.
And his breath caught in his throat. The night sky had vanished. There was no moon. No stars. No clouds.
All that could be seen was a vast expanse of pure black, moving slowly like a giant, churning ocean suspended above the heads of all mankind.
That shadow... It was alive. The black waves swirled to form a colossal vortex. Growing larger by the second. Drawing closer.
"What..." People's voices dissolved into screams of terror. Some dropped to their knees in prayer. Others ran aimlessly. Vehicles collided with one another. Car alarms wailed in a chaotic chorus. Yet all those sounds were slowly drowned out by a low, droning hum emanating from the sky.
Boom... The sound echoed like a thousand bells struck all at once.
The symbol on Surya’s palm burned hot again. The black mark now radiated a much brighter light. Everyone on the street suddenly stopped moving. They stared down at the palms of their own hands. Some bore the exact same symbol. Others did not.
"Do... do you see it too?!" someone screamed.
Before anyone could reply, the black vortex in the sky tore open. A long fracture split the heavens. From within it poured a gray light so blinding that the entire city seemed frozen in place.
And then... Everything vanished. No explosion. No wind. No sound. Just an instant. And the world changed.
Surya opened his eyes slowly. His head felt heavy. His body felt as though he had just fallen from a great height. He groaned softly as he pushed himself up.
"Where..." His sentence trailed off. This place was no longer his rented room. Nor was it his city.
He stood in the middle of an unfamiliar forest. Towering trees rose with ash-colored bark. There were no green leaves. All that fluttered down were fine flakes of ash, drifting slowly from the sky to blanket the ground like gray snow.
The air felt cold. Unforgivingly cold.
Surya looked around in every direction. Silent. No sound of traffic. No birds. No insects. Only the sigh of the wind carrying drifting ash.
"Is this... a dream?" He pinched his arm. It hurt. It was entirely real.
A few meters ahead of him, a man in a business suit sat slumped on the ground, his face pale. "Wh-where are we?"
Not far away, a woman clutched a small child as she wept. Several other people began to stir, one by one. All of them wore the same expression of confusion and terror.
"This isn't the city..." "I was just at home..." "Were we kidnapped?"
A young man bolted toward the trees. "Hello! Is anyone there?" No answer. There was only the echo of his own voice vanishing behind the veil of ash.
Surya looked down. The black symbol on his palm was still there. Its light was far brighter now. For some reason, the longer he stared at the mark, the stranger the sensation growing deep within his chest.
As if the symbol... Was waiting for something.
Suddenly... The wind stopped. The falling ash froze mid-air. The entire forest fell still. A silence so absolute that the sound of his own breathing echoed loudly.
And then... A voice reverberated from every direction. It was not a human voice. Neither heavy nor high. Yet it felt unimaginably ancient, as though it had existed since the world was first forged.
The voice spoke calmly. "Welcome..."
Everyone stiffened. Surya felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. The voice returned, clearer this time. "Welcome to..."
A brief pause. Then the final sentence echoed across the entire forest.
"The Shadow World."
And right after that voice faded away... From behind the trees, a pair of red eyes slowly blinked open.
