Shadow World: The Ash Heritage
17. The Secret of the Shadow World
Darkness.
That was the first thing Surya felt. No pain. No terror. Only absolute emptiness.
His body felt as though it were floating in an endless void. There was no ground to anchor him, no sky to gaze upon. Even the roaring din of the heirs’ war that had just shaken the Ash Valley had vanished, as though the entire world had ground to a sudden halt.
Surya opened his eyes slowly.
Yet what met his gaze froze his mind solid.
Before him wasn't an empty void.
It was a city.
A ruined city. Colossal skyscrapers stood in various states of structural collapse. The streets were choked with thick brush and aggressive vines clawing through the concrete. Ancient, unfamiliar machinery lay scattered across the asphalt like the bleached bones of mechanical beasts.
Yet there was a singular, terrifying detail that made Surya’s heart hammer against his ribs.
He recognized this place. Not because he had ever visited it. But because it felt like home.
"Earth..." he whispered, the word slipping past his lips on sheer instinct.
In the distance, a massive, fractured tower pierced straight through the bruised, churning clouds above. Stamped across its wreckage was an emblem that made his blood run cold.
The exact same symbol that always manifested on the Ash Relic.
Surya swept his gaze across the desolate horizon, his face twisted in disbelief. "This isn't the Shadow World..." he muttered. "This is—"
A voice materialized behind him. "Yes."
Surya whipped around instantly.
A figure stood a few paces away: an old man whose frame was semi-transparent, draped in clothing that appeared to belong to a hyper-advanced era. His eyes held an ancient, bottomless sorrow.
"You finally see the truth."
Surya raised his hands, instincts flaring. "Who are you?"
The old man ignored the hostility, staring instead at the ruined metropolis sprawling behind them.
"This place has worn many names," the old man said softly. "The Shadow World. The Realm of Death. The Trial Grounds. But its true name..."
He fixed his gaze on Surya. "...is Earth."
Surya fell silent. Impossible.
His immediate impulse was total denial. The Shadow World had always been understood as a separate dimension—the cradle of monsters, legacies, and primordial powers. How could this wasteland possibly be Earth?
"You're lying," Surya spat, his voice cold. "The Earth I knew nothing like this."
The old man offered a melancholy smile. "Because you knew Earth before the fall."
He raised a hand. Instantly, the landscape around them shimmered and shifted.
The ruined city began to reverse its decay. Skyscrapers righted themselves, towering high into the heavens. Sunlight washed over the firmament. People walked bustling streets, dressed in attire of a society far more advanced than anything Surya had ever witnessed. Colossal vessels drifted silently through the upper atmosphere. Machines capable of harnessing stellar energy hummed quietly across the grid. Civilization had peaked.
"This was the future," the old man's voice echoed. "An era when humanity believed they had conquered existence itself."
Yet the illusion shattered before his eyes.
The sky cracked wide open. The stars vanished. Something monstrous and unfathomable bled into reality. The laws of physics mutated overnight. Gravity dissolved into chaos. Time fractured into broken shards. Space lost its boundaries. And humanity, unable to adapt, began to vanish into nothingness.
"The world wasn't destroyed by war," the old man said softly. "The world was destroyed because reality itself was rewritten."
Surya watched as phantom humans fought a losing battle against forces beyond comprehension. Feral anomalies poured through dimensional tears. Alien radiation mutated living flesh. Some mortals gained terrifying powers; others degraded into mindless abominations.
"The Shadow World isn't another dimension," the old man declared. "It is Earth, long after it crawled through the apocalypse."
Surya clenched his fists. "So all of this... All the monsters. All the Legacies. All the heirs..."
The old man nodded slowly. "Parts of the adaptation."
"Adaptation?"
"The remnants of humanity engineered a system to ensure life could endure."
"A system?" Surya narrowed his eyes.
"The Legacies. The Relics. The Shadow World. They were all forged as a final, desperate defense mechanism."
Yet the old man's expression darkened into a deep shadow. "Or at least... that is what they believed."
The ground beneath Surya's boots trembled. A new sequence of memories projected across the void.
He watched thousands of mortals enter the Shadow World. They arrived as survivors. They fought. They built empires. They forged bloodlines. They became heirs.
Yet after a thousand years... everything collapsed again.
Then a fresh wave of humans arrived. The same cycle repeated.
Surya witnessed a horrifying truth. The rival heirs he had fought against... were not the first generation. They were merely links in an endless, agonizing chain. Thousands. Millions. Perhaps even more.
Every single soul who had ever laid claim to a Legacy... had played the exact same predetermined role. They were born. They fought. They amassed power. They perished. And the wheel spun anew.
"Impossible..." Surya whispered.
The old man looked at him with pity. "How many worlds have you watched burn? How many kingdoms have turned to ash? How many heroes walked this path, truly believing they were the first?"
Surya fell entirely silent. Because the answer lay spread out before his eyes.
There was nothing new. Nothing unique. Even he... was likely nothing more than a recycled echo of someone who had walked this exact path eons ago.
"Then..." Surya locked his gaze onto the old man. "Who created all of this?"
For the first time, a flicker of genuine terror crossed the old man's features. Not fear of Surya. But dread of something infinitely larger.
"Someone who was never meant to wake up."
The atmosphere warped. The entire Shadow World shuddered. Deep beneath the skeletal remains of the ruined city, something shifted. Something that had slumbered for millennia.
Mountains crumbled. The sky plunged into absolute blackness. And every single Legacy emblem across the globe ignited simultaneously.
The rival heirs locked in combat miles away froze instantly, all dropping their weapons as they felt the same crushing presence—an entity so absolute it made even the Ash King look like a child playing with fire.
The old man lowered his head. "He is the beginning of everything."
"The creator of the cycle."
Surya stared into the expanding abyss boiling in the distance. "He created the Shadow World?"
The old man's voice shook violently. "No."
"He created the suffering that made the Shadow World necessary."
From the heart of the darkness, a colossal eye blinked open—a solitary orb observing the entirety of reality.
And then, a voice resounded. A voice that didn't originate from a single point, but echoed from the fabric of space itself:
"How long..."
"...have I slept?"
The entire world locked in stasis.
"How many generations have foolishly tried to shatter my design?"
Surya stood motionless. For the first time since setting foot in the Shadow World... he felt a chill that made even the Ash King feel insignificant.
The creator had awakened.
And as those titanic eyes opened fully, the entire cycle took its final, irreversible step toward the end.
