Shadows Behind the Lens
11. The Third Roll, The Featureless Face
Arya's breath hitched in his throat, blocked by an icy draft that pierced deep down to his bone marrow. The reek of rotting flesh mingled with the stinging reek of chemical solutions hung thick just behind his back. His heart hammered wildly, slamming against his ribcage as though desperate to break free and escape.
Yet amidst the grip of absolute terror that paralyzed his common sense, the red safelight bulb on the ceiling abruptly stopped flickering. A steady, blood-red glow shone stable once more, filling every corner of the cramped, suffocating underground laboratory.
BUZZZT... The electrical hum that had been raging from behind the walls slowly subsided into a soft hiss.
The heavy atmosphere behind Arya's back suddenly evaporated, leaving behind a hollow vacuum of air. With the last remnants of his drained strength and a body shaking violently, Arya raised his head slowly, turning back in a stiff motion.
No one was there. The room was empty. Only his own shadow stretched long against the damp concrete wall.
Arya collapsed limply to the floor, dragging as much oxygen as he could into his burning lungs. Tears mixed with cold sweat poured heavily down his pale face. He sobbed softly, clutching his head tightly in his hands.
Why didn't I run? Why am I still here? his mind screamed hysterically, cursing his own stupidity. His subconscious mind instantly spiraled into a torturous internal debate: Stop, Arya! Enough! Don't touch that film roll again! Just smash the tin box, burn it all, and leave the door shut! You'll die if you keep going!
Yet on the other side of his crumbling sanity, a dark impulse whispered absolute certainty: If you stop now, that creature won't let you go. It has already marked you. You have to know the bitter end before it comes for you.
With hands shaking severely and breathing still ragged, Arya crawled across the cold concrete floor. His palm accidentally clipped the sharp corner of the workbench table, slicing open the skin on his finger and drawing fresh blood. Yet he ignored the stinging pain in his finger entirely.
He lifted his head, his eyes locking instantly onto the antique biscuit tin still sitting open on the table. Dozens of vintage film rolls remained inside, waiting to be unearthed.
Disregarding the screams of terror inside his own head, Arya's bleeding fingers reached inside, felt around the box, and pulled out the third film roll—a canister bearing a handwritten label marked with the year 1992.
"All right... let's see your true face," Arya whispered shakily, his voice raspy and barely audible, echoing hollowly against the darkroom walls.
He immediately plunged into action with forced, mechanical movements. Ignoring his pain and panic, Arya developed the 1992 roll in the chemicals with hurried efficiency. His hands agitated the processing tank roughly, then he grabbed a pristine white photographic sheet and plunged it into the developer tray.
Beneath the steady red glow, the chemical reaction began to work. The contour lines of the 1992 studio living room slowly emerged. The family in the photo looked older; the child had now grown into a teenager, standing between both parents who smiled stiffly.
Yet the moment Arya lifted the print and brought it close to his face, a choked shriek tore from his lips. He staggered backward until his spine slammed against the rack of chemical bottles.
The resulting print of that third roll revealed a scene far, far more horrifying than anything before.
That tall shadow in the tattered suit no longer stood embracing from behind or hiding behind window drapes. The entity now stood dead center among that 1992 family, wrapping its arms tightly around both parents on its left and right with elongated, tightly bound limbs.
And what made Arya's blood freeze solid instantly was the creature's face.
While on previous rolls the entity's face had been a flat, featureless black surface, this time that face began to display horrifyingly clear and sickening details. Its skin was dead pale like a drowned corpse, featuring deeply sunken, hollow eye sockets devoid of any eyeballs—housing only an absolute darkness that radiated pure hatred.
Even more terrifyingly, the position of the creature's head in the photo did not face the family members. That merciless face was turned a full one hundred and eighty degrees to the side, facing straight toward the camera lens—gazing with sharp, direct hostility, as though locking eyes directly with Arya at that very second.
"No... no, please don't..." Arya whimpered hysterically, dropping the photograph onto the table. His breath burned with the sharp stench of chemicals and the metallic reek of blood oozing from his scratched finger. His mind screamed in terror, realizing that the creature was no longer merely a foreign shadow, but an entity fully aware of his existence in the present.
With trembling hands, Arya gripped the table, intending to toss the cursed photo far out of his sight. Yet as his fingers accidentally flipped the 1992 print over to its reverse side...
His eyes widened in horror. Inscribed on the plain white back of the photographic paper was a crude scrawl gouged out with a dirty claw using thick black ink, forming a threatening sentence that shattered the remnants of his sanity:
"It can see you through that lens."
