Shadows Behind the Lens
23. The Final Roll
That completely empty final frame on the negative strip seemed to gaze right back at Arya with thousands of invisible eyes, demanding to be filled with the conclusion of his existence. The still-warm negative strip slipped from his limp fingers, dropping with a soft rattle onto the cold concrete floor.
Arya sat in absolute silence before the workbench. His once-frantic sobs gradually subsided, drying up alongside the tears completely spent from his eyelids. The remnants of fear, panic, and anger that had recently shattered his soul abruptly vanished, replaced by a hollow tranquility—a cold calm creeping from his toes up to the crown of his head, freezing every nerve of pain.
He had crossed the threshold where fear still held meaning. When terror became the breath inhaled every second, fear transformed into absolute resignation.
"It's time..." Arya whispered faintly. His voice sounded remarkably calm, hollow, and flat, echoing thinly inside the underground laboratory illuminated by the red safelight. No more tremors. No more resistance. He knew precisely that his entire struggle since the first night he stepped foot in this studio was merely part of a grand script carefully orchestrated by the lens of death.
Suddenly, amid the absolute silence of the darkroom, the air above the surface of the clean wash table trembled violently.
Swish...
A small spatial distortion materialized in the empty air, radiating a dim, silvery glow. Arya raised his head slowly, staring straight toward the wash table without a single trace of shock in his eyes.
Upon the dust-free wash table, a small object materialized out of nothingness. A final film roll bearing a special serial number, dated today—September 27, 2026—was casually placed down by a pair of unseen hands. The film roll hovered a few centimeters in mid-air, spinning slowly under simulated gravity before finally landing softly upon the wooden tabletop with a sharp, crisp tap.
Tap.
It was the closing film roll. The ultimate reel containing the final destiny for his existence in the real world.
The sacred moment of handing over that destiny unfolded in a majestic, gripping hush. Arya stared at the closing film roll with a gaze both vacant and piercing. All tremors vanished from his fingers as he slowly pushed himself up from the concrete floor, straightened his dust- and blood-stained green jacket, and stepped closer to the wash table.
A final decision had solidified within his mind. He would run no longer. He would not attempt to batter down that faux-steel door. He would respond to this final roll with full awareness, welcoming the destiny specifically prepared for him.
"Grandfather... I'll be joining you shortly," Arya said softly, as though speaking to the shadow of his grandfather who had once been trapped in this very same place.
With movements remarkably calm, measured, and entirely devoid of hesitation, Arya reached out his hand to pick up the closing film roll from the wooden table.
His fingertips brushed directly against the metallic canister, which felt freezing cold. Yet before he lifted it to load into the developing tank, his eyes caught a tiny strip of white paper label neatly wrapped around the body of the film roll.
Inscribed upon that paper label was a sentence written in deep black ink—handwriting he knew intimately, the exact handwriting of the late Grandfather Haris identical to the journals of the past.
The sentence stood out with absolute clarity, sharp beneath the red glare of the safelight:
"Final Roll: Subject No. 7, Arya Pratama."
