Shadows Behind the Lens

24. The Final Printing Process

The handwritten sentence of the late Grandfather Haris on the closing film roll's label—"Final Roll: Subject No. 7, Arya Pratama"—stood out with absolute clarity, staring directly at him beneath the red glare of the safelight. No remaining shock lingered within Arya's soul. No frantic heartbeat pounded against his ribs, nor did cold sweat trickle down his temples. There remained only a cold, hollow, and utterly tranquil absolute acceptance. He was no longer a terrified victim; he was part of the concluding chapter of an eternity catalog designed decades ago.

"Subject number seven... yes, a fitting number for an ending," Arya whispered softly. His voice sounded profoundly calm, flat, and peaceful, floating thinly within the dead-silent underground laboratory.

With hands remarkably calm—far, far calmer than when he first set foot across the threshold of this old photo studio a few days ago, back when he was still filled with naive dreams of a fresh page in life—Arya lifted the closing film roll from the wooden table. His fingers, which had previously been scraped and bloodied, now felt numb, no longer sensing pain or stinging aches, as though his human flesh had long since shed away, leaving behind the essence of a soul ready to be melted into celluloid.

He stepped toward the wash table in the corner of the room with steady strides. No more rushing. No more heartbreaking sobs.

Arya unsealed the film roll canister with a highly trained, precise motion, pulling out the final negative strip containing his ultimate destiny, and carefully loading it into the stainless steel developing tank.

He turned to the lineup of old chemical bottles. With full awareness, he mixed the final chemical solutions—measuring out the developer, stop bath, and fixer in exact proportions into the plastic trays before him. The pungent reek of acid and the sharp stench of sulfur that had previously suffocated his chest now felt intimately familiar, like the aroma of a final home welcoming his return.

"Let's finish this," Arya addressed the empty space surrounding him.

He agitated the film-processing tank with a slow, constant rhythm, counting every second inside his head with high precision. Once the basic developing process concluded, he used a small wooden pair of tongs to lift out an 8x10-inch pristine white photographic sheet that had been exposed to the closing film negative's shadow.

The emotional climax of Act III reached its peak within the darkroom's absolute silence.

No sound of howling wind drifted from outside. No sobbing remained. Nor was there any sound of dragging footsteps pacing across the wooden ceiling above. The darkroom sank into a majestic, sacred stillness, as though the entire universe were holding its breath alongside the final seconds of the young man's existence in the real world.

With graceful, controlled movements, Arya slowly submerged the clean white photographic sheet into the first tray containing the developer chemical.

He forced both eyes wide open, unblinking, staring straight into the surface of the chemical solution beginning to react chemically beneath the safelight's red glow. He wanted to see with his own eyes what was truly recorded at the end of his life.

The visual aesthetics of the chemicals working across the photographic paper's emulsion looked deeply hypnotic. Black lines crept slowly, forming the contours of the underground lab where he stood right now. The printing desk, the copper sink, the chemical bottles, and even the wooden door frame in the corner of the room were rendered with an exceptionally sharp level of detail.

Yet amidst the underground laboratory inside that photographic print, one sight made a final smile curve across Arya's lips.

Upon the concrete floor depicted within the photo, the exact corner where he stood right now... appeared empty. No human body stood there. No Arya Pratama holding wooden tongs. All that remained were the faint shadows of empty air and a pristine white photograph just perfectly printed.

A sincere smile graced Arya's face—the first truly calm smile since he lost his grandfather. He realized that he had now completely dissolved, shifted dimensions, and been permanently etched into the lethal catalog of the camera's lens.

His physical form in the real world had vanished without a trace, leaving behind his essence now living forever within the black-and-white celluloid frame.

Right as his consciousness fully drifted to merge with the safelight's red glow, that final photograph stopped reacting inside the tray.

The photographic paper displayed an image of the silent underground room... and atop the wash table, no one remained, leaving behind a blank photograph that slowly revealed a glass frame sealed tightly shut from the outside.
