Shadows Behind the Lens

6. The First Chemical Bath

The air inside the darkroom felt increasingly thin, pressing against Arya's chest until he was forced to gasp heavily for oxygen thick with the scent of metallic dust and aged grime. The absolute darkness that had momentarily swallowed the room was now slowly repopulated by the crimson glow of the safelight bouncing off the concrete walls, revealing the heavy beads of cold sweat cascading down Arya's temples.

He collapsed limply onto the cold concrete floor, his back pressing against the wall near the workbench. His hands were still shaking violently, clutching tightly to Grandfather Haris's diary, whose leather cover felt unpleasantly sticky.

"No... please, open the door! This isn't funny!" Arya rasped, his voice cracking in the dead silence of the room. He pushed himself up with whatever strength he had left, lunging at the wooden door and slamming his fists against its surface. "Grandfather! Open the door! Please!"

Yet, there was no response other than the hollow echo of his own frantic blows. The door remained deadlocked, as though it had fused completely with the solid masonry surrounding it.

Arya's breathing came in ragged hitches, his chest heaving rapidly. A severe panic attack threatened to shatter the last remnants of his sanity. He felt his entire body burning with a paralyzing terror. Trapped underground in a space this small with no way out, he could easily lose his mind within hours if he kept drowning in despair.

"Calm down, Arya... calm down. Don't let this fear kill you first," he whispered to himself, his voice trembling heavily as he tried to muffle his stifled sobs. He wiped away his tears with the sleeve of his jacket, which was soaked in sweat.

As a young man who had learned the basics of analog photography from his late grandfather during childhood, his panicked brain was slowly forced back toward logic. Amidst this extraordinary psychological terror, only one thing felt familiar and within his grasp: the process of developing analog film.

Arya swallowed hard, tearing his gaze away from the locked door and toward the workbench illuminated by the red glow. The biscuit tin filled with old film rolls still rested there, sitting right alongside a stainless steel developing tank and neat rows of chemical bottles.

"If that door refuses to open... then I have to find out what secret lies behind these film rolls," Arya muttered, his voice sounding shaky and fraught with doubt. Was he truly about to open Pandora's box? But what other choice did he have?

With sluggish steps and rubbery knees, Arya dragged himself toward the workbench. He reached for the antique biscuit tin and pried open its lid with a soft creak. Inside, dozens of black-and-white film rolls were stacked neatly. His trembling fingers selected the very first roll resting on top—a film bearing a paper label marked with the year 1985.

The film roll felt ice-cold to the touch, as though it had been frozen deep within permafrost for ages. Arya grabbed a small can opener and carefully pulled the negative strip from its canister, sliding it with precise skill into the stainless steel developing tank, exactly the way his grandfather had taught him.

He stepped over to the small sink in the corner of the room, where an old copper water faucet was installed. Arya slowly turned the copper valve.

Ssssshhh...

The gentle hiss of running water cut through the darkroom's silence, creating a monotonous rhythm that somewhat calmed his hammering heart. Arya prepared three plastic trays on the table: one filled with developer solution, a second with stop bath, and a final one containing fixer.

"All right... let's see what grandfather hid on this first roll," Arya whispered, trying to steady his resolve amidst the bone-chilling air of the darkroom.

He began mixing and pouring the developer solution into the film tank, agitating it with consistent circular motions according to standard timing. Every single second felt agonizingly slow, dragging sluggishly through a silence choked with heavy tension.

Once the initial washing and fixing steps were complete, Arya used a pair of small wooden tongs to lift a pristine 8x10 inch white photographic sheet that had been exposed to the negative strip's shadow. With delicate care, he slowly lowered the white paper into the first tray containing the chemical developer.

The atmosphere in the darkroom plunged into an absolute hush. Only the soft rush of the tap water and the sound of Arya's ragged breathing rattled in his throat. His eyes widened, staring straight down at the surface of the chemical solution inside the tray beneath the safelight's red glow.

At first, the paper's surface remained stark white and featureless. But slowly, chemical reactions began to work their magic upon the photographic emulsion. Faint lines slowly took shape, outlining the contours of a classic living room furnished with antique decor.

Arya held his breath, his heart feeling as though it had stopped beating altogether.

Inside the chemical bath, the silhouetted image grew sharper and clearer by the second. The shapes of the floor, the walls, and the window drapes began to emerge with harsh, high-contrast black-and-white tones.

Yet it wasn't the furniture that made Arya's blood freeze dead in his tracks.

Right in the center of the white paper, amidst the faint shadows of family members smiling stiffly, a brand-new detail emerged that defied every law of reality. A disproportionately large human face—its eyes stark white without pupils, and its mouth stretched into a wide, skin-tearing grin—slowly developed out of the solution, glaring with sharp, direct hostility straight out of the paper, as though it were staring right into Arya's eyes at that very second.
