Shadows Behind the Lens

8. The Anomaly in the Corner

Arya's breath instantly caught in his throat. His lungs abruptly refused to draw in air, while the blood in his veins ran stone cold, turning into frost that raced rapidly through his entire circulatory system. His legs felt bolted to the concrete floor, unable to twitch so much as an inch. His eyes dilated in horror, staring blankly at the black-and-white print hanging from the clothesline.

That pitch-black shadow—with its grotesquely unnatural and horrifying proportions—now clung with chilling clarity to the photographic emulsion. Its unnaturally long, emaciated arms dangled downward, gripping the little boy's shoulders tightly inside the print, while the poor child’s face in the image looked blurred, as though screaming in silence.

"N-no... impossible..." he ranted in a voice so raspy, violently trembling, and barely audible. Tears of pure terror spilled down his cheeks once more, though he lacked the strength even to wipe them away. "What... what cheap parlor trick is this? How can... how can something this horrifying exist inside a photograph from 1985?"

His brain screamed hysterically, flatly rejecting the nightmarish reality unfolding before his eyes. Yet the visual proof was undeniable.

Driven by a morbid curiosity clashing with a paralyzing terror that crippled his common sense, Arya slowly raised his trembling hand. His fingers groped blindly across the workbench, searching for a magnifying loupe—the small optical glass photographers use to inspect the sharpness of film negatives.

With hands shaking so violently that the loupe’s handle rattled against its metal frame, Arya brought the magnifying glass close to the photo's surface, aiming straight for the corner of the living room window in the background of that 1985 family portrait.

The safelight's red glow refracted sharply through the loupe's lens, magnifying details he had previously missed.

And at that exact second, Arya's heart felt as though it had torn clean out of his chest. A choked shriek tore free from his throat.

Through the magnification of the loupe, Arya saw with terrifying clarity that the tall, bizarrely proportioned black shadow was not merely an ink blot or an emulsion flaw. The entity possessed a horrifying physical form: its body was tall, impossibly thin, stretching upward to graze the ceiling inside the photo, draped in a decaying, dark vintage suit. What made Arya's blood run white-hot with terror was the creature's head—it had no face at all, featuring only a flat, pitch-black surface pierced by a pair of sunken, hollow eyes radiating a deadly void.

And even more terrifyingly, one of the creature's elongated arms—which had previously rested on the boy's shoulder—now slowly—moving in real-time across the photographic paper—shifted its position, stretching long past the window drapes to touch the mother's shoulder inside the picture. Meanwhile, the mother in the image turned her head in sheer terror toward the shadow, her mouth gaped wide in a silent, eternal scream.

"ARGHHH!" Arya shrieked hysterically, instinctively hurling the magnifying glass to the floor where it shattered into pieces.

He collapsed backward, his spine slamming hard against the cold concrete floor of the darkroom. His breath came in wild, ragged gasps, his chest heaving at breakneck speed as though he had just sprinted miles without oxygen. A crushing panic paralyzed his entire body. His mind spun in chaos, realizing that the film rolls inside the tin box were not mere documentations of the past, but rather lethal logs of terror.

That creature... that entity was real. And it documented every single one of its prey through the lens of a camera.

"Grandfather... Grandfather, why did you keep this cursed thing? Why didn't you destroy it?!" Arya wept on the floor, cursing his own stupidity for opening that Pandora's box.

He curled into a ball of terror, hugging his knees tightly in the corner of the room, forcing his head down to avoid looking at the photograph hanging from the clothesline. The underground room felt increasingly suffocating; the red safelight suddenly flickered wildly, creating the illusion that the laboratory walls were breathing and closing in around him.

Arya squeezed his eyes shut, praying all this was just a nightmare that would vanish when he finally opened his eyes. He prayed with the last remaining fragments of his crumbling sanity, hoping for a miracle to pluck him straight out of this miniature hell.

Yet, amidst his muffled sobs and the ragged rush of his breathing, another sound suddenly pierced the darkroom's silence.

The faint, unmistakable whisper of coarse vintage fabric rubbing together—swish... swish... swish—echoed with chilling clarity, shifting slowly from the pitch-black corner of the room directly behind Arya's current position.

Arya froze. Every hair on his body stood straight up, refusing to turn around or twitch a single muscle. His heart stopped beating for a fraction of a second.

Before he could even process the terror threatening to crush his heart, a freezing breath—reeking of damp graveyard earth and pungent chemical solutions—suddenly brushed against his exposed nape.

And right against his ear, a heavy, raspy, horrifyingly echoing voice whispered softly, slithering straight into his mind:

"That was just the first roll... wait until you see the next one."
