Shadows Behind the Lens
9. The Second Roll, The Closing Distance
The cold whisper that had just slid across his nape left a horrifying vibration racing down Arya's spine. The air inside the darkroom felt increasingly dense, tightening around his throat in an invisible grip that made every single inhalation feel like swallowing shards of glass. His heart thundered wildly, battering against the walls of his ribcage as though desperate to escape this violently trembling body.
"No... I can't just stay put here. If I stop, I'm dead," Arya muttered brokenly, his voice nearly drowned out by the ragged rush of his own breathing.
With the remnants of his strength utterly drained by terror, he forced his rubbery, jelly-like legs to push himself up. His knees shook violently, nearly sending him crashing back down to the cold concrete floor. Arya swallowed hard, his throat feeling parched and burning. The explosive panic of a moment ago was slowly undergoing a psychological metamorphosis—morphing into a cold, numb, and hollow despair. He no longer had any choice left except to see this horror through to the very bottom of its abyss.
His bloodshot eyes stared blankly at the antique biscuit tin lying open on the workbench. With a limp hand shaking violently, he reached his fingers inside, felt around the contents, and pulled out the second film roll.
The small paper label stuck to the canister bore a handwritten year: 1988.
Three years had passed since that first roll from 1985. A terrifying question instantly raged through his mind: what had happened to the family in that photo over the span of those three years? Had the entity stayed put, or had it crept closer?
"All right... let's see just how close you are now," Arya whispered bitterly, a desperate, cynical smile curving across his pale lips.
He plunged back into the agonizing analog developing process. His movements were now far more mechanical, driven by pure adrenaline mixed with a cocktail of terror and morbid curiosity. Arya mixed the chemicals in the tray, dropped the 1988 negative strip into the processing tank, agitated it with a consistent rhythm, and finally pulled a pristine white photographic sheet from the holding tank.
Using a pair of small wooden tongs, he slowly lowered the white paper into the developer tray beneath the safelight's red glow.
The atmosphere in the darkroom froze in absolute silence. No sound remained save for the pounding of Arya's heart echoing in his own ears. His eyes dilated sharply, staring straight down at the surface of the chemical bath as it began to react, conjuring the contours of the image.
Black lines materialized. The furniture of the studio's living room reappeared, just as it had before. The father, the mother, and the young boy still stood in their exact same spots, smiling stiffly toward the camera lens.
Yet the moment Arya lifted the print and brought it closer to the main red beam, the blood in his veins instantly boiled with a wave of terror far more devastating than anything before.
That 1988 family portrait displayed a horrifying, unnatural transformation.
The tall, black shadow in a vintage suit that had stood far back behind the window drapes in the 1985 roll was no longer there. The entity had advanced several paces, pierced through space, and now stood directly behind the mother in the photo. Its unnaturally long, emaciated, blackened arms were wrapped tightly around the poor woman's neck, clasping her in a suffocating, lethal embrace, while the mother's facial expression in the picture had twisted into a rigid mask of terror with wide-staring eyes.
Arya staggered backward, his spine slamming against the chemical rack and sending several glass bottles clinking loudly. His breathing cut out entirely.
"Oh, God... it's moving closer. It's actually getting closer!" Arya shrieked hysterically, clutching handfuls of his own hair.
The stark visual comparison between the first and second rolls laid bare an utterly horrifying pattern: the entity was not standing still. Every single time a roll of film was developed across the years, the entity shortened the distance, creeping out from the background and stepping closer to its prey one agonizing pace at a time as time marched on.
It was a patient hunter, logging every single second leading up to its execution.
With hands shaking violently, Arya laid the 1988 print down on the workbench, preparing to steady himself before facing the subsequent rolls. Yet before he could tear his gaze away, an anomaly defying every boundary of sanity unfolded right before his eyes.
As Arya stared at the print beneath the red light, the mother's hollow eyes in the photograph suddenly blinked slowly.
Not an optical illusion. Not a trick of the light. Those painted eyeballs shifted, locking a gaze directly onto Arya with profound terror, before a droplet of thick, black liquid finally seeped from the corner of the woman's eye in the image, trickling downward to stain the surface of the photographic paper resting on the table.
