10. Tactics of Fire and Shadow

"Cover your ears and get down!" Gilang screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice nearly drowned out by the thunderous impact that shattered the exterior concrete walls of the underground safehouse.

Before Nara could even catch a breath of panic, the old iron door in the corner of the room warped inward, blasted by a high-pressure kinetic shockwave. Its heavy steel mounting bolts sheared off and flew through the air like loose scraps of paper. Thick, toxic white smoke hissed inward instantly, mixing with the reek of ozone and dense paralytic gas that choked the room within seconds.

Boom! Boom!

"Ugh! What is this smell? I can't breathe!" Nara choked out, coughing violently as she groped the concrete floor with tear-filled eyes. She ripped off her heavily fogged glasses, crawling frantically beside the console desk.

"Military-grade paralytic gas! Don't inhale deeply or your motor functions will shut down completely in ten seconds!" Gilang snapped sharply. With a swift motion, he ripped the bottom hem of his shirt, dampened it with a splash of water from a water bottle, and tossed it toward Rania, who was already cowering weakly in the corner. "Use this to cover your nose, kid! Don't let go!"

Rania nodded weakly, receiving the damp cloth with trembling hands. Tears mixed with cold sweat down her cheeks. "Boss... they're coming... are we going to die here?"

"We aren't dying until my monthly coffee tab is paid off!" Gilang shot back with a faint grin, though cold sweat beaded on his temples. He drew the salt-lined short sword from his back, the metal blade glowing with a bluish-white light amid the thickening white fog.

From behind the shattered ruins of the iron door, dark figures in black tactical gear stepped forward in unison. In the front row, a gigantic Executor-Class Cybrid with glowing red porcelain eyes lunged forward, dipping slightly to clear the low ceiling of the cramped room. Its cybernetic arm whirred as it deployed a spinning, high-speed plasma chainsaw blade.

“Target locked. Execution initiated immediately. No prisoners,” the synthetic voice from the cybrid's internal speaker ground down their mental resolve.

"Damn it, that iron monster is back," Gilang sneered, the muscles in his neck tightening.

Suddenly, Renata stepped past Gilang. A cold, uncompromising expression settled firmly across the woman's face. All traces of hesitation from the nano-tracker discovery vanished; her survival instincts as Ant Corp's former Director of Operations took complete control.

"Gilang! Take Nara and Rania out through the emergency drainage tunnel under the console desk right now!" Renata ordered in a firm, unarguable voice.

Gilang started, turning a sharp glare toward Renata. "Are you out of your mind?! Wanting to play lone hero here by yourself? If you stay behind, they'll chop you up into cybernetic dog food!"

"I know the exact flaws in this place's security protocol protocols, Gilang!" Renata shouted back, her voice cutting through the rising thunder of energy gunfire raining down on the room. She punched several emergency triggers on the main console before her. "The backup server warehouse on the lower floor houses a mini hydrogen reactor core. If I manually trigger an overload, this entire block will blow up in two minutes!"

"And you'll be blown to pieces with it, Renata!" Gilang barked, fury and disbelief clashing in his chest. "I'm not running away and leaving you to die here!"

"This isn't a pointless sacrifice, it's the only way we all make it out!" Renata stared straight into Gilang's eyes, her gaze deep and filled with absolute conviction. "Get those kids out of here, Gilang! Run!"

Before Gilang could argue further, Renata fired her energy pistol straight into the main control panel on the wall.

Bzzzt... pyarrr!

The room's electrical grid suffered a total short circuit. The main lights died instantly, replaced by the slow, sweeping crimson glow of emergency strobe lights. A self-destruct alarm wailed loudly: “Warning: Thermal overload detected. Evacuate area immediately.”

The Ant Corp forces outside began unleashing volley after volley of gunfire. Blue plasma beams lanced wildly through the air, smashing the console table and detonating holographic monitors into showers of glittering glass shards.

Gilang growled in frustration. He knew he had no time to argue. In a single fluid motion, he snatched up the limp form of Rania, hoisting her into a fireman's carry.

"Nara! Hold tight to my jacket! Don't let go!" Gilang barked at the hacker, who was nearly stumbling from panic.

Nara nodded fiercely, gripping the back of Gilang's bomber jacket with both trembling hands. "O-okay, right behind you, Lang!"

"Move, into the drainage pipe!" Renata commanded once more while laying down a string of high-precision suppressive fire toward two mercenary goons trying to close in.

Gilang kicked the floor grate off the drainage outlet beneath the desk, shoving Nara down into the dark tunnel first, followed by Rania. Before crawling down himself, Gilang glanced back one last time at Renata standing alone amidst the billowing smoke, surrounded by advancing enemies.

"Don't die before I collect on that coffee debt, Renata!" Gilang snarled, then dropped himself down into the underground tunnel.

Inside the burning room, Renata took a deep breath. She stared down the Executor-Class Cybrid as it raised its heavy plasma arm high, preparing to finish her.

"Goodbye, suited cowards," Renata whispered coldly.

With resolute confidence, Renata slammed her palm down on the massive red button at the central console—triggering the complete discharge of the backup hydrogen reactor energy.

Boommmmm!

A cataclysmic explosion roared through the underbelly of Sector 9. A wall of searing thermal fire swallowed the underground warehouse whole, buckling concrete pillars and plunging the floor into a blinding ocean of flame.

Several hundred meters away from the blast site, beneath the pouring night rain in an exterior drainage tunnel, the iron manhole cover suddenly blew off from the immense pressure of the shockwave.

Clang!

Gilang, Nara, and Rania were hurled out onto a puddle of wet mud in a deserted street on the district's outskirts. They tumbled across the asphalt before coming to a halt near the curb. Gilang scrambled up, breathing heavily, checking Nara and Rania, who were coughing violently from residual smoke but confirmed safe without major injuries.

"Are you three okay?" Gilang asked frantically, examining Rania.

"I-I'm okay, Boss... but... but Madam Renata..." Rania sobbed weakly, staring back toward the thick plume of black smoke billowing from the warehouse ruins behind them.

Gilang didn't answer. His heart hammered as if trying to burst out of his chest. The blast had been massive. Wasting not a single second, Gilang ignored the searing pain in his freshly reopened left arm wound, staggering back toward the drain opening that still belched hot steam and tiny sparks of embers.

"Renata!" Gilang yelled hoarsely, pushing through the smoldering debris of shattered masonry.

Amidst the collapsed concrete slabs and small licking fires, a motionless body lay near a crumbled corner wall. Her suit jacket was tattered and covered in black ash, her right hand still clutching a half-melted energy pistol.

"Damn it... damn it, don't you dare die on me now!" Gilang grunted in panic. He lunged forward, braving the searing heat, and hauled Renata's body away from the wreckage just as a massive chunk of cement slab collapsed precisely where she had been lying.

Gilang dragged Renata out of the kill zone, gently laying her down onto the wet grass by the roadside while the heavy night rain beat down relentlessly upon them both.

"Renata! Wake up! Hey!" Gilang tapped her cheek, now smeared with black soot.

Slowly, Renata's eyelids fluttered. She blinked several times, adjusting her vision against the cold, skin-piercing rain. A soft cough escaped her lips, expelling a wisp of smoke.

"Gilang...?" Renata's voice sounded profoundly weak, raspy, and barely a whisper.

Hearing that voice, the crushing weight on Gilang's chest lifted by half. He exhaled a shaky, ragged breath, an overwhelming wave of relief flooding his core, eclipsing any physical pain he felt.

"Yeah, it's me, you stubborn woman," Gilang said in a gravelly tone, a faint smile mixed with a relieved laugh finally touching his rain-drenched face. "If you're going to commit suicide by blowing up a building, at least make sure you don't inconvenience a broke freelancer to drag you out."

Renata managed a weak smile, though her entire body felt bruised and battered from the explosion's shockwave. She looked straight into Gilang's eyes. Their faces were inches apart under the pounding sheets of rain. Raindrops streamed down from her plastered black hair, tracing her sharp yet now fragile jawline.

For a moment, neither spoke. The roar of the rain and distant sirens seemed to melt away, leaving a profound silence between their locked gazes. A fresh mutual respect, a hidden awe, and an invisible emotional bond had forged strongly across the line of death—transforming their chilly professional partnership into something far deeper.

Nara and Rania stood a few paces behind them, letting the moment pass in quiet solidarity, thankful to see them both breathing.

Renata slowly raised a trembling right hand, lightly brushing the torn shoulder of Gilang's bomber jacket, and whispered softly, her eyes never leaving the freelancer's pupils:

"Thank you... for pulling me back from hell, Gilang."

Gilang swallowed hard, returning that sharp yet warm gaze in silence, fully aware that the real war was only just beginning—and now, they stood on the exact same line to face it until the end.
