The Cast-Off Wife's Revenge
13. Fractures Among the Venomous Snakes
The afternoon air inside a secluded cafe tucked away in a quiet corner of the city felt suffocating, despite the air conditioner humming loudly in the corner. The venue had been deliberately chosen for its lack of patrons, far from the prying eyes of the public and business associates. Yet, within one of the innermost booths enclosed by artificial foliage, the atmosphere was burning hot enough to practically scorch the surrounding air.
Clara sat with her legs crossed restlessly. The face usually caked in heavy cosmetics now looked disheveled, remnants of rage and panic flashing in her eyes as she glared fiercely at the man across from her.
Rehan sat hunched over, both elbows braced against the small table while his fingers clutched tightly around a cold cup of coffee. His handsome face looked haggard, dark bruised eye-bags framing his face from days of sleeplessness.
"Rehan! Don't you dare try to avoid me!" Clara's voice hissed sharply, kept at a low volume so as not to attract the attention of the cafe staff. "The bank just sent a third warning notice! That luxury apartment is going to be repossessed the day after tomorrow because the monthly installments are overdue, and my credit cards are completely blocked! How am I supposed to live if it's like this?!"
Rehan looked up, glaring with profound hatred at the woman he had once pedestaled as his escape. Gone were the pet names and spoiled tones between them. What remained were two venomous snakes running out of prey, turning to tear into one another.
"Do you think I give a damn about your apartment?!" Rehan snapped in a choked voice, the veins in his neck bulging as he fought a frustration pushed to its absolute limit. "I'm about to lose my company, my assets are frozen by my own wife, and you still have the nerve to whine about your apartment installments and designer bags?!"
Clara gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief at the snap. "Oh! So now you're blaming me, huh?! Don't forget, Rehan! Whose bright idea was it to steal Aileen's family fortune and get rid of her in the first place? It came straight from your own crooked brain!"
"Shut your mouth!" Rehan hissed furiously, slamming his fist down onto the cafe table until the coffee cup atop it rattled violently. "If you hadn't been so greedy demanding excessive perks and constantly pressuring me every single day, our moves never would have been exposed by Aileen! You are a plague, Clara!"
Hearing those cursed words, Clara's blood boiled instantly. Her self-respect shattered into a million pieces. The mistress bolted upright from her chair, pointing a trembling, slender finger right in Rehan's face amid overflowing rage.
"A plague, you say?!" Clara shrieked high-pitched, ignoring all warnings to keep her voice down. "In case you forgot, Rehan! I sacrificed my youth to be your mistress for years! And now, after you're cornered and nearly bankrupt, you dare to toss me aside just like that?!"
Rehan lunged up, roughly grabbing Clara's wrist until the woman winced in pain. "Listen to me, Clara! If you dare pull any stunts or cause another scene, I swear you won't see a single cent of what little money I have left!"
Clara jerked her hand free with intense hatred. Tears of rage slipped down her cheeks—not out of sorrow, but from the brutal realization that the man before her was a spineless coward ready to throw her away the second she lost her utility.
"Let go, you bastard!" Clara cursed in a voice trembling with threatening malice. "If you dare dump me and leave me destitute, don't blame me if I expose every single one of your crimes! I have voice recordings of all your rotten plans, corporate embezzlement documents, and even the plan for that fatal crash! I'm taking the whole lot straight to the police and the media today!"
The threat struck Rehan like a lightning bolt crashing down in broad daylight. His face turned ghastly pale. He realized the woman sitting across from him was far more dangerous than he had ever imagined.
"You... you really are an ungrateful bitch!" Rehan whispered in sheer terror.
Clara flashed a sharp, wicked grin, straightening her expensive handbag with shaking hands. "We'll see who goes down first, Rehan!" Clara snapped, then spun around and stormed out of the cafe, slamming the glass door behind her.
Rehan slumped limply back into his chair, dropping his head down onto the table as he breathed in ragged, terrified gasps. The relationship once built upon ambition and greed had officially mutated into a raging hellfire consuming them from within.
Far from that place, inside a cozy, dimly lit private study, Aileen sat leaning back in her executive chair. At the desk before her, a tall computer setup with a specialized recording device flickered quietly.
Beside her, Damian stood with his arms crossed, staring down at the monitor screen with a crooked smile of absolute satisfaction.
The sound of the fierce argument between Rehan and Clara that had just unfolded at the cafe played crystal-clear through a micro-audio bug planted inside Clara's handbag—a secret investigative gift installed by Damian's operatives a few days prior.
“...In case you forgot, Rehan! I sacrificed my youth... If you dare toss me aside... I'm taking the whole lot straight to the police and the media today!” Clara's shrill, angry voice echoed from the small speakers.
Aileen listened to every single second of that brawl with a subtle smile curving her lips. There was no pity, nor was there any shock. All that pulsed within her chest was an overwhelming wave of satisfaction watching those two traitors turn to devour one another.
"They're starting to tear each other apart, Aileen," Damian murmured softly, glancing at the woman beside him with a gaze overflowing with awe. "Their defenses are completely shattered from within. You haven't even delivered your final blow yet."
Aileen switched off the recording device, then looked up to meet Damian's eyes. The smile on her lips stretched wider, radiating a cold, lethal allure.
"Good," Aileen whispered in a calm yet triumphant tone. "Let them claw each other to shreds first. When they're utterly drained of energy and trust, that is when this stage play must be brought to an eternal close."
Damian lowered his frame slightly, leveling his posture with Aileen's chair, before reaching out to take the woman's hand and pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles.
"What scenario would you like to play next, my queen? Whatever it is, my forces are locked and ready to move at your command."
Aileen stared deep into Damian's pupils, feeling the warmth of his love and the formidable strength flowing through the man's grip. "The final act," Aileen answered sharply. "We are going to lead them right back to where it all should have ended—the edge of the abyss."
