The Cast-Off Wife's Revenge
19. Iron Bars
The atmosphere inside the temporary police holding cell block felt freezing, stuffy, and suffocating. The damp, rough cement walls echoed the occasional sound of patrolling guards' footsteps. In a small iron-barred cell located in the absolute corner, a man sat huddled all alone on the hard, unpadded cement floor.
Rehan.
The man who had always appeared immaculate in expensive suits, with neatly styled hair and an authoritative smile inside skyscraper boardrooms, now looked like an aged beggar who had lost half his soul. His white shirt was soiled with mud and dried blood, his suit jacket was gone entirely, and his handsome face was marred by bruises and profound, bone-deep exhaustion. His eyes were red and swollen, staring blankly at the cement floor before him with a hollow, disoriented gaze.
"Impossible... All of this is impossible..." Rehan muttered repeatedly in a raspy, hoarse, barely audible voice. His voice trembled violently within the narrow enclosure. "I am the managing director... I had everything... How could I end up in this rotten place?!"
He hugged both knees tightly to his chest, mourning the absolute zero point of his ruined life. The wealth of his late father-in-law had vanished completely, his career was shattered into a million pieces, and his social reputation was obliterated without a trace. He had lost everything overnight—a tragic downfall brought on entirely by his own greed.
Suddenly, the sharp metallic clank of an iron key echoed right outside his cell.
A prison guard stepped closer, tossing two thick brown envelopes straight through the iron bars. The envelopes landed right before Rehan with a soft thud.
"Rehan Baskoro, there are two important letters for you today," the guard said in a cold, expressionless tone. "The first is the official copy of the total bankruptcy ruling for PT Hartono Jaya Utama, and the second... is an absolute divorce petition along with claims for marital asset division from your wife, Aileen Hartono."
Hearing those words, Rehan jolted violently. His entire body shook uncontrollably. He crawled forward with hands bound in chain-link handcuffs, grabbing both envelopes with trembling, terrified fingers.
He tore open the first envelope. The initial paper he read was the official state document declaring corporate bankruptcy, followed by the seizure report on all personal assets held under his name to settle the accumulating corporate debts. Everything was wiped out. Not a single asset remained for him.
With hands shaking with increasing violence, Rehan opened the second envelope. Inside lay the absolute divorce petition filed by Aileen, accompanied by watertight evidence of fraud, infidelity, and the premeditated murder plot he had orchestrated. At the bottom of the document sat Aileen's signature, affixed above a legal seal—a firm, unyielding signature signifying that the woman had severed their marital ties without a single sliver of forgiveness.
"Aileen... No! You cannot divorce me!" Rehan screamed hysterically, clutching the legal petition until it tore into shreds. Useless tears of remorse streamed down his cheeks. He dropped his head against the cell floor, weeping uncontrollably. "I need help... Please, help me..."
Amidst that suffocating despair, the guard's leftover administrative phone—permitted for legal matters—suddenly chimed briefly on the desk outside the cell, flashing a short text notification from the very person he had defended to the death: Clara.
With his remaining strength and a fragile spark of false hope, Rehan dragged his body toward the bars, begging the guard to let him look at the phone. The guard, feeling a mix of pity and disgust, finally illuminated the text message screen before Rehan.
The message from Clara was written with chilling, heart-piercing coldness:
“Rehan, stop contacting me and never speak my name again at the upcoming trial. You are a foolish, cowardly man who dragged me down into this criminal abyss. I have already appointed a lawyer to sever all ties between us, and I refuse to come visit you in prison. Enjoy the rest of your life in there all by yourself. Goodbye, loser.”
Reading that text message, the world around Rehan collapsed instantly. The crushing wave of pain and betrayal delivered by the woman he had pedestaled above his own wife's suffering stripped Rehan of his remaining sanity.
"Clara! Damn you! Why did you leave me?!" Rehan roared like a madman, hammering his fists against the iron cell bars until his knuckles bled. "You venomous snake! Give everything back to me!"
His screams echoed harshly, yet not a single soul cared. The sound of his hysterical weeping and remorseful wails slowly drowned within the deep, isolating silence of the cell block.
The guard scoffed in annoyance, pulling the small table back away from Rehan's cell.
Creak...SLAM!
The thick iron cell door shoved shut with a resounding, sharp metallic clang that echoed piercingly, locking Rehan away in eternal darkness all alone without a single ray of hope left in his life.
Meanwhile, far away from the foul stench of prison iron bars, atop a luxury high-rise penthouse enclosed by transparent glass walls, the morning dawn broke with breathtaking beauty.
Streaks of golden morning sunlight slowly climbed from the eastern horizon, parting thin clouds and warming every corner of the room with brilliant rays.
Aileen stood near the expansive glass window, clad in a pristine white silk morning dress that fluttered softly in the gentle breeze. In her hand, a cup of warm coffee billowed a thin ribbon of steam. She gazed out the window, watching the city's hustle and bustle come back to life below.
Gone were the dark shadows, gone was the fear, and gone were the tears of anguish. All that pulsed within her chest was absolute liberation, inner peace, and a pristine new chapter of life cleansed of every stain from the past.
From behind, a pair of strong, warm arms suddenly wrapped gently around her waist. A tender kiss landed atop her head, followed by the baritone voice she cherished above all:
"Good morning, the most beautiful woman in the world," Damian whispered softly near her ear, channeling boundless happiness and unconditional love.
Aileen looked up, glancing back to find Damian smiling warmly down at her. She set her coffee cup down onto the table, then turned her body around to wrap her arms tightly around Damian's neck, letting the man's warmth complete her freedom.
"Good morning to you too, my husband," Aileen replied with the happiest smile gracing her lips.
The morning sun continued its ascent, illuminating a new day, a fresh future, and true love that now officially belonged to the two of them for all eternity—far away from the shadows of the dark ravine, now sealed shut by justice forever.
