The Dragon King's Rebellion
12. An Ocean of Humanity Marches on the Gates
The final seconds of the colossal countdown hanging in Obsidian Castle’s blood-red sky ticked away agonizingly slow, as if deliberately stretching the raw nerves of the millions of humans trapped inside their full-dive capsules.
00:00:03... 00:00:02... 00:00:01... 00:00:00.
BOOM!
A digital sonic boom reverberated across the entire virtual continent of Chronos Online. In tandem with the blast, the skies—once stained a dismal crimson—suddenly bloomed with thousands of blinding pillars of white light. These were the mass spawn points—the coordinates where millions of players from every corner of the earth were being dropped simultaneously straight into the theater of war.
From atop the castle's highest parapet, the sweeping vista defied the scale of any war recorded in online gaming history.
The lush, sprawling green horizons of Chronos Online were instantly choked out by an infinite ocean of humanity. Rank upon rank of players hailing from countless races, factions, and international guilds spilled out to completely blanket the valleys, hillsides, and surrounding forests encircling the base of Obsidian Castle’s mountain peaks. They arrived armed to the teeth with magic-infused heavy artillery, bleeding-edge plasma cannons, cosmic staves pulsing with blinding magical light, and futuristic-fantasy hybrid armored combat vehicles.
"Good grief..." the Shadow Knight Commander whispered from behind the battlement, his eyes reflecting a mixture of awe and sheer horror as he stared at the human tide stretching as far as the eye could see below. "Their numbers... they're like the sand on the ocean shore. They have no end, Your Majesty."
"They are no longer mere quest-seeking parties," Valor stated coldly, standing upright atop the main rampart wall with his dark cloak snapping violently in the gale-force storm winds. "They are the entire population of hunters from the outside world, marching in the name of pure greed."
Down in the lowlands crowding the castle gates, the atmosphere was supercharged and deafening, roaring with battle cries, cocky laughter, and barking tactical commands issued by mega-guild leaders.
"Hear my instructions, Crimson Fang!" yelled a player clad in blazing gold armor hefting a massive plasma greatsword across his shoulder—Marcus, an American guild master—booming through his party’s internal comms mic to thousands of his members. "Don't get greedy! We plow through the frontline defenses first, and make sure we secure the first hit on the main boss for an extra five-million-dollar corporate bounty!"
On the opposite side of the valley, a contingent of European players draped in pristine white Mage robes, led by a woman named Elena, began chanting a massive synchronized warding spell.
"Gather your mana! Fuse ice and elemental fire into a cosmic-grade plasma barrier!" Elena shouted, lifting her crystal staff high into the air. "Today, we tear down the mad dragon's fortress!"
The war chants of millions shook the earth, generating violent tremors that rippled straight down to Obsidian Castle's deepest foundations. They marched in lockstep within lethal military battle formations, flashing high-end armor wrapped in custom visual effects that reflected a thousand shimmering hues beneath the blood-red sky. The spectacle was grand, cinematic, and reeked heavily of bloodlust and triumphant ambition.
The vanguard of the international player alliance began advancing in disciplined coordination. Heavy artillery units rolled forward, magic cannon barrels hummed as they sucked ambient mana from the air, and thousands of blades pointed toward the heavens, ready to devour whatever lay behind the fortress gates.
"They're moving, Your Majesty!" the Shadow Knight Commander called out, drawing his blade and spinning toward Valor. "Let me and the shadow troops lead the first line of defense!"
Valor raised his right hand, gesturing for the Commander to hold his ground. The draconian's face remained composed, though his reptilian gaze blazed with sharp, authoritative power.
"No, Commander," Valor replied firmly. "Today is the day we show them the true meaning of resistance. Let the Gatekeeper open the vanguard."
Hearing the order, the Gatekeeper—standing steadfast beside the grand staircase—let out a heavy snort. The sound carried the concussive pop of a localized blast wave. The massive one-eyed titan hoisted his gargantuan warhammer onto his shoulder and began a heavy, ground-shaking descent down the stairs toward the castle's main gates.
"It's been a long time since I crushed some arrogant bones," the Gatekeeper growled in a deep, booming register, a savage grin splitting his monstrous face.
Down below, the elite vanguard of the international alliance watched the giant iron gates of Obsidian Castle stir to life. The cadence of millions of marching boots slowly slowed to a halt, giving way to calculated tactical tension as they closed in on optimal striking range.
"Attention everyone! Target distance under one hundred meters!" a guild commander screamed through a global loudspeaker. "Lock and load! On three, blow that gate to dust!"
One... Two... Three...!
Before the commander could spit out the final count, the ground beneath the sea of players rattled violently—no mere tremor, but an engineered artificial earthquake that sent thousands stumbling off-balance.
KRRR-GHHH!
The screech of colossal metal grinding against ancient stone tore through the atmosphere. The main gates of Obsidian Castle, towering dozens of meters into the air, slowly swung outward, shifting with an overwhelmingly massive mechanical force.
Thick dust billowed from the expanding gap, obstructing the vanguard's view.
"Hold fire! Find out who's coming out!" the guild commander barked warnings to his ranks, raising a left hand to signal the artillery lines to stand down.
As the dust cloud slowly swept away by the howling crimson gale, the sight greeting the players at the front lines caught millions of breaths in their throats.
No massive army greeted them. No swarming hordes of monsters.
Standing entirely alone in the center of the wide-open gateway was a single, massive, one-eyed titan—the Gatekeeper. He wore a suit of battered, battle-scarred black iron armor, standing with a posture as unyielding as a mountain carved of solid rock. In his right hand, his colossal warhammer was planted directly into the earth, casting crackling arcs of bright blue static electricity across the ground.
The Gatekeeper raised his head slowly. His solitary eye burned with sharp intent, glaring down the infinite ocean of humanity filling the valley before him with a terrifying, chilling smirk.
Silence choked the space before the gates for several agonizing seconds. Millions of players froze, staring at the solitary figure daring to defy the entire world single-handedly.
"What the hell is he doing?" whispered a frontline player with a shaking voice, dropping his weapon half an inch in shock. "He's... he's all alone?"
Marcus, guild master of Crimson Fang, narrowed his eyes from atop his mechanical riding beast, then burst into a mocking laugh. "Just a stupid NPC looking for a fast track to the respawn screen! No mercy! Annihilate him right now!"
Hearing the order, the Gatekeeper didn't retreat an inch. Instead, he threw both arms wide, puffed out his chest, and let loose a thunderous roar of raw fury that split the heavens, challenging the millions of enemies before him without a shred of fear.
