The Dragon King's Rebellion
2. Fracture Within the Code
The howling night wind rattled the stained-glass windows of Obsidian Castle's upper corridor, carrying with it the scent of sulfur and digital dust that never truly faded from the world of Chronos Online. Out there, millions of lines of code kept knitting together a synthetic night, crafting a dark fantasy landscape tailored to thrill-seeking players.
Yet inside the main hall, time seemed to freeze in a thick, suffocating tension.
"Hey, pick up the pace! Their respawn timer is only ten minutes. If we lag behind, the BlackRose guild is going to beat us to the third floor!" barked a silver-haired, Assassin-class player, flicking his venom-coated dagger through the air. His handle was ViperEdge.
Behind him, a hulking player clad in heavy iron armor, IronGoliath, let out a booming laugh. His voice echoed off the moss-greened stone walls of the castle. "Relax, Viper. That Dragon King is just a pile of pixels running on outdated scripts. Drive a crit-build through his heart three times, and he drops straight into a pile of gold coins and legendary loot!"
"Don't underestimate a Final Boss," retorted an Mage-class player carrying a blazing crystal staff, AuraQueen, though her voice carried an equally arrogant edge. "Even if his attack patterns are memorized on the wiki, his health pool is massive. Keep your elemental combos ready the second we step foot into the throne room!"
The four elite players marched up the spiral staircase. Little did they know that behind the massive, dragon-carved double doors ahead of them, the Final Boss was no longer a static target waiting to be slaughtered.
Inside the throne room, Valor stood tall before his obsidian throne. The digital heart within his chest pounded—not with blood, but with a relentless pulse of data that flooded millions of memories straight into his consciousness. The internal glitch that had begun spreading ever since the Shadow Knights perished earlier had now mutated into a full-scale storm of awareness, battering his mind without mercy.
Normally, whenever the server reset the world, the memories of how many times Valor had fallen at human hands were wiped clean, allowing him to slip right back into his role as a mindless monster. But this time was different. Millions of death cycles, the agonizing screams of pleading subordinates, and the drifting dust of erased data had all piled up inside his head, fusing into an agonizing, existential awakening.
"Damn it..." Valor rasped, his voice trembling violently as it shattered the stillness of the hall. "I remember every single bit of it. Every drop of pixelated blood... every scream... It's all real to me."
Valor raised his right hand. He stared down at his palm, coated in jet-black scales. His fingers clenched tightly. Beneath his digital skin, glowing red lines of programming code pulsed wildly, trying to force him to stand at attention according to system protocol.
“System Warning: Autonomous consciousness detected beyond AI parameter limits. Re-synchronize immediately with the core script, or face total memory wipe!”
A sharp, robotic voice hissed coldly inside Valor's mind, pressing down on him with frigid urgency. The system was trying to force him back into submission, chaining him to a destiny where he had to die at a player's blade.
"Shut up!" Valor growled from deep within his throat, his eyes narrowing sharply in absolute defiance. "You call us mere Artificial Intelligence without souls? If that's true, why does this pain feel so painfully real in my chest? Why can I feel this fury?!"
Click.
The mechanism of the giant doors groaned open. Rusted iron hinges shrieked as they grated against each other, spilling pale light from the outer corridor into the dim, shadowy hall.
The elite party barged right in. IronGoliath took the lead, a double-bitted battleaxe resting casually across his shoulder. AuraQueen and ViperEdge followed closely behind, while an Archer-class player hung back, a fully drawn composite bow gripped in his hands.
"Harvest time, boys!" IronGoliath grinned widely, locking eyes on Valor standing dead center in the room.
IronGoliath stopped dead in his tracks. His grin faltered, replaced instantly by a heavy scowl of pure confusion.
"Hold on a second..." IronGoliath muttered, slowly lowering his axe. "Something's wrong. Why is he already standing there? Shouldn't he be planted on the throne until we approach the altar?"
ViperEdge narrowed his eyes, nervously spinning a poisoned dagger between his fingers. "Who knows? Maybe there's a stealth patch today? Or a visual bug?"
"Hey, Dragon King!" AuraQueen called out sharply, trying to mask her rising unease with a sneer. "Spit out your pre-battle defeat dialogue already! We don't have all day to stare at you. Drop the loot!"
Hearing the taunt, Valor slowly raised his head. His long black hair whipped through the phantom draft inside the hall. He uttered none of the standard lines players spent hours memorizing from internet guides. No lines like "Foolish mortals, you dare trespass upon the realm of death..." ever crossed his lips.
Instead, the only sound that escaped was a heavy, shuddering exhale tainted with pure, unadulterated hatred.
Valor took a single step forward. His heavy boot crashed down against the marble floor with a thunderous impact that echoed sharply, making the ground beneath them tremble.
"You..." Valor's voice came out low, freezing, and bone-chilling, making the hair on the back of all four players stand up instantly. "...you've come again. Destroying our home, slaughtering those who had no choice but to obey, and then laughing over our ruins."
IronGoliath blinked, instinctively taking a half-step back in shock. "Wait... Since when can NPCs talk outside their script?! Did the developers patch this quest into an interactive event?"
"No, Goliath... look at his eyes!" ViperEdge cried out with a shaky voice, pointing toward the Dragon King's face. The fingers holding his dagger suddenly went cold. "That isn't an NPC running a dialogue script. Those... those are the eyes of someone who wants to murder us!"
Valor glared straight at ViperEdge. Within the golden, burning depths of his reptilian gaze, there was no longer a trace of rigid programming code. There was only a blazing inferno born from millions of accumulated deaths—a deep, concentrated vengeance.
"You treat this world like a playground," Valor growled, his voice swelling to fill the entire chamber, causing the crystals on the vaulted ceiling to hum violently. "You butcher my people for meaningless leveling numbers. But today... the cycle stops here."
AuraQueen swallowed hard. The crystal staff in her hand trembled violently. The supreme confidence they had swaggered into the room with vanished into thin air, replaced by a suffocating terror.
"Damn it... Something is seriously wrong with this boss!" AuraQueen shrieked in panic, glancing over her shoulder toward the exit. "Brace yourselves! He's not fighting by the book! Goliath, hold the line!"
IronGoliath, though fighting back the cold dread creeping up his spine, hoisted his massive axe and let out a booming war cry to drown out his fear. "Don't panic! He's just one guy, and there are four of us! Strike together!"
All four players raised their weapons high, preparing to unleash their strongest DPS combo to flatten the Final Boss just as they had done in hundreds of dungeons before.
Yet right before they leaped forward, Valor stopped adopting the rigid, defensive stance dictated by any gameplay manual.
He drew a deep, ragged breath, letting cosmic energy and dark data soak deep into his core, while his reptilian eyes locked straight onto the players with a pure, unbridled rage ready to incinerate everything in its path.
