The Dragon King's Rebellion

9. The Bonds of the NPCs

The scent of residual lightning and evaporating digital dust slowly faded from Obsidian Castle's main corridor. Once the elite Phantom Edge intruders had been thoroughly wiped out, the castle plunged back into a profound silence—not the rigid, lifeless quiet of before, but a stillness heavy with tension and a fragile sense of relief.

Inside the dim main hall, illuminated by the flickering glow of magical torches, Valor sat cross-legged on the cracked marble floor. His dark cloak draped beside him, while the cosmic energy claws on his hands had dimmed into calm, obsidian-black lines.

Moments later, heavy footsteps crunched against the stone. From behind a shadowed pillar, two figures stepped into the ring of torchlight. The Shadow Knight Commander—his cloak tattered and his helm half-scarred—walked side-by-side with the colossal Gatekeeper. They came to a halt a few paces before Valor, then slowly dropped to one knee in reverence.

"Rise," Valor’s voice was heavy yet gentle, breaking the stillness of the hall. "In this room, there are no more kings and pawns. We are merely creatures trying to survive."

The Shadow Knight Commander slowly stood, removing his iron helm and setting it on the floor. The face beneath revealed no human features; it was a pure shadow carving paired with a pair of dim, glowing blue eyes. He stared down at his own palms with a distant, searching gaze.

"Your Majesty..." the Commander whispered softly, his voice trembling slightly. "Just now... when those intruders broke through, and one of their swords nearly pierced my chest guard... for the very first time in my existence, I felt something unfamiliar."

Valor lifted his head, locking eyes with the Commander. "Felt what?"

"Fear," the Commander answered honestly, his voice catching in his throat. "For thousands of cycles, when I died at the hands of players, I felt nothing. Sword strokes, spear thrusts, magic explosions—they were all just numbers chipping away at an HP bar on a system screen. But just now... before Your Majesty saved me, there was a freezing chill piercing the core of my chest. I was afraid... terrified that I would shatter and never see tomorrow again."

The Gatekeeper, sitting cross-legged beside the Commander so heavily that the stone floor groaned beneath him, lowered his massive head.

"I felt it too, Commander," the Gatekeeper rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. "Back then, I thought my life's purpose was just to act as a punching bag for those humans. I was programmed to stand at the gate, take the hits, and shatter. But ever since Your Majesty awakened us with this consciousness... that pain felt so terribly real. And strangely... that fear was accompanied by something else."

Valor raised an eyebrow at the Gatekeeper. "Something else? What is that?"

"Warmth," the Gatekeeper replied, looking up as his single, giant eye shone with a crystal-clear blue light. "When Your Majesty stood before us, refusing to bow to the outside world's rules and risking everything to protect us... for the first time, I felt like I had a home. I felt like this life... actually had meaning, instead of just being a statistical metric."

Hearing those words, a deep rumble echoed within Valor's chest. The digital heart behind his ribs pounded fiercely, radiating a wave of warmth he had never experienced from any line of programming code before. He hadn't expected his small decision to rebel against destiny to forge a bond so profound among them.

Valor stood slowly, stepping forward to approach his subordinates. He stretched out his hands, resting them simultaneously upon the Shadow Knight Commander's armored shoulder and the Gatekeeper's massive arm.

"Did you hear that?" Valor declared firmly, his voice echoing with commanding authority through the vast hall. "The humans out there call us bugs, broken entities that need to be scrubbed from the system. They think we are toys they can break for amusement and material gain."

Valor drew a deep breath, his eyes burning sharp with unyielding resolve.

"But today, in this place, I swear it before you," Valor continued in a booming voice. "We will no longer bow to a cycle of fate that treats us like trash! We are no longer shadows living in fear. If they want to take this home, if they want to destroy what we have built... then we will show the outside world that even monsters have the right to fight back and survive!"

The Shadow Knight Commander clenched his fists tight, his eyes blazing bright. "We swear our absolute loyalty to our last breath, Your Majesty! Not a single player will pass through this castle gate alive!"

"I'll crush anyone bold enough to set foot in here!" the Gatekeeper bellowed, slamming a fist against his own chest so hard the metallic clang echoed across every corner of the room.

The atmosphere in the hall surged with a burning spirit of brotherhood. For a brief moment, amidst a cold virtual world plagued by corporate exploitation, three digital beings had discovered the true meaning of family and freedom.

Yet that emotional peace was not meant to last.

ZRRRT—BZZZTT!

Unceremoniously, the magical wall torches flickered wildly, shifting from a warm glow into a blinding, blood-red glare. The room's temperature plummeted drastically in less than a second.

WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!

This was no ordinary alarm. A piercingly loud electronic drone—the game's global announcement system—screeched violently through the stone walls of Obsidian Castle, seeping inward and deafening anyone who heard it. The sheer scale of the noise caused the crystals on the castle ceiling to vibrate furiously and shatter into dust.

The Shadow Knight Commander sprang up, instantly drawing his blade. "What sound is that?! Where is that alarm coming from?"

"That... that's not a local castle security alarm," the Gatekeeper said in a panicked tone, pointing toward a status console screen in the corner of the room that had suddenly lit up bright red.

Valor remained silent. He tilted his head back to gaze at the stone ceiling, as if his vision could pierce through concrete and soil to witness what was unfolding in the digital cosmos above. His draconian instincts screamed a fierce warning of absolute peril hurtling straight toward them.

In the corner of the room, the castle's internal minimap screen flashed erratically, spawning thousands of new red dots—vastly larger, denser, and moving at high speed from every corner of Chronos Online's global map.

A giant global announcement text window suddenly materialized, floating mid-air dead center in the hall, glaringly clear before Valor and his subordinates. Blazing gold lettering stamped across its face:

“GLOBAL EVENT ALERT: THE ULTIMATE SIEGE HAS COMMENCED. ALL SERVERS CONNECTED. TARGET: OBLITERATION OF OBSIDIAN CASTLE.”

The crimson warning saturated every corner of the stronghold, signaling that the game corporation had officially opened the gates of true hell. Millions of players from every corner of the globe were now moving in unison, armed with top-tier gear and limitless ambition, dispatched directly to burn the Dragon King's final bastion to ash.

The Shadow Knight Commander swallowed hard, staring up at the global announcement screen with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Your Majesty... all the servers across the world... they've all been bridged right here."

The Gatekeeper gripped his weapon until it groaned, his teeth grinding against a surge of white-hot anger and tension. "Their numbers... are immeasurable. It feels like the entire digital underworld is marching straight toward us."

Valor lowered his gaze slowly. Instead of a flicker of panic or fear, the corners of the Dragon King's mouth lifted into a sharp, cold, deadly smirk. His eyes burned bright within the dark hall.

"Good," Valor whispered quietly yet dripping with authority, unsheathing his cosmic blade from his hip until the energy hummed viciously. "If they want to send the entire world to crush us... then we'll make sure Obsidian Castle becomes a mass grave for their ambitions."
