The Hidden Artery

27. Operation Infiltrate the Bureaucracy

The atmosphere inside the underground station hideout abruptly transformed into an emergency military briefing room. Across the long wooden table illuminated by a single dim hanging lamp, a telephone-book-thick architectural blueprint lay unfurled. The tracing paper mapped out the ten-story white government building, covered in red marker scribbles, marginal notes, and tactical coordinate lines hand-drawn by Captain Danu.

Zulfa stood on the left side of the table, crossing his arms over his chest as he glared down at the layout. On his right, Naya busily jotted down key points in her small pocket notebook, while Captain Danu held a mechanical pencil acting as his pointer.

"Alright, let's review the plan one more time," Captain Danu said in his firm baritone, cutting through the hideout's silence. He tapped the tip of his pencil against a box marking the fifth-floor layout on the blueprint. "The National Bureaucracy Central Archive Building is no ordinary government office. This place is the highest administrative citadel in the nation, guarded by the Bureaucracy Internal Security Force (BISF), notorious for being ruthless and entirely incorruptible."

Naya raised a hand, looking at Danu with furrowed brows. "Captain, according to the notes in Zulfa's father's documents, the physical safe housing The Foundation Council member roster is located in the dedicated archive room on the top floor, right?"

"Precisely, Naya," Danu answered with a nod. "That room is on the fifth floor, inside the Chief Administrative Director's private office. The catch is that floor operates on an independent self-isolation circuit. The moment an alarm trips, every steel door and bulletproof glass panel on that level locks down automatically from a remote mainframe."

Zulfa leaned forward, tracing the service piping and ventilation shafts drawn thinly beneath the ground floor on the blueprint. "We obviously can't walk in through the front doors. My current status is omega-level omega fugitive. My face is plastered across every corporate scanner in the city. If I step foot in the main lobby, the building alarms will scream in under ten seconds."

"Correct, Zulfa. That's why our division of labor needs to be razor-sharp," Naya chimed in, locking eyes with Zulfa before turning to Danu. "Captain Danu, what's your role in this op?"

Danu smiled faintly, resting his mechanical pencil on the table. "My job is to secure a diversion route and an extraction vehicle on the building's east side, right along the underground waste disposal line. I'll also monitor internal security radio frequencies to give you a heads-up if enemy units make any sudden moves."

"And what about the two of us?" Zulfa asked, gesturing between himself and Naya. "How are we supposed to bypass the fifth-floor biometric security when my face has been blacklisted by the system?"

Naya smiled with quiet confidence, reaching into her backpack to pull out a small device—a modified circuit-box wired with dangling jumper cables.

"I've already taken care of that, Engineer. Over the last two hours, I rigged this portable biometric signal-spoofing device. We can temporarily blind local security cameras using a short-circuit frequency pulse."

Zulfa nodded, acknowledging Naya's exceptional technical prowess. "That'll buy us a few minutes to move down the corridor. But the main problem isn't just the security cameras, Naya."

Silence fell back over the briefing table. Captain Danu let out a heavy breath, pulling his elbows flat against the table, then locked eyes with Zulfa and Naya in turn with an intensely grave expression.

"Zulfa's right," Danu said, lowering his voice into a sharp warning. "You can fool the cameras, you can pick locks with Naya's electronic gear... but you will never make it past the fifth-floor main gates without a physical authorization key."

Naya frowned in confusion. "A physical authorization key? You mean a magnetic access badge?"

"Not just an access badge," Danu stressed. "The central bureaucracy building uses a military-grade biometric security system engineered directly by Aethel Corp technology. The archive vault door on the fifth floor can only be cleared using a live fingerprint or a direct retina scan belonging to corporate directors or high-ranking bureaucratic officials."

Naya's eyes widened in shock. "A retina scan or fingerprint from high-ranking officials?! Captain, we're fugitives! There's no way we can just ask a corporate director to open the door for us!"

"That's the only security blind spot left," Danu said calmly yet sharply. "Tomorrow at noon, precisely twelve o'clock, an emergency summit of the bureaucracy board of directors and Aethel Corp brass is being held in that building to discuss system recovery post-quake. One of the officials holding full access clearance to the fifth-floor vault is the Deputy Chief Bureaucracy Minister—the man whose signature sits right on the document covering up your father's murder."

Zulfa clenched his fist against the table. His gaze hardened, a flash of fury and resolve merging deep within his pupils. "The Deputy Chief Bureaucracy Minister... the man complicit in my father's death."

"Exactly," Danu continued. "The plan is for you to infiltrate the building's basement parking garage amid the arriving delegate rush, disguise yourselves as catering logistics staff, and slip into the private elevator reserved for directors."

Naya drew a long breath, weighing the immense risks of the reckless plan. "Disguising ourselves among high-ranking officials, then stealing a fingerprint access or scanning an official's retina while their guard is down... That's essentially walking straight into a tiger's den barehanded."

"We carry a weapon far stronger than bullets, Naya," Zulfa said softly yet firmly, locking eyes with her with unwavering conviction. "We carry the truth. And we carry the resolve to finish what my father started."

Naya stared intently at Zulfa. Witnessing the unyielding steel etched across the youth's face, the hesitation in her chest slowly melted away, replaced by a matching courage. The girl gave a firm nod. "Fine. If we die in that bureaucracy building, at least we die trying to rip the masks off those corporate bastards."

Captain Danu smiled proudly, clapping Zulfa and Naya on the shoulders in turn. "That's the spirit we need. Get some good rest tonight. Tomorrow morning, precisely at ten o'clock, the infiltration operation begins."

Would Zulfa and Naya successfully infiltrate the central bureaucracy building and secure that vital access without tripping corporate security?
