The Hidden Artery

47. Training in the Shadow Sector

The atmosphere inside the Shadow Sector—a secluded training ground tucked behind the crystal walls of the Arkian cavern—felt heavy with suffocating pressure. The air was saturated with purplish-blue cosmic wave energy particles radiating a soft glow, drifting like luminous dust motes caught in sunlight.

Zulfa sat cross-legged atop a jet-black obsidian stone altar at the center of the room. Both of his palms faced upward, absorbing the flood of pure Aether-Tech energy channeled through the crystal pillars ringing the chamber. Though the energy-suppressing manacles from the Aethel Corp prison had been stripped away yesterday, lingering radiation toxins and chronic exhaustion still gnawed at his muscles and joints. This adaptation ritual was the sole path for his physical frame to withstand the crushing burden of the cosmic reactor wave during the upcoming decisive battle.

"Hold your focus, Engineer Arditama," Kaelen’s voice echoed from the edge of the altar, overseeing the process with hawk-like precision. "Do not let your mind wander. Aether energy responds to your emotions. If you panic, the mana flow will tear your muscle fibers apart from the inside."

Zulfa clenched his jaw. Sweat poured in sheets down his brow and neck, while his entire body felt scorched by a freezing, high-voltage electrical current. Every breath he drew felt agonizingly heavy, as though he were inhaling crushed ice mixed with fire.

Not far from where Zulfa meditated, Naya sat alongside the historians of the Arkian race. Before them, an ancient stone projection table displayed primordial digital manuscript scrolls detailing the city's original tunnel network history. Naya was busy jotting down security passcodes and enemy reactor structural weaknesses in her small notebook.

Catching sight of the pain etched across Zulfa's face from afar, Naya halted her writing. She stood up and walked over to the stone altar where Zulfa trained.

"Kaelen, does this adaptation process really have to hurt this much?" Naya asked anxiously, fixing Kaelen with an imploring gaze begging for a momentary recess.

Kaelen glanced at Naya briefly, answering flatly, "The strength to defy destiny is never born from comfort, Madam Assistant. If his body fails to accustom itself to the high-density pressure of Aether, he will be pulverized instantly the moment he stands face-to-face with The Foundation Council's core reactor on the surface."

Naya let out a long breath, feeling utterly helpless. She stepped closer to the edge of the stone altar, dropping to her knees right beside Zulfa as he battled the cosmic energy surge.

"Zul..." Naya whispered softly, extending a hand to brush gently against the youth's shoulder. "Don't push yourself too hard if it's becoming unbearable. You can take a short break."

Zulfa slowly opened his eyes. His pupils flashed a faint golden luminescence before reverting to normal. He looked at Naya, offering a thin smile through his ragged breath.

"I... I'm fine, Naya," Zulfa rasped, struggling to straighten his spine. "It hurts, yes, but every second the energy flows in, my muscles feel significantly stronger than before. We don't have time to slack off."

Naya smiled faintly, her gaze reflecting a deep mix of awe and profound concern. She pulled a clean, damp cloth from her bag, and with tender care, wiped the sweat dampening Zulfa's brow.

"You're always so stubborn," Naya murmured softly, half-teasing yet laced with warmth. "But... listen to me, Engineer Arditama. You have to promise me one thing."

Zulfa stared deeply into Naya's eyes. "What promise?"

"After all this madness ends... after The Foundation Council is crushed, the reactor is sealed, and your family's honor is fully restored..." Naya paused for a breath, clutching the edge of the cloth in her hand. "We're getting out of this city. We're taking a vacation to somewhere quiet, watching the sunset without being hunted by soldiers or hiding out in underground caves."

Zulfa froze for a second. The image of a peaceful future—something long since deleted from his vocabulary since his father's death—suddenly felt so vivid and beautiful when spoken aloud by Naya.

A genuine, deeply warm smile curved Zulfa's lips. He raised a hand still trembling from residual energy, gently wrapping his fingers around Naya's hand resting beside his shoulder.

"I promise, Naya," Zulfa stated firmly, looking at her with absolute sincerity. "Once this is all over, wherever you want to go... I'll go with you."

Naya broke into a wide smile, tears of relief threatening to spill over her eyelids. The atmosphere between them amidst the brutal training suddenly felt deeply peaceful and intimate, momentarily casting aside the deadly threat waiting for them on the surface world.

Yet that peace was not built to last.

Suddenly—

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

A piercing, high-pitched emergency alarm blared shrilly across every corner of the Arkian crystal cavern. The soft purplish-blue luminescence illuminating the cavern ceiling abruptly shifted to a glaring, blood-red hue, strobing wildly in absolute unison.

Kaelen, standing quietly at the altar's edge, snapped his eyes wide. He bounded forward, locking his gaze onto the main network monitoring console flashing red emergency signals in the corner of the room.

"What is it, Kaelen?!" Zulfa blurted out instinctively, cutting short his meditation and springing up from the stone altar alongside Naya.

Kaelen's face hardened into chiseled stone, his optical glare burning with unleashed fury. He whipped his head around to stare at Zulfa and Captain Danu, who had just sprinted over from the outer corridor.

"Our external defense grid just detected an anomalous data transmission!" Kaelen roared, his voice shaking with blistering rage. "There's a traitor among your group who secretly beamed our secret GPS hideout coordinates straight to the surface!"
