The Hidden Artery
51. Investigation in the Ruins
Thick white dust billowed across the Arkian main research chamber, which had now transformed into a sprawling sea of shattered crystal rubble. The purplish-blue glow from the cavern ceiling dimmed, leaving only grim, strobing red emergency lights flickering in every corner. Grief hung heavily in the air; Arkian citizens worked side by side to clear the debris, while stifled sobs and quiet weeping drifted from the corners of the corridors among those who had lost their homes to the traitor Aris's explosion.
Zulfa knelt upon a bed of razor-sharp crystal shards, his hands carefully tracing the remnants of the main pillar's destroyed foundation. He picked up a fragment of explosive military-grade metal casing left behind by Aethel Corp, still smelling faintly of lingering sulfur.
Naya stepped closer, holding a mini flashlight to illuminate Zulfa's workspace. The girl's face looked exhausted, yet her gaze carried fierce resolve.
"What's the damage structure analysis, Zul?" Naya asked quietly, striving to keep her voice from trembling amid the freezing cavern chill. "Was that blast purely designed to shatter the pillar at random?"
Zulfa shook his head slowly. He rose to his feet while dusting off his palms, then fixed a piercing gaze upon the three-dimensional digital blueprint projected above the emergency console table.
"No, Naya. This wasn't a random accident, and it's not just a standard act of sabotage," Zulfa answered in a heavy, deeply convicted tone. "If you look at the placement points of the explosives along the pillar's base, the angle of inclination is hyper-precise. It sits right on the deepest gravity fulcrum connecting directly to the corporation's subterranean dimensional energy conversion pipelines."
Captain Danu and Kaelen, deep in discussion near the console table, cut off their conversation and pivoted in unison toward Zulfa.
"You mean the collapse of this pillar was intentional?" Danu narrowed his eyes.
"Extremely deliberate," Zulfa affirmed, pointing to the red lines on the console's holographic projection. "The Foundation Council syndicate knew full well they'd struggle to breach the Arkian defenses head-on. So, rather than attacking from the outside, they let that traitor plant explosives to force open a dimensional breach from within the earth's belly."
Kaelen clenched his metallic fist until it ground loudly. His jaw locked against a raging fury. "Cowardly scum... they're sacrificing the very stability of our earth just to accelerate their energy harvesting process."
"Spot on, Kaelen," Zulfa continued. "And if we let it happen, this first pillar's collapse will trigger a domino effect dropping the rest of the tunnels in under twenty-four hours. We don't have much time left."
Naya crossed her arms over her chest, staring anxiously at the projection screen. "Then what's our next move? The primary entrance from the colonial tunnel is blocked solid by the micro-quake's surface collapse."
Silence blanketed the area around the console table. Tension gripped the small group. They were trapped deep in the earth's belly, their evacuation routes severed, with the enemy's Total Purge execution ticking closer to its final seconds.
Kaelen let out a long breath, gazing back and forth between Zulfa and Captain Danu with a softened expression reflecting profound respect for the raw sincerity of the surface humans' struggle.
"You are right. We cannot sit idle waiting for destruction," Kaelen stated firmly. He spun around, walking over to an ancient stone safe nestled in the corner of the main hall that had miraculously survived the cave-in.
Pressing a sequence of ancient carved mechanisms into the stone wall, the safe door slid open slowly, releasing a distinct aroma of aged parchment. Kaelen reached deep into the cavity and withdrew a star-etched metal cylinder scroll.
Walking back to the console table, Kaelen unrolled an ancient map crafted from treated hide right before Zulfa.
Zulfa and Naya leaned in, staring at the map in wonder. It wasn't a digital or standard paper map, but an ancient vertical navigation sheet detailing the intricate pathways of dead magma chambers and secret vertical lifts engineered by the Arkian ancestors.
"What is this...?" Naya murmured in awe, tracking the route lines plunging straight down to the base of the corporate tower's foundation.
Kaelen pointed his fingertip at a vertical red line etched straight down the center of the map.
"This is the Arkian Vertical Navigation Map—a secret path carved by the seal wardens of old that penetrates straight into The Foundation Council's core reactor heart from the absolute underside," Kaelen revealed gravely, locking eyes straight into Zulfa's pupils. "This route has never been logged in any modern server, and nobody on the surface knows it exists."
Zulfa stared at the ancient map, then raised his head to meet Kaelen's gaze with a reignited smile of unwavering confidence.
"Then," Zulfa stated firmly, lifting the map scroll from Kaelen's hand, "this is our only way to end all of this."
