The Hidden Artery

60. A New Page in a Breathing City

Dawn broke gracefully over the ruins of the central city district, washing away the remnants of the dark shadows that had choked its citizens' lives for years. The morning air felt crisp, as though the city were finally drawing a deep, long breath after being confined within a lethal artificial system.

At an open-air observation deck along the edge of the ruined Aethel Corp tower, Zulfa Arditama stood tall alongside Naya and Captain Danu. A gentle morning breeze ruffled their jackets. Before them, massive public holographic displays that once broadcasted Vian Pratama's rotten propaganda now streamed the headline that changed everything: the posthumous exoneration of the Arditama family, accompanied by the release of thousands of classified corporate documents across the global public network.

"Look at that, Zul," Naya whispered softly, pointing a warm smile toward the giant public screen across the street. "Your father's name... your family's name... they've been completely cleared. The whole world knows the truth behind those savage corporate experiments now."

Zulfa stared up at the screen with moist eyes. A profound sense of relief washed over his heart, lifting the crushing weight that had long oppressed his chest. He raised his right hand, touching the chest pocket where his father's cassette tape and memory chip were safely stowed.

"Dad... we did it," Zulfa murmured quietly to the morning breeze. "The truth is finally out."

Captain Danu stepped closer, tossing a casual arm around Zulfa's shoulder with the familiar gesture of a commander to his finest soldier. He let out a small chuckle, his baritone breaking the reflective quiet of the morning.

"Well, it feels weird not having to run or hide from special forces every time the sun comes up," Danu said, flicking a lighter to spark a cigarette as he tracked the bright city skyline. "So, Engineer Arditama, what's a city hero's grand plan after this? Early retirement and an honest life as a municipal town planner?"

Zulfa turned toward Danu, offering a thin smile. "Retire? Not yet, Captain. The city might have survived total destruction, but there's still plenty of shattered infrastructure and social bedrock left to rebuild from scratch. We have to make sure this city stands on honest foundations, not lies."

Naya gazed at Zulfa with eyes sparkling with admiration. "And I'm ready to audit every single new bureaucracy of yours, Engineer. Just make sure my office isn't back underground, alright?"

Light, warm laughter instantly melted the lingering tension between the trio.

Yet that laughter slowly faded when Kaelen and several representatives of the Arkian kin approached them from the direction of the underground tunnel ruins. Clad in worn robes layered with ancient armor plates, the primordial faction leader halted right before Zulfa.

Zulfa, Naya, and Captain Danu straightened instantly, offering a respectful salute to the warden of the seal.

"The morning sun up here... feels much warmer than what we're used to down in the crystal cavern," Kaelen spoke with a calm, rumbling voice, casting a brief glance at the city skyline before returning his gaze to Zulfa. "The primary dimensional seal is bolted shut thanks to your help. The Arkian kind will return to the belly of the earth, tending to the remaining foundation pillars of our world."

Zulfa nodded respectfully. "Thank you for everything, Kaelen. Without your help and Aether-Tech, we never could have stopped The Foundation Council's insane plan."

"Don't thank me just yet, Engineer," Kaelen replied, a faint smile touching his half-mechanical face. "We are merely guardians of the past. The city's future now rests entirely in your hands—you breathing humans who walk upon the soil."

Kaelen bowed his head slightly in a final gesture of respect, then turned to lead the Arkian warriors as they retreated slowly back into the darkness of the subterranean tunnel. Gradually, the tunnel entrance sealed shut beneath tumbling natural stone, leaving absolute peace on the surface.

Moments later, as Captain Danu bid his farewells to check on the remaining resistance squads in the northern district, Zulfa and Naya chose to walk side-by-side down a city park path beginning to fill with citizens cheering wildly in celebration of their newfound freedom.

"The air today really feels different, doesn't it, Zul?" Naya said cheerfully, stretching her arms wide to catch the cool morning breeze. She turned to Zulfa with a sweet smile. "Remember our promise back in the training room? About going somewhere quiet to watch the sunset without being hunted by enemies?"

Zulfa stopped walking, staring intently at Naya with a gaze full of genuine warmth. He tucked both hands into his jacket pockets, breaking into a broad smile.

"I never forgot, Madam Assistant," Zulfa answered softly. "Today, this city is ours. Wherever you want to go after this... I'm ready to take you."

Naya blushed, her cheeks flushing rosy beneath the morning sun. She reached out, looping her arm tightly through Zulfa's as they resumed their stroll down the breathing city streets.

Yet amid that moment of perfect peace and happiness, the tranquility was abruptly shattered by a subtle disturbance in Naya's coat pocket.

Beep... beep... beep...

The portable emergency signal scanner they had salvaged in the ruins suddenly flickered to life on its own, emitting a delicate vibration flashing a rapid green light.

Naya halted, furrowing her brow in confusion. She dug into her coat pocket and pulled out the device. "Huh? Why is this thing activating again? I thought Aethel Corp's satellite transmission network was completely destroyed?"

Zulfa stopped as well. The smile on his face slowly faded, replaced by a razor-sharp, wary glare. He stepped closer to Naya, locking his eyes on the scanner's tiny screen.

Across the display, instead of an error signal or dead data, lines of random passcodes scrolled at breakneck speed. Line by line, the text forged a brand-new data transmission beaming powerfully from outer space, punching straight down through the earth's atmosphere in secret.

Zulfa reached out and plucked the device from Naya's hand, reading the foreign encrypted strings scrolling across the screen with a bated breath.

UNKNOWN SATELLITE EXTERNAL TRANSMISSION: FREQUENCY 99.4 - SECTOR 01 MAIN REACTOR RELAY SEVERED. DIVERTING SHOCK PROTOCOL TO GALACTIC MAINNET... NOTE: THE FOUNDATION COUNCIL WAS MERELY A JUNIOR BRANCH OF THE TRUE DIRECTORATE BEYOND THE STARS.

A single concluding sentence blared brightly across the tiny screen, as though mocking their morning relief:

"WELCOME TO TIER TWO, EARTH."

Zulfa blew his eyes wide, his blood running ice-cold in an instant. He raised his head slowly, gazing up at the clear blue morning sky above the city—realizing with chilling certainty that what they had smashed on earth yesterday was not the root of the true threat at all, but merely the opening salvo of a far vaster, more perilous cosmic conspiracy.

The screen slowly faded to black.
