The Hidden Artery
63. The Pulsing Mystic Arteries
Colonel Hendra’s warning regarding the giant ritual temple atop the city's highest tower hung heavily in the cold morning air. The confidential corporate document bearing the red seal now rested safely inside Zulfa’s tactical pack. After parting ways with the defecting officer—who had to resume his disguise to evade the bounty hunters—Zulfa, Naya, and Captain Danu moved swiftly to slip into the underground utility network beneath the central commercial district.
Stepping down the final concrete staircase into the primary tunnel, they found the subterranean environment radically altered from what they remembered.
"Good grief... what is that smell?" Captain Danu grunted, partially covering his nose with his jacket collar as he swept his flashlight before them.
The air inside the underground utility tunnel felt scorching hot, suffocating, and reeked of dense sulfur. Yet the odor wasn't the most alarming change.
The massive cast-iron water pipes and thick electrical cable bundles that once stretched rigidly along the concrete walls had fundamentally warped. Those pipes now pulsed rhythmically, swelling and contracting like a living creature's blood vessels, while the electric currents inside the cables morphed into hissing lines of bright purple light spitting wild sparks.
Naya pressed her back against Zulfa, her eyes wide with horror as she stared at the bizarrely glowing tunnel walls. "Zul... those water pipes and electrical lines... they look alive! The dimensional anomaly from the surface is actually seeping down through the earth's cavities."
Zulfa knelt beside a rapidly pulsing pipe. Pulling a portable digital scanner from his pack, he pressed its sensor leads directly against the metal surface.
Bzzzt—click!
The scanner screen flared to life, generating a wildly erratic red wave graph. Zulfa narrowed his eyes, reading the shifting data values with the expertise of an experienced municipal engineer.
"You're right, Naya," Zulfa said with a tense voice, studying the scanner display. "The cosmic energy seepage from above has infected the city's entire mechanical infrastructure. These water pipes and power lines have mutated into mystic arteries—wild energy distribution conduits pumping dimensional radiation across every corner of the city and slowly eating away at the foundational structures above."
"If these mystic arteries keep pulsing unchecked, what happens to the city's structure, Engineer?" Captain Danu asked, keeping his rifle raised as he watched the dark, distant tunnel mouth.
"In under two days, the pressure from this cosmic flow will trigger chain explosions across every utility substation," Zulfa answered firmly, rising as he pocketed his gear. "The commercial district above us will collapse, swallowed into the earth's cavities as the structural foundation rots away."
Naya stepped closer to Zulfa, clutching his arm anxiously. "Then what can we do, Zul? We can't tear out miles of city piping all by ourselves."
"We don't need to tear them out," Zulfa replied resolutely. "We just need to seal and stabilize the primary artery valve at this tunnel intersection. I brought the Aether-Tech modification kit given to us by the Arkians yesterday. This tool can realign mechanical frequencies with mana waves."
Zulfa pointed toward the tunnel junction ahead, where an ancient carved gear-shaped giant flow regulator valve clung to the concrete wall, surrounded by hissing wisps of purple energy smoke.
"There's the first artery valve," Zulfa said. "Let's finish this before the radiation gets any thicker."
The three of them approached the mystic artery valve. The closer they drew, the more punishingly hot the ambient temperature became. The dimensional anomaly radiation radiated an immense physical pressure, squeezing their chests and pounding their heads with throbbing pain.
Zulfa drew a deep breath, pushing past the pain stabbing his temples. He pulled the Aether-Tech transmitter from his pack, linking its silver adapter cable to the wildly pulsing valve terminal.
"Zul, are you alright? Your face is completely pale," Naya asked worriedly, steadying Zulfa as cold sweat slicked his brow.
"I... I'm fine, Naya," Zulfa rasped, battling the dizziness slamming his brain. "The radiation pressure is fierce, but I have to punch in the manual sync code right now before this valve blows."
"Do it, Zul! We've got your six!" Captain Danu called out, scanning the corridor turns.
Zulfa began typing a sequence of synchronization commands onto the portable Aether-Tech pad. His hands trembled violently beneath the crushing physical weight of the anomaly radiation piercing his nerve endings. Each keystroke triggered a rebounding shockwave of purple energy that stung his fingers, spitting tiny sparks.
"Hold on... almost there..." Zulfa muttered in deep concentration, gritting his teeth against the excruciating pain tearing through his frame.
Suddenly, right as Zulfa hammered the final execution key to lock down the artery valve—
BZZZT—WHOOSH!
The mystic artery valve refused to seal shut. Instead, the valve machinery emitted a piercing, deafening high-frequency hum, casting a blinding flash of purple light that flooded the entire tunnel chamber.
Naya and Captain Danu gasped, shielding their eyes from the glare.
"What's happening?! The valve's rejecting the lock!" Naya screamed.
Zulfa was hurled backward by the rebounding energy shockwave. Yet that wasn't what froze him in his tracks.
Before them, rising from the center of the purple glow radiating from the artery valve, a massive holographic shadow projection of the past suddenly materialized, floating in mid-air.
The projection displayed an ancient scientist robed in old-world vestments standing before a blueprint of the exact same machine, ringed by a churning vortex of cosmic energy.
Naya blew her eyes wide, staring at the holographic specter with bated breath. "What projection is that...? Why is this old valve recording a shadow from the past?"
Zulfa rose slowly, fixing a sharp gaze upon the scientist in the projection. Though his face remained obscured by the glare, the audio frequency of the shadow's voice echoed clearly off the tunnel walls, delivering an ancient warning directed straight at the bloodline touching the valve:
"Hear my voice, bearer of the key..." the holographic echo rumbled heavily across the subterranean passage. "This artery valve is bound tightly to the curse of the First Architect. Every time you close a wound on this city's body, know this... the door up above swings wider still for the lord of darkness."
Silence descended over the utility tunnel, cold and absolute. The shadow projection faded gradually away, leaving a subtle hum behind as the artery valve finally clicked shut into a soothing blue luminescence.
Zulfa stood frozen, cold sweat slicking his frame. That warning regarding the "First Architect" left a massive question mark churning in his mind, while reminding them all too clearly that the battle against the dimensional anomaly held ancestral secrets far darker than they had ever imagined.
