The Hidden Artery

64. Guerrilla Operations Begin

The atmosphere inside the group's makeshift underground hideout—a municipal archive basement converted into a makeshift command center—brimmed with a tense, frantic energy. Across the long wooden table, several portable monitors cast a dim glow, mapping out city topography choked with red hazard warning markers from the military quarantine zones.

Zulfa stood tall before the console table, assembling the final components of a new hybrid rifle merging modern ballistic tech with an Aether-Tech crystal core. Beside him, Captain Danu distributed tactical vests and specialized ammunition to resistance cell members newly arrived from various districts.

"Listen up, everyone," Captain Danu's voice boomed commandingly, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. "The situation outside has morphed into asymmetric warfare. The corporate military holds the surface streets, while mystic arteries gnaw at our subterranean foundations. We can no longer fight them out in the open as a single massed force. Starting today, we fragment into distributed guerrilla resistance cells."

Naya stepped up to the map table, staring down at the upper sector monitor with a solemn expression. "The Captain is right. Our core mission is split into two equally vital fronts: the Underground Team led by Zulfa will track and stabilize mystic artery valves before the city's utility network collapses entirely, while the Surface Team I'll lead with the infiltration unit will smuggle classified documents into civilian safe houses inside the quarantine zone."

Zulfa paused his weapon assembly. He turned, fixing Naya with a gaze heavy with deep anxiety. The youth walked over to her, laying his soldering iron down on the table.

"Naya, are you sure you want to lead the strike team straight into the upper quarantine zone?" Zulfa asked in a softened tone laden with worry. "The surface district right now is crawling with strict military checkpoints and Foundation Council mercenary patrols. The risk of getting caught up there is exponentially higher."

Naya offered a thin smile, tilting her chin up with a confident gesture despite the exhaustion etched in her eyes. "Hey, Engineer Arditama, don't forget who hacked the corporate bureaucracy servers at the very start of all this madness. I can handle myself, plus we have to split our focus if we want their plan to completely crash and burn."

Zulfa drew a long breath, recognizing he couldn't talk the girl out of her decision. He reached out, clasping Naya's hands tight amid the chaotic bustle of the hideout.

"Alright... but promise me one thing," Zulfa said softly, locking eyes with her. "Whatever happens up in the upper sector, prioritize your safety. Don't take stupid risks. The second I finish closing the artery valves down here, I'm coming right up to the quarantine zone to find you."

Naya returned the squeeze, nodding firmly with a reassuring, warm smile. "I promise, Zul. Finish your job down below fast, and make sure you aren't all busted up when we meet later."

The emotional, fleeting moment of parting was cut short when Captain Danu cleared his throat softly, patting Zulfa's shoulder to remind them of their tight prep window.

"We don't have much time, kids. All hybrid weapon units are prepped and cleared for distribution," Danu said grimly. "Let's take our positions."

Amid the final gear checks, the room's atmosphere abruptly froze.

Bzzzt—Click!

A guerrilla radar surveillance scanner resting on the corner of the console table suddenly spat out a low-frequency emergency alarm. The tiny indicator light on the radar display shifted from green to a flashing red strobe, accompanied by a cluster of new red blips racing toward the hideout's perimeter.

Naya gasped, stepping back toward the main monitor table. "Zul, Danu... there's anomaly movement outside the gate perimeter!"

Zulfa bolted to the radar screen, his fingers hitting the map resolution zoom button. "Good grief... those red blips aren't civilians or regular military patrols."

Across the monitor, the trajectory of the red dots moved at blistering speed, bypassing concrete partition walls to slash straight down the secret tunnel path leading to their hideout entrance.

Captain Danu racked his rifle roughly, his jaw locking. "Is it armored mercenary squads?"

"No!" Zulfa yelled with a strained voice, reading the spectral radiation data flashing across the screen. "Their thermal signatures and energy frequencies... that's elite enemy special forces—dimensional mutant soldiers!"

Naya blew her eyes wide in horror. "How is that possible?! How did they track this hideout's coordinates this fast?!"

"They aren't tracking coordinates via radio signals," Zulfa answered swiftly, grabbing his hybrid rifle off the table. "They're tracking energy pulses from our own scanner gear. They're hunting our resistance cells down one by one systematically!"

Boom!

Before they could mount a further defensive move, a brutal impact slammed into the underground hideout's iron security gate. The metallic shriek of steel yielding to monstrous force rang loud, followed by the hissing scritch of mutant entities clawing at the outer walls from every angle.
