The Hidden Artery
67. Stabilization of the Second Valve
The echoing sound of dripping water in the subterranean chamber felt deeply unnatural, blending with a low-frequency hum that set the teeth on edge. Zulfa and three members of the underground guerrilla team navigated the dark concrete corridor toward the city's primary water treatment plant sector. The air there felt crushing, thick with a pale purple mist that rubbed raw against stray water vapor particles.
"Engineer, check the spectral reading on my display. The anomaly density inside this plant exceeds normal limits by three hundred percent," whispered Roni, a guerrilla scout, sweeping his tactical flashlight toward the factory's steel security gate, half its structure heavily distorted.
Zulfa halted, staring down at the portable scanner screen blinking wildly in his grip. "We've entered the heart of a high-density supernatural anomaly zone. Space in here may no longer follow normal physics, so make sure nobody wanders off the main pipe track."
The moment they shoved open the rusted steel security gate, the scene inside the water treatment plant choked the breath right out of their lungs. The colossal chamber—once packed with modern water purification tanks—now looked horrifyingly warped. Portions of the concrete floor floated unmoored in mid-air defying gravity, while giant water pipes coiled into bizarre spirals tunneling through the ceiling straight into a dark dimension. The water in the lower holding pool no longer ran clear, instead glowing with a deep purple luminescence that hissed with fizzing bubbles of cosmic energy.
"This place has genuinely mutated into a nightmare den," Roni muttered in horror, gripping his rifle barrel tight. "How are we supposed to find the second artery valve in the middle of a spatial distortion like this, Zul?"
"Follow the frequency resonance from this Aether-Tech tracker," Zulfa answered firmly, pointing to the needle on his modification device vibrating with steady momentum. "The second artery valve sits right beneath the main centrifugal turbine platform across the way. Let's move fast before the anomaly density spikes any higher."
They set out across a vibrating iron pipe bridge. Each step triggered strange optical afterimages at the edge of their vision, creating the illusion that the factory walls were breathing and tracking their every move. Yet Zulfa ignored all visual distractions. His engineer's brain remained locked on a single objective: reaching the main artery valve and locking it down.
After battling through a labyrinth of twisted piping, they finally reached a circular steel platform in the center of the turbine hall. At the platform's core, a giant bronze-geared valve pulsed violently, ringed by a wild circle of cosmic energy spitting purple sparks in every direction.
"There's the second artery valve," Zulfa called out, pulling the Aether-Tech locking module from his pack. "Roni, Jefri, secure the perimeter. The radiation here is vastly heavier than before; I need a few minutes to align the synchronization codes."
"Understood, Engineer! We've got your six!" Roni responded vigilantly, spinning to turn his back to the platform's outer rim alongside Jefri.
Zulfa knelt before the searing, pulsing valve. He plugged his device's silver adapter cable straight into the valve terminal port, then began typing manual command strings with slightly trembling fingers. The ambient air grew increasingly blistering, and a strange ringing started crawling inside his ears, mimicking alien whispers striving to shatter his focus.
Click... click... zzzzt!
"First sync code logged..." Zulfa muttered in deep concentration, cold sweat slicking his temples. "Just one more step to lock this valve..."
Suddenly, the air all around the steel platform froze solid.
"Zul! Above us!" Jefri screamed hysterically, pointing toward the turbine hall ceiling.
From behind the roiling purple fog and floating pipes, a dimensional guardian entity—a monstrous shadow spirit boasting long arms and razor-sharp crystal claws—materialized abruptly, leaping down to dive-bomb their platform with blinding speed.
"Shoot! Drive them back!" Roni panicked, hauling his rifle up to spit a volley of hybrid plasma fire into the air.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
The gunfire slammed into the guardian entity, sparking bright flashes of light and high-pitched shrieks that shook the factory walls. The creature was driven backward into the air, but two more dropped straight down from behind the dimensional vortex, zeroing in on Zulfa as he fought to finish locking the valve.
"Damn it, they won't stop!" Jefri snarled, continuing to blast at the creatures scrambling fast toward the platform. "Zul, is the valve locked yet?! We're boxed in!"
"Almost! Give me five more seconds!" Zulfa roared, neck veins bulging as he slammed the final execution key on the Aether-Tech panel with his remaining strength.
The device screen flashed brilliant green: SYNCHRONIZATION 100% - SECOND VALVE LOCKED!
Instantly, the bronze valve gear spun hard to the left with a thunderous mechanical crash. The wild purple glow around the valve mutated into a soothing bright blue, and a shockwave of pure energy burst outward, sweeping the surrounding dimensional guardian entities clean away in a heartbeat.
"Got it!" Roni cheered in relief.
Yet that victory lasted mere seconds.
Before Zulfa could stand or retrieve his device, a massively powerful current-reversal shockwave rebounded back from the newly locked valve. The blast slammed squarely into Zulfa's frame, triggering a high-density cosmic radiation spike that ripped his consciousness away in a heartbeat.
"ZULFA!" Roni and Jefri screamed in unison.
Zulfa reached out instinctively for Roni's hand, but his body felt weightless, as though earth's gravity had vanished entirely. The purple energy vortex from the sealing valve suddenly raged to life, sucking in the surrounding air and dragging Zulfa straight into a horrifying parallel dimensional rift, leaving Roni and Jefri frozen in horror atop the empty steel platform.
