The Hidden Artery

69. Rejoining the Resistance Cells

The atmosphere inside the group's makeshift underground hideout—the former archive basement now wired with hybrid comms cables and digital maps—thrummed with electric energy. Portable neon lights cast a stark white glow across the exhausted yet fiercely tense faces of the guerrilla fighters who had just returned from deadly lines of duty.

In the corner, Naya organized a stack of decoded documents intercepted from the hill transmission station. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and faint dark circles shadowed her eyes, yet a warm smile bloomed across her lips the moment familiar footsteps echoed from the tunnel threshold.

Zulfa strode into the room accompanied by Roni, followed closely behind by Captain Danu, who walked with a slight limp while clutching his left ribcage—the lingering souvenir of the mutant commander's psychokinetic blow in the Northern District.

"Zul! Captain Danu!" Naya cried softly, sprinting over to them. She threw her arms around Zulfa instantly, burying her face against his chest. "Thank God... you're safe. I was terrified when the underground sensors picked up a dimensional distortion in your sector."

Zulfa wrapped his arms tightly around Naya, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head in pure relief. He glanced briefly at Captain Danu, who winced slightly as Roni guided him down into a wooden chair.

"I'm fine, Naya," Zulfa murmured softly, breaking the embrace slowly to cup her face and check for any serious injuries. "What about you at the transmission hill? Your radio transmission cut out right as the station system got overridden."

Naya drew a long breath, turning toward the main console table. "It's a long and pretty horrifying story, Zul. But what matters most is that we all survived tonight."

Minutes later, after Captain Danu received emergency medical treatment for his bruised ribs and swallowed a cup of warm water, the three resistance leaders sat in a circle before the primary digital map table. The mood among them turned grave; their operational timeline had shrunk drastically following the time distortion Zulfa experienced at the underground water treatment plant.

"Let's piece our data together," Captain Danu opened with his raspy baritone, looking back and forth between Zulfa and Naya. He tapped a finger against the map table. "In the Northern District, I went head-to-head with the enemy's mutant commander. They're dropping conventional tactics entirely, relying on pure psychokinetic energy to shatter our territorial defense."

"And at the hill transmission station," Naya chimed in fast, opening her tablet to display a holographic face recording she had managed to capture, "I successfully intercepted their main transmission. But more shockingly, the syndicate's supreme leader—the master puppeteer behind The Foundation Council—greeted me directly through the terminal screen and dropped my childhood name. They know precisely who we are."

Zulfa listened intently, setting the Aether-Tech scanner device down in the center of the table to project a 3D hologram of the two mystic artery valves he had successfully stabilized.

"The two underground artery valves in the commercial district and the water plant are locked down," Zulfa explained firmly. "Yet from the dimensional vision I experienced during the second valve seal, I saw this city's future. The grand architect is building a giant ritual altar atop the corporation's highest tower to rip open a permanent dimensional gate and ascend into a new dark god entity."

"A ritual temple on the highest tower..." Captain Danu muttered, narrowing his eyes as he weighed the intel. "That means all the street chaos, military patrols, and mutants were merely diversions to ensure nothing disrupted the main ritual at the tower apex."

Naya nodded in agreement, crossing her arms over her chest. "Data from the transmission station backs that theory up. The central tower is the nerve center of the city's entire cosmic energy network. If we cripple that tower, The Foundation Council's entire command grid collapses in a heartbeat."

"Then our target is crystal clear," Zulfa stated resolutely, locking a blazing gaze upon his two comrades. "We aren't waiting for them to strike our hideout. We're launching a final guerrilla strike—infiltrating straight into the city's highest tower, breaching the quarantine zone, and stopping the grand architect's ritual before time runs out."

Solidarity instantly filled the hideout. The warm, relieved debrief had successfully mapped out the enemy's defensive blind spots, fusing surface and subterranean strategies into a single, razor-sharp total assault plan.

Yet amid that surge of optimism, an anomaly shattered the quiet.

Bzzzt... click... click...

Every digital monitor screen and portable neon light in the room suddenly flickered wildly, flashing a synchronized red warning strobe. A high-frequency hum shrieked sharp from inside the console walls.

Naya gasped, vaulting out of her chair to race toward the main radar unit. "What is this?! Early warning systems just picked up a massive electromagnetic energy spike right outside the perimeter!"

Zulfa rose with her, his eyes locked on the radar display showing dozens of bright red blips racing at breakneck speed to box in the archive building hideout.

"Not just an energy spike..." Zulfa said with a tense voice, grasping the grim reality of the data. "That's a military tracking sweep wave."

Captain Danu racked his rifle roughly, his jaw locking hard. "Damn it! How did they track this location this fast?!"

Before any of them could formulate an escape route, a deafening explosion ripped straight through the ceiling overhead.

BOOM—CRACK!

The hideout's concrete roof collapsed in chunks, showering the room in a storm of dust and sharp debris. Amid the billowing smoke, a secondary electromagnetic pulse blast swept inward, killing all hideout power in an instant.

The enemy's elite strike forces had found their exact coordinates, and the final war officially began that very second.
