The Hidden Artery
82. Descent Into the Earth's Nexus
The hybrid combustion engine thrummed in a low rumble, vibrating straight through the basalt rock walls enclosing them. Inside the high-pressure, cramped cabin of the Aether-Tech magma-piercing drilling capsule, the atmosphere felt stifling and claustrophobic. The cylindrical metal chamber was illuminated solely by the flickering amber and blue glow of instrument panels on the control console.
Zulfa sat in the primary pilot seat, his left fingers dancing swiftly across the subterranean navigation keyboard while his right arm—still bound in a support sling—rested carefully at his side. Beside him, Naya sat close, tracking the earth's crust thermal gradient graphs, while in the rear seat, Captain Danu—now fully recovered from his bruises—crossed his arms over his chest as he monitored the geological radar display.
"The capsule's exterior temperature has reached four hundred degrees Celsius, Engineer," Captain Danu reported in his calm baritone, glancing briefly at the digital thermometer on the cabin wall. "If this Aether-Tech crystal cooling system fails for even a fraction of a second, the two of us will be roasted alive into charcoal inside this high-tech sardine can."
"Relax, Captain. I've accounted for the thermal expansion coefficients of basalt rock and hydrostatic magma pressure," Zulfa replied coolly, though beads of cold sweat slicked his brow. He glanced toward Naya. "How are the resonance wave readings down there, Naya? Are we getting closer to the primary Ley-Line route?"
Naya let out a long breath, sweeping a stray lock of hair dampened by the cabin heat away from her forehead. She pointed toward the green wave graphs on her computer screen. "The resonance is intensifying, Zul. But the deeper we sink into the earth's crust, the more unstable the electromagnetic interference becomes. It feels like something down there is deliberately shoving our capsule to turn us around."
"Something or not, we've already dropped thousands of meters into the earth's belly. There's no option to turn back now," Captain Danu chimed in with a faint smile, adjusting his safety harness. He looked back and forth between Zulfa and Naya. "Remember when we first planned that infiltration into the corporate tower? Feels like years ago, doesn't it?"
Naya chuckled softly, a crisp laugh that instantly broke the claustrophobic tension of the cramped capsule cabin. "You said it, Captain. Back then, we were just sprinting through grim underground sewers, dodging surveillance drones and suited mercenaries. Now? We're plowing through the earth's crust using an alien magma drill to go meet our galactic 'neighbors'."
"Quite a journey for a municipal civil engineer and his server-hacking assistant," Zulfa added with a warm smile, casting a tender look toward Naya. "Thanks for always sticking by me this far, Naya."
Naya flushed lightly, looking away in feigned embarrassment before playfully swatting Zulfa's jacket sleeve. "Just focus on driving the drill, Engineer. Don't start getting flirty at four hundred degrees."
A round of light laughter filled the drilling capsule cabin before a violent tremor struck their vehicle.
Bzzzt—Kr-r-ack!
The drilling capsule shuddered viciously, causing the metal walls around them to shriek loudly against the massively heavy rock-friction pressure.
"Attention, we've just broken through the final layer of metamorphic rock!" Zulfa announced, flipping the drill control mode from manual to full automated override. "Brace yourselves... we're about to punch out of this narrow tunnel."
With one final, forceful jolt, the steel nose of the drilling capsule punched through the thin barrier of rock.
Whoosh—Clank!
The roar of grinding stone vanished instantly, replaced by a magnificent, absolute silence. Zulfa killed the primary drill engines, then flipped on the capsule's exterior floodlights, casting a beam out through the thick glass viewport.
Naya and Captain Danu held their breath, staring in awestruck wonder at the vista unfolding before their eyes.
They now stood within a colossal ancient Ley-Line cavern stretching as far as the eye could see. The underground cavern walls weren't composed of ordinary soil or stone, but were choked with millions of giant, naturally glowing sapphire-blue and indigo ancient crystals that cast a soft, soothing light illuminating the entire cavern space like a star-studded night sky. In the quiet heart of the cavern, a flowing stream of pure cosmic energy wandered calmly, acting as the beating pulse for the entire planet's equilibrium.
"Incredible..." Naya whispered in awe, pressing both palms against the capsule glass. "This place... this is where the earth's primordial magic and energy first took root."
"A dangerous beauty," Captain Danu murmured, narrowing his eyes as he studied the crystalline energy flow patterns in the distance. "Look straight ahead, Zul. This cavern path seems blocked by something."
Zulfa nodded grimly. He amplified the capsule's main floodlights toward the center of the cavern path sitting roughly a hundred meters ahead.
Right in the middle of the Ley-Line energy stream stood a giant crystal barrier wall stretching from the cavern floor to its ceiling. The crystal radiated a fierce golden-purple glow, forging a geometric shield that completely choked off their path toward the deepest core nexus.
"That's not just a natural crystal rock formation," Zulfa said with a furrowed brow, analyzing the energy glare patterns on his scanner display. "That geometric structure... it's an ancient architectural seal."
Zulfa re-engaged the capsule's propulsion engines, inching the vehicle slowly toward the crystalline barrier wall to examine the control terminal embedded across its surface.
Yet right as the drilling capsule's nose drew within ten meters of the crystal wall—
BZZZT—WHOOSH!
Without a shred of warning, the drilling ground to a dead halt. Every instrument panel inside the capsule cabin died simultaneously, the monitor screens plunged into a sea of white static lines, and a dense shockwave of energy slammed into the capsule's hull.
Naya and Captain Danu lurched forward in shock, gripping their seats tight. "What is this?! Why did the entire electrical system shut down?!" Naya panicked.
Zulfa slammed the emergency button repeatedly, to no avail. The capsule's computer system rejected every command.
Worse still, the cabin air suddenly grew bitterly cold and heavy. From the surface of the crystal barrier wall before them, an overwhelmingly powerful psychic energy wave began bleeding outward, creeping across the capsule's iron hull to echo directly inside their minds.
This wasn't a mechanical energy wave or human-made technology. It was the pure psychic signature of the ancient Arkian lineage—a lingering fragment of primeval consciousness scanning the spiritual worthiness of anyone daring to set foot upon the sacred soil of earth's inner nexus.
