The Hidden Artery

87. The Third Heartbeat

A profound, suffocating silence gripped the ancient Ley-Line cavern. Inside the drilling capsule cabin, Naya stared blankly at the diagnostic monitor screen, which now displayed a flat, horizontal line devoid of any pulse. The low hum of the engines had faded completely, leaving only choked sobs breaking from the girl's lips.

"No... please, no..." Naya whispered, trembling as hot tears spilled uncontrollably down her knees. She gripped the capsule window glass tight, gazing out at Zulfa's motionless form sprawled across the earth's core crystal altar.

Captain Danu set his jaw hard, clenching his left fist until his knuckles turned stark white. The veteran soldier uttered not a single word, yet his eyes betrayed a profound grief for the absolute sacrifice just given by the young engineer.

Yet beyond the physical boundaries of the real world, Zulfa's consciousness drifted in a realm far transcending space and time.

At the threshold of death, the youth's awareness was hurled into an endless transcendental dimension. The pain in his right arm was gone; the heavy burden of the city's ruins and the thunder of cosmic storms had vanished. This place was merely an expansive expanse of void filled with billions of starlight particles spinning calmly like miniature galaxies resting in the palm of a hand.

Before Zulfa, a majestic entity hovered. Its form resembled a giant silhouette woven from intricate geometries of pure light and threads of time—The First Architect, the ancient cosmic entity transmitting signals from the edge of the galaxy.

The grand entity gazed down upon Zulfa with a gaze radiating the wisdom of millennia across the cosmos. Its voice echoed softly, filling every chamber of Zulfa's consciousness without relying on physical words:

"Child of humanity, scion of the foundation-bringer... Your journey has reached the mortal threshold. Your vessel has surrendered to the ruthless physical laws of the universe. Why must you bear the fragile burden of earth upon your small shoulders?"

Zulfa stared up at the silhouette of light with steady breath. He felt no fear; instead, a strange, profound tranquility cloaked his soul.

"I bear it not because I am strong, Ancestor..." Zulfa answered steadily, his voice resonating deep within the empty dimension. "I bear it because upon that fractured earth, there are people I love. There is Naya, there is Captain Danu, and millions of civilians who simply wish to live in peace and weave a tomorrow without fearing the collapse of their world."

The First Architect fluttered its geometric light wings slowly. Waves of starlight particles shifted to the rhythm of its philosophical, measured tone:

"Love and mortal suffering... The fundamental nature of your species, forever bound to fleeting, minor things. Your world is merely a speck of dust amid the vastness of the galaxy. Follow me, cast off your broken mortal shell, and merge into cosmic eternity alongside the infinite consciousness of the universe. Here, there is no more pain, no more failure, and no more death."

An absolute choice stretched before Zulfa: surrender to the offer of cosmic eternity extended by the First Architect, letting his physical shell perish upon the underground altar to live forever as part of the infinite cosmic consciousness.

An intensely tempting offer for anyone who had just endured the excruciating agony of an energy backcurrent.

Yet the image of Naya weeping behind the capsule window flashed vividly in Zulfa's memory, closely followed by his late father's warm smile handing down his first blueprint book.

Zulfa offered a faint smile, then shook his head slowly as he locked eyes with the First Architect.

"That perfect, pain-free cosmic eternity may be beautiful for an entity like you, Ancestor..." Zulfa spoke resolutely, his eyes blazing bright with conviction. "...but the beauty of human life lies precisely within its imperfection. We learn from our mistakes, we rise from our pain, and we choose to build our future with our own hands. I refuse your offer. I must return to my world."

The First Architect paused within the stillness of the transcendental dimension. The swirling starlight particles around it rippled violently, reacting to the extraordinary resilience of that human soul.

"A stubborn choice... yet fiercely alive," the First Architect spoke in a tone that slowly softened, accompanied by a magnificent smile of light. "Return to the mortal world, young engineer. Prove that the foundation you build can pierce the limits of destiny."

Whoosh—Bzzzt!

A blinding flash of radiance detonated within the transcendental dimension. Zulfa's consciousness was sucked back with lightning speed, rocketing down the corridors of time and space to slam back into his physical body sprawled upon the earth's core crystal altar.

Thump.

Inside the capsule cabin, the diagnostic monitor screen—previously tracing a silent, flat line—suddenly flickered with light.

Beep... beep...

The straight line leaped to form a sharp vertical wave curve. The first digital heartbeat rang loud from the monitor's speaker.

Naya and Captain Danu, slumped in despair moments prior, lifted their heads in unison, staring at the display with wide eyes of utter disbelief.

Beep-beep-beep!

The second heartbeat followed with an escalating rhythm, resynchronizing the entirety of Zulfa's biometric systems, which had flatlined moments before.

And right at the next second, a staggering physical resurgence erupted from Zulfa's body atop the crystal altar. A surge of pure blue energy from the Ley-Line core burst outward, enshrouding the youth's frame to violently reawaken the nerves in his right arm from total paralysis.

Zulfa blew his eyes wide open, drawing a deep gasp of air as his chest heaved violently. This was the third heartbeat—the symbol of absolute resurrection from an engineer who refused to surrender to death, ready to forge the remainder of earth's civilizational destiny with his own hands.
