The Hidden Artery

9. The Underground Alliance

A light drizzle still blanketed the wet asphalt streets of the old district as the old taxi carrying Zulfa, Naya, and Rani pulled up beside a narrow alleyway. Behind a row of shuttered vintage shops and dim, yellowish streetlamps, a faded wooden carved sign hung above the door of a small coffee shop: Twilight Coffeehouse - Est. 1984.

Zulfa glanced back at his sister, Rani, who sat in the back seat with traces of shock still lingering on her face from the black bathtub incident at the apartment.

"Rani, listen to your big brother," Zulfa said in a gentle yet firm tone, gripping his sister's shoulder. "Stay in the car with the taxi driver for a moment. Don't go anywhere, don't touch any tap water, and lock the doors from the inside. I need to meet someone inside that cafe to settle this once and for all."

Rani looked up at her brother with tear-filled eyes, her fingers twisting tightly into the fabric of her jacket. "Big Bro... please don't be long. This place is terrifying. Back at the apartment... that black water felt like it was breathing. I'm scared something's going to happen to you."

"Relax, Rani. I'm going to be fine," Naya chimed in from the front seat, offering a reassuring smile to the teenage girl. "I'll be watching over this stubborn engineer. Both of us will be right back as fast as we can."

Zulfa gave a reassuring nod, then pushed open the car door and stepped out into the chilly night air alongside Naya. They shoved open the creaking wooden cafe door, greeted by the rich aroma of aged roasted coffee beans and warm steam rising from an antique espresso machine in the corner.

The shop was entirely empty. No other patrons sat at the worn wooden tables. At the rearmost table near a window blurred with condensation, a middle-aged man in his sixties sat alone behind a mug of black coffee. He wore a weathered brown leather jacket, his hair was graying white, and his sharp eyes stared blankly toward the entrance.

"Mr. Haris?" Zulfa called out softly, stepping closer with Naya.

The middle-aged man looked up. The corners of his lips lifted into a tired, bitter smile. "Zulfa Arditama... and the archived intern who got sidelined, Naya. Sit down. I figured you'd come looking for me after that mess at the eastern residential block this afternoon."

Zulfa and Naya immediately pulled out chairs and sat across from Mr. Haris. Zulfa scrutinized the man intently. "You know about what happened at the eastern block? How?"

Mr. Haris took a slow sip of his black coffee, then set his mug down on the wooden table with a quiet, hollow clack. "Zul, I worked in the Municipal Public Works Department for thirty years before they dishonorably discharged me last month, accusing me of spreading conspiracy theories. But the reality? I was fired because I knew precisely what Aethel Corp was doing behind the bureaucratic desk."

"So, the rumors about employee purges were true?" Naya asked, leaning back against her chair.

"Not just a purge, Naya," Mr. Haris answered sharply, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "They're getting rid of anyone who knows that this city's utility network isn't just a life-support system—it's a containment cage. And right now, someone is deliberately picking the locks on that cage."

Zulfa reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his grandfather's diary, and laid it on the table alongside the silver-serpent metal access card. "We found this, sir. And I caught a vision of the past—a blood seal of forced laborers—when I touched the anomalous water at my sister's apartment. What does all of this have to do with Aethel Corp?"

Mr. Haris looked down at the aged ledger, letting out a heavy sigh as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. "You kids have really wandered too deep down the rabbit hole. But good thing you did—at least I won't die alone carrying this secret."

Mr. Haris reached into a worn leather briefcase beside his chair, unrolling a large piece of translucent tracing paper map across the cramped cafe table. The map was covered in complex coordinate grids, handwritten notes, and blood-red crosses.

"Pay attention to this," Mr. Haris said, pointing to a large red circled dot right in the center of the map. "This is the beating heart of our entire city infrastructure. The colonial engineers called it The Main Valve."

Zulfa and Naya leaned in close, studying the map intently.

"It sits directly beneath the city's central public square, right underneath Aethel Corp's primary skyscraper foundation," Mr. Haris continued in a grim whisper. "That's where raw energy from another dimension is captured, filtered, and stabilized so it doesn't tear through the earth's surface."

"Then... what is the corporate syndicate doing right now?" Zulfa asked, his brow furrowing deeply.

"They're weakening the valves one by one," Mr. Haris answered flatly. "Every sector substation that blows, every main pipe rupture, and every anomalous pressure spike you saw at Manhole 402 yesterday wasn't a technical accident. It's a structured mechanical ritual. They're intentionally loosening the locking bolts at every ley-line artery to crack open a permanent dimensional rift."

Naya covered her mouth with one hand, her eyes wide with terror. "Why open the rift? What do they stand to gain?"

"Limitless power and dominion, Naya," Mr. Haris replied bitterly. "Aethel Corp's upper management believes that by absorbing extradimensional energy directly, they can achieve transcendence and rewrite the laws of nature. They don't care if this city is torn to shreds and millions of citizens die as collateral."

Zulfa clenched both fists on the table until his knuckles turned paper-white. "We have to stop them. If we can't report this to the police because they've already been infiltrated, we have to move on our own. We'll smash their central server facility in District Nine!"

"District Nine is just a secondary research outpost, Zulfa," Mr. Haris cut in, shaking his head slowly. "If you want to end this for good, you have to go straight to the primary control hub beneath the central square—where the Main Valve is housed. There, you'll need to input a manual override code to lock the seals back into place."

Zulfa nodded resolutely. "I'm ready. I have my grandfather's journal, and this access card can be our way in."

Suddenly, Mr. Haris stopped talking. The middle-aged man's face spasmed into a rigid grimace. He clutched his chest with his left hand, his breathing turning ragged and gasping out of nowhere, as if an invisible claw were crushing his ribcage.

"Mr. Haris?! What's wrong?! Are you hurt?" Naya cried out in panic, leaping from her chair to grab his arm.

Zulfa stood up with her, watching the rapid physical deterioration happening to Mr. Haris in a matter of seconds. The man's face turned a pale, sickly blue, the veins in his neck bulging outward and throbbing violently in an unnatural rhythm.

"Zulfa... it looks like... looks like they know I've been talking to you..." Mr. Haris wheezed in a raspy voice, saliva mixed with fresh blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

"Who? Who did this to you?!" Zulfa asked anxiously, supporting Mr. Haris's shoulders.

Before Mr. Haris could answer, his eyes flared bright red, and his body locked into a violent spasm.

Cough!

Arghhh...

Mr. Haris hacked violently, coughing up a thick mouthful of fresh blood onto the cafe table. But what chilled Zulfa and Naya to the bone wasn't just the blood—from within Mr. Haris's wide-open mouth, glowing red fiber-optic threads suddenly pushed outward, writhing down his throat like a nest of living metallic worms.

"Run... hurry up and run from here...!" Mr. Haris choked out in a voice that now echoed with a chilling dual resonance, as though two separate voices had fused into one.

Before they could react, Mr. Haris's body stiffened completely, his eyes rolling back, and he collapsed lifelessly against the coffee shop's wooden floor, while wisps of red optical fiber still hissed quietly from between his clenched teeth.

Silence swallowed the aged cafe whole, broken only by the heavy, deliberate thud of combat boots approaching slowly from outside the front door.
