The Hidden Artery

90. The Boundary Monitoring Department

Morning in the city's Central District brought an entirely different atmosphere. Sunlight glinted beautifully off the modern building facades, which now stood in harmonious juxtaposition with sapphire-blue Ley-Line crystal pillars at the street corners. Traffic flowed in orderly fashion, and civilians went about their daily routines with tranquil smiles, as though the cosmic dystopian storm of days past were nothing more than a fully resolved nightmare.

Beneath the main courtyard of the grand city hall, a high-speed express lift glided smoothly through thirty meters of reinforced concrete down into the earth's belly.

Inside the elevator cabin, Zulfa stood tall in a custom-tailored, modern tactical formal suit that blended a young executive's style with Aether-Tech engineering gear. Beside him, Naya looked elegant in a dark-gray blazer, carrying a digital portfolio map containing inventory data for the new headquarters. Meanwhile, Captain Danu stood by the door with a gleaming military badge pinned to his collar.

Ding.

The elevator doors slid wide open, revealing a sight that instantly made Naya's eyes sparkle with awe.

"Welcome to our new operational headquarters, Department Head Arditama," Captain Danu announced with a broad smile, gesturing toward the sprawling expanse before them.

Zulfa stepped out, sweeping his gaze across the vast, high-tech subterranean chamber. It was the headquarters of the Boundary Monitoring Department—a classified, specialized division established directly by the city council to oversee the fragile border between modern concrete and subterranean primeval magic.

The futuristically designed hall was ringed by giant holographic displays projecting three-dimensional maps of the entire Ley-Line vein network beneath the city, linked in real-time to geological sensors and dimensional frequency scanners. Dozens of technicians, young scientists, and former resistance fighters bustled busily behind their respective workstation consoles.

"Incredible..." Naya murmured in wonder, walking up to one of the primary holographic consoles and touching its glowing blue screen. "The scale of this facility is even more advanced than the corporate labs of The Foundation Council back then, Zul!"

"Of course," Captain Danu chimed in proudly, throwing an arm around Zulfa's shoulders briefly. "The city government didn't hold back with this mandate. They know the city's best defense rests in the hands of the right man."

Suddenly, the crisp sound of firm footsteps approached from the main corridor. The mayor and the head of the city's transition council walked toward Zulfa's group, the mayor carrying a small black velvet box.

Zulfa and Captain Danu snapped to attention, offering a formal salute.

"Good morning, Department Head Arditama," the mayor greeted amicably, smiling warmly as he patted Zulfa's shoulder. "We deliberately chose this underground location so your department could operate in direct contact with earth's Ley-Line foundations without the hassle of complicated surface bureaucracy."

"Thank you for the immense trust placed in me and my team, Mr. Mayor," Zulfa replied firmly yet humbly. "The Boundary Monitoring Department will ensure that the harmony between modern architecture and primeval magic is maintained with absolute precision."

The mayor nodded in satisfaction. He opened the black velvet box in his hands, revealing a special border engineer's badge crafted from pure titanium alloy and a glowing blue Ley-Line crystal that radiated a soft luminescence.

"As a symbol of official appointment to this supreme office, please accept the badge of the city's first border engineer," the mayor said, pinning the badge neatly to the left lapel of Zulfa's jacket.

Everyone in the massive hall broke into enthusiastic applause, welcoming this historic milestone for Zulfa's new leadership. Naya smiled proudly, wiping a stray tear of emotional pride from the corner of her eye at her partner's extraordinary achievement.

"Alright, I leave the operations of this headquarters entirely in your hands, Zulfa," the mayor stated before taking his leave of the subterranean floor alongside the council staff.

Hours later, once the facility tour and introductions to all division heads concluded, Zulfa finally stepped into his private office located in the quietest corner of the underground floor.

The room was designed for maximum comfort, surrounded by soundproof glass walls looking directly out onto the main monitor display of the Ley-Line network. At the center of the room, a futuristic desk crafted from dark wood and steel awaited him.

Zulfa settled into his executive chair, exhaling a long breath of relief. He gazed down at the honorary badge pinned to his chest, then glanced toward Naya and Captain Danu, who had followed him inside.

"How does it feel to sit in the department head's chair, Engineer?" Naya teased sweetly, setting a cup of warm coffee on Zulfa's desk.

"It feels far heavier than fixing water pipelines or designing building foundations, Madam Assistant," Zulfa chuckled softly, taking a sip of his warm coffee. "Though at least the office is much cleaner than the old corporate tower ruins."

"Enjoy this quiet moment for a second, Zul," Captain Danu chimed in with a sly smirk, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against the doorframe. "Usually, a new department head's peace never lasts past their very first day on the job."

Captain Danu's words proved instantly prophetic.

Before Zulfa could retort, the primary digital console on his desk abruptly flashed a bright warning red, emitting a low-frequency alert tone that instantly riveted all three of their attention.

Bzzzt—Beep! Beep!

Naya stepped forward alertly toward Zulfa's desk, fixing her eyes on the secondary scanner console blinking to life automatically. "Zul, an anomaly signal just breached our central server! Perimeter sensors are picking up foreign energy activity!"

Zulfa shifted his focus instantly, setting his coffee cup aside to tap several keys on the main console, projecting the anomaly data details onto the holographic screen before him.

"Pull the spectral data logs from the outer sector sensors," Zulfa instructed in a serious tone, his relaxed demeanor instantly morphing into full alert mode.

Naya punched in a rapid sequence of commands on the side console. Within seconds, the 3D visualization of the city map zoomed in on the target coordinates, spawning a blinking orange blip over the city's old harbor district.

"Found it!" Naya cried with a deeply furrowed brow, studying the energy graph displayed on screen. "The anomaly is pinpointed specifically in the old harbor sector—inside an abandoned docking facility that hasn't operated since the corporate crisis."

Captain Danu narrowed his eyes sharply, stepping up to the desk. "The old harbor? That place was completely cleared out by the military months ago. What's a foreign energy source doing in a remote spot like that?"

Zulfa amplified the spectral data resolution of the anomaly point. He analyzed the wave frequency structure captured by his department's sensors. The moment that wave pattern unspooled across the screen, Zulfa's breath caught instantly in his throat.

That energy frequency pattern wasn't the residue of ordinary Arkian primeval magic, nor was it an overflow from earth's Ley-Lines.

It was a minor anomaly mirroring an alien galaxy's energy pattern—identical to the cosmic transmission from the First Architect that had nearly torn earth asunder not long ago.

Zulfa looked up to meet Naya and Captain Danu's sharp, tense gazes.

"That signal... this is the very first report landing on our desk."
