The Hidden Artery

98. The Final City Council Session

The atmosphere inside the grand municipal chamber crackled with an elegant, heavy tension. Surrounding a massive round table fashioned from aged teakwood and inlaid with modern holographic panels sat high-ranking council executives, representatives of the transition ministry, and leaders of the resistance factions who had once fought side by side with Captain Danu on the streets.

At the center of the room, standing tall before the primary podium facing a digital presentation screen, was Zulfa Arditama. Clad in a formal tactical suit with the gleaming honorary badge of a border engineer pinned to his left lapel, the young man exuded a calm yet staggering authority. Seated in the designated department audience rows, Naya and Captain Danu listened with rapt attention, offering unwavering support through their steady gazes.

"So, Department Head Arditama..." the deep voice of the council president broke the silence of the chamber, opening the emergency plenary session that afternoon. "...the report you've just delivered regarding the temple ruins in the Arkian Mountains and the cosmic relay disc left behind by the First Architect is both revolutionary and staggering for humanity's future."

The council president folded his hands over the table, locking his eyes onto Zulfa. "Meaning we are now confronted with two absolute doors of choice presented by this extraterrestrial entity: open the relay for an intergalactic alliance, or destroy it so earth remains forever isolated from universal affairs."

Instantly, the grand assembly room erupted into a buzz of activity. Heated debates among the council members flared up at once.

"We cannot recklessly rush into a decision of that magnitude!" an elderly senior official from the economic department protested anxiously, raising his right hand. "Opening an intergalactic alliance is tantamount to handing earth's sovereignty over to an entity whose origins remain completely unknown! What if their technology and magic spark fresh chaos in our newly recovered city?"

A resistance leader from the opposite row surged to his feet in swift, fiery rebuttal. "On the contrary, Mr. Official! Self-imposed isolation is a path to regression! We've seen firsthand how corporate threats and cosmic anomalies nearly leveled our city while we were utterly unprepared. Forging peaceful relations and scientific alliances with a cosmic civilization is the sole path for our civilization to leap forward!"

"Yet the risk is far too steep! We're gambling the safety of earth's entire population in the hands of an entity whose physical form is nothing more than a silhouette of light!" another official argued loudly.

That elegant, democratic diplomatic debate raged fiercely for over an hour. Argument after argument collided from conflicting perspectives—balancing a fear of the unknown against soaring hopes for a new era of universal civilization.

Zulfa remained standing composedly at his primary podium, listening to every critique and concern voiced by the city leaders with a cool head. He understood all too well that this choice extended far beyond structural engineering logistics; it touched the destiny of millions of human lives.

Noticing the assembly sliding toward a deadlock amid the escalating debate, Zulfa slowly raised his right hand, offering a calm gesture to restore quiet to the floor.

"If I may speak, Mr. Council President and distinguished members," Zulfa began, his voice steady yet commanding, instantly commanding absolute silence across the room.

The chamber fell hushed once more. Every eye locked fixedly upon the young department head.

"I deeply understand the concerns raised by my esteemed colleagues," Zulfa stated, stepping smoothly out from behind the podium to face the council members directly. "Fear of the unknown is human nature. For generations, we trapped ourselves in the belief that earth was a solitary, fragile world adrift in a hostile universe, and that any power from beyond must inherently seek our destruction."

Zulfa glanced briefly toward Naya and Captain Danu before returning his gaze to the council with eyes blazing with conviction.

"Yet, through the long journey we've traversed—from the ruins of the corporate tower to the depths of the ancient Ley-Line caverns—I've learned one vital truth: An engineer never builds a retaining wall forever merely to hide from the outside world. A designer's true calling is to build bridges," Zulfa asserted with heavy emphasis. "The First Architect offered no conquest; it offered a choice to coexist peacefully within a cosmic harmony."

The assembly hall caught its breath in a profound hush. Zulfa's words sank deep into the mind of every soul in the room, shattering the doubts and fears that had dominated the debate.

The council president stared closely at Zulfa, then offered a subtle, authoritative smile. He nodded slowly, striking his small gavel against the desk once.

Clack.

"A remarkable statement, Department Head Arditama," the president declared resoundingly. "The ministry and the city council have heard your explanation and the vision you offer. In accordance with the mandate of border protection vested in your department..."

The president rose from his chair, followed in unison by every council member present in the hall.

"...the city council hereby resolves to place its full trust in the future of cosmic diplomacy and the management of the relay disc under the Boundary Monitoring Department, led by Zulfa Arditama."

Thunderous, respectful applause immediately erupted throughout the grand chamber. The resistance leaders and council officials stood to offer a standing ovation, welcoming a historic new era of leadership.

Naya beamed broadly as she clapped with proud enthusiasm, while Captain Danu chuckled heartily, clapping a quick hand onto Naya's shoulder. "Called it—the kid never fails to win everyone over with his logic and words," Danu whispered cheerfully.

The final city council session officially adjourned by late afternoon with a resounding success.

Hours later, after wrapping up remaining bureaucratic tasks and signing the cosmic diplomacy mandate documents in the underground office, Zulfa finally stepped out of the city hall elevator alongside Naya.

The late afternoon sun greeted them with a warm, gorgeous amber glow, washing over the asymmetric city streets now resting peacefully alongside sapphire-blue Ley-Line crystal pillars.

Naya stretched her arms wide for a beat, breathing in the refreshing evening air, then turned toward Zulfa with a sweet smile curving her lips.

"An exhausting plenary session, Mr. Department Head," Naya teased lightly, tending to the collar of Zulfa's jacket with affectionate care. "You successfully convinced the entire city leadership without having to blow anything up today. An extraordinary achievement."

Zulfa chuckled warmly, slipping an arm gently around Naya's waist to draw her along the sidewalk. "Naturally. Diplomatic finesse is part of any border engineer's mandatory curriculum."

Naya snorted with amusement, glancing across the main avenue toward the city park—the very spot where the ancient anomaly crystal had first projected the alien galaxy map.

"Hey, Zul..." Naya called out softly, halting her steps for a moment to gaze at Zulfa with warm, sparkling eyes. "Since the afternoon is still young and your office duties are wrapped up for the day... how about we take a stroll together through the city park under the clear evening sky?"

Zulfa smiled sincerely, clasping Naya's fingers tightly within his own. "A flawless idea, Madam Assistant. Let's enjoy our evening."

Side by side, they walked toward the city park, strolling leisurely beneath the brightening twilight sky, striding forward into a breathtaking new future atop the foundation of a world now truly at peace and eternal.
