The Lunchbox of Friendship

3. The Mystery of the First Side Dish

That morning, the air in Class 12-Science 3 felt a little crisper. Morning sunlight filtered through the gaps in the windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Aris arrived early as usual. He set down his bag, pulled out his assignment notebook, and stared flatly at his dull blue lunchbox. He was already accustomed to his daily menu: a palm-sized clump of plain white rice wrapped in clear plastic, seasoned with fine salt from a small packet.

Suddenly, he remembered Rian's words from yesterday about the group assignment. A flutter of nervous excitement stirred in his chest. However, that feeling was quickly pushed aside by the hunger already gnawing at his stomach. Recess was still an hour away, but his mind had already drifted straight to that lunchbox.

Lunch later... just rice and salt again, he thought, trying to neutralize his expectations.

The recess bell finally echoed down the hallways. Students flooded out of the classroom like a tidal wave. Rian, Maya, and Budi lingered near the door, chatting while occasionally glancing toward the back corner. Aris, eager to avoid the crowd, decided to head to the restroom briefly before eating.

"Ris, heading to the cafeteria?" Rian asked just as Aris started to step out.

"Oh, no. I'm... I'm going to the restroom first," Aris answered briefly.

"Ah, okay. See you at the library later this afternoon," Rian replied with a smile that looked just a little too wide.

Aris nodded and hurried off. The moment Aris's back vanished behind the door, the atmosphere in the classroom shifted instantly.

Rian signaled with his eyes. "Now!"

Budi, sitting closest to Aris's desk, sprang into action. He pulled a small stainless steel lunchbox from his bag. Inside lay a thick, golden-yellow slice of omelet, studded with chopped green scallions that looked utterly appetizing. With lightning-fast movements, he hurried over to Aris's desk.

"Don't get caught!" whispered Maya, standing guard at the threshold while pretending to read a magazine.

Budi stared down at Aris's desk. He popped open the lid of the dull blue box, placed the still-warm piece of omelet right on top of the mound of white rice, and snapped it shut again with extreme care. He drew a long breath, his heart hammering against his ribs as if he had just pulled off a bank heist. He scrambled back to his seat, instantly burying himself in his phone.

Not even two minutes later, Aris returned. He walked straight to his seat, completely unaware that anything had changed inside his bag or on his desk. He sat down, pulled out his blue lunchbox, and set it before him.

Aris paused for a moment. His hand, resting on the lid, trembled slightly. Something felt off. Did the box feel heavier? Or perhaps its temperature was slightly different?

"Ah, it's probably just my imagination," he muttered quietly.

He slowly lifted the lid.

Instantly, the rich, savory aroma of fried egg wafted up, slapping his senses in the most delightful way possible. Aris froze. His eyes widened. There, sitting atop his plain white rice, was a piece of omelet—thick, fluffy, and deeply inviting.

Aris panicked, darting his gaze left and right. The classroom was nearly empty, save for a few students engrossed in their own affairs. No one was anywhere near his desk.

"What... what is this?" he whispered to himself.

He picked up his chopsticks, poked the piece of egg, and lifted it slowly. The egg was real. Not a figment of his imagination. He inhaled its scent once more; his mouth nearly watered. For the past two years, he had never tasted a side dish this luxurious in his packed lunch.

His mind raced. Was this delivered to the wrong desk? Did someone drop it here as a prank? Or maybe... did someone intentionally slip it into his box?

Aris scanned the classroom once more. His eyes landed on Rian and his friends laughing at the front desk. They looked completely unbothered, deep in discussion over a tablet screen. Aris looked back down at the omelet.

Whoever did this... thank you, he thought.

He didn't devour the egg greedily. Instead, he ate it very slowly, savoring every single bite. It tasted incredible—a blend of savory, salty, and the subtle sweetness of green onions. It was a flavor of happiness he had never experienced before. In a single bite, he felt like someone who had just won a grand prize.

At the front desk, Budi nudged Rian's arm gently. "Look, he's starting to eat."

Rian stole a glance. He watched Aris chewing with a genuine, subtle smile. There was no overwhelming suspicion, only a look of profound shock slowly melting into deep gratitude.

"He didn't throw it out," Maya whispered, her eyes turning glossy. "He's enjoying it."

"That's the point," Rian replied, feeling immensely relieved. "He needs to know he deserves something better, even if we have to force it on him a little."

Aris finished his meal down to the very last bite. He even used his chopsticks to sweep up the remaining crumbs of egg. He felt full—not just physically, but emotionally as well. A warmth spread through his entire body, beating back the chill of the usual indifference he faced from his surroundings.

Before snapping his lunchbox shut, Aris stared at the empty space for a moment. He realized something had changed. His world, once reduced strictly to white and salty, now possessed an unexpected splash of bright yellow.

He didn't know who was responsible. Yet, for the first time in a very long time, Aris felt that school wasn't such a terrible place after all. Hidden hands had started to move, and for Aris, it was the sweetest mystery he had ever encountered.

Aris tidied his bag, ready to head to the library. He had no idea what awaited him in the next chapter, but one thing was certain: he would keep bringing that dull blue box to school. No longer just to survive, but to anticipate the next small miracle.

As he walked past Rian's desk, he paused for a brief second. "Today's omelet... was really good," he muttered quietly, not looking at anyone in particular, before hurrying off.

Rian, Maya, and Budi exchanged glances. They shared a quiet laugh. Mission one was a success. And they knew this was only the beginning of something much bigger.

Aris stepped out of the classroom with a much lighter heart. He no longer felt like an isolated loner. He felt like part of something—part of a secret, and most importantly, part of a kindness that had finally found its way to him.

The curtain on chapter three closed with a warm sense of satisfaction, leaving the lingering taste of omelet on Aris's tongue and a spark of fierce morale in the hearts of his friends. Who would bring the side dish tomorrow? The mystery had only just begun.
