The Professor's Late Class

13. The Final Bell

The cold concrete floor of Classroom 3B was now soaked with tears. The soft sobs escaping from Gani, Dinda, Reno, Vanya, Arin, and Sela were no longer shrieks of primal terror in the face of death. They were the sounds of arrogance crumbling to ash, a mournful symphony of late yet deeply genuine remorse echoing from the innermost depths of their souls.

And at the front of the classroom, an emotional miracle began to unfold.

The bone-chilling cold that had frozen their fingertips slowly thawed. The metallic stench of blood and the putrid odor evaporating from Professor Danu's form vanished into thin air, replaced by the subtle scent of eucalyptus oil and the comforting smell of aged paper.

The blood-red fluorescent lights in the ceiling flickered several times before illuminating the room once more with a warm, peaceful, yellowish-white glow.

Creak...

Creak...

The sound of shifting bone echoed through the room, but this time it held no terror. Professor Danu's broken, inverted head slowly rotated back into its natural position with gentle precision. His torn eyelids healed, closing the ghastly, supernatural wounds. The dark, thick blood that had flooded his face and batik shirt faded away like smoke carried off by a soft breeze.

Within seconds, the monstrous entity that had crawled along the corridor ceiling was gone. Standing before them now was the Professor Danu they saw every week: a middle-aged lecturer neatly dressed in his batik shirt, black-rimmed glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. His face remained pale, marked with deep lines of exhaustion, but his eyes were completely devoid of hatred.

He gazed down at his six students with a profoundly soothing warmth—the look of a teacher who had finally delivered his most crucial lesson.

Slowly, Professor Danu's rigid lips curved into a faint, genuine smile—a smile they had never once seen while he was alive and teaching at the university.

TOLL...

TOLL... TOLL...

The loud chiming of the main campus bell echoed three times from the lobby, shattering the heavy silence of the night. The bell officially signaled the end of the late-night lecture.

Simultaneously, the red second hand on the ancient wall clock above the blackboard vibrated violently before sweeping forward with a sharp, crisp click.

Tick... tock... tick... tock...

Reno instinctively reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. The digital screen lit up. The frozen 09:00 PM display instantly flipped to 09:01 PM. The No Service warning in the top corner vanished, replaced by full signal bars followed by a flood of ringing notifications, missed calls, and emergency alerts.

Frozen time had thawed. The death dimension had collapsed.

Professor Danu walked slowly toward the front desk. He extended his thin hand and closed the black leather-bound book resting on the surface.

Plack.

The sound of the closing book felt immensely peaceful to their ears.

"Dinda, Gani, Reno, Vanya, Arin, Sela..." Professor Danu called their names one by one in his true voice—the raspy voice of a tired old man, yet filled with a warmth they had ignored for so long.

The six students slowly looked up, wiping tears from their cheeks. Gani was still sobbing on the floor, but his eyes were now filled with profound respect and remorse for the man standing before him.

"Tonight's final exam has concluded," Professor Danu said softly, his voice echoing peacefully through the spacious room. "You no longer need to worry about your GPA, your attendance records, or passing my course."

He paused, looking directly at the tears still pooling in Dinda's and Vanya's eyes.

"You have all passed with the highest mark a human being can achieve: Remorse."

"Remorse is the beginning of the soul's redemption," Professor Danu continued, his tone resembling a father imparting his final wisdom to his children. "Never let what happened to me happen to anyone else out there. Value your fellow human beings—not for their wealth or status, but because they are fellow souls walking the same earth."

Reno bowed his head deeply, tears dripping onto the concrete floor. "Thank you, Professor... Forgive us... Thank you for the lesson."

"Forgive me, Professor Danu... Please forgive me..." Dinda sobbed again, resting her forehead against the floor.

Professor Danu offered another soft smile. He picked up his worn leather briefcase, placed the black book and a piece of chalk inside, and slung it over his shoulder.

"Class is dismissed. You may all go home now."

The old man turned and walked toward the rear exit with a normal stride. The doorway that had previously lay shattered was now miraculously whole and wide open, revealing a bright campus corridor illuminated by clean white lights.

As he stepped out, Professor Danu's figure began to radiate a soft, warm white light. With every step he took, his body grew increasingly translucent, blending seamlessly into the cool night air drifting in through the ventilation slats. Before dissolving entirely into the blinding light outside in the hallway, his final whisper echoed gently in their ears:

"Live well, my children..."

And after that, everything settled into a serene, tranquil silence.

The radiant light faded, leaving Classroom 3B empty and dusty beneath the soft April moonlight streaming through the windowpanes. The six students remained sitting on the floor, holding hands tightly. They knew they had survived a nerve-wracking night of terror. But they also knew that starting tonight, their lives would never be the same again. They walked out of that classroom not merely as students who had escaped death, but as redeemed human beings forged through tears of remorse.
