The Professor's Late Class
15. The New Classroom
The campus janitor's words floated away into the morning air, replaced by a sudden, wild hammering in their chests. Reno, Gani, Dinda, Vanya, Arin, and Sela moved frantically, pushing past the crowd of students and faculty members frozen near the main campus entrance.
The once-clean morning air suddenly changed drastically. A thick reek of charred metal, thin plumes of dark smoke, and the sharp stench of burning fuel stung their senses.
Gani used his broad frame to force a path through, pushing past the human barricade. But the second they broke through the front line behind the police tape, their feet froze in place. Vanya's knees gave out; she would have collapsed onto the asphalt had Reno not caught her.
A horrifying sight unfolded before their eyes in brutal detail.
A large black SUV sat crushed beyond recognition. Its front end was wrapped around the solid concrete pillar of the main gate, which was deeply cracked. The frame of the vehicle was charred black, leaving behind small embers that firefighters were still trying to douse with extinguishers. The vehicle was not alone; crushed underneath its wreckage lay the twisted, burnt frames of three motorcycles.
Gani took a step back, his face draining of color. His eyes bulged as he stared at the license plate resting detached on the asphalt.
"N-No... This is impossible..." Gani whispered, his voice shaking violently. "That's... that's my license plate. B 1024 SG. That's my SUV, Reno!"
"Gani, calm down! What do you mean?" Reno tried to steady him, though his own voice quivered with terror. The hand holding Vanya's went ice-cold.
Before that question could be answered, their attention was drawn to six orange body bags lined up on the grass right beside the ambulance. Three forensic investigators were slowly unzipping the first three bags to confirm the victims' identities.
Dinda stepped forward with a hollow stare, pulled as if by an invisible force. As the zipper of the first bag slid open, a choked shriek caught in her throat.
Inside lay the rigid body of a young woman with severe burn marks across her arm, her face soaked in blood. The body wore star-shaped diamond earrings and a high-end denim shirt identical—down to the finest detail—to what Dinda was wearing right now.
The second bag opened. Inside was a heavily built young man in a shredded black leather jacket. It was Gani.
The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth bags... every single one revealed their faces. Reno, Vanya, Arin, and Sela. All six lay there stiff, lifeless.
They were looking at their own corpses.
"W-We... we're dead?" Vanya wept, staring at her own palms.
As the morning sun climbed higher, a horrifying reality dawned on them: their bodies cast no shadows on the asphalt. When Reno reached out to touch the shoulder of a student standing beside him, his hand passed right through the person like empty mist. Not a single soul in the crowd could see or hear them.
Instantly, a massive surge of memories flooded their minds, obliterating the illusion they had lived through all night.
That night, the clock read 8:55 PM. Gani was driving his SUV at a breakneck speed through the rain-slicked streets of Jakarta. Inside the vehicle, panic reigned supreme because Professor Danu had threatened to fail anyone who arrived late for the 9:00 PM makeup lecture.
"Gani, slow down! It's dangerous!" Reno screamed from the middle seat.
"I can't, Reno! If we're late, we're ruined!" Gani shot back, slamming the gas pedal deeper as they approached the campus gates.
Right in front of the gate, three motorcycles were idling in line. Gani panicked and slammed his foot on the brake pedal, but it went straight to the floor. The SUV careened out of control.
"THE BRAKES ARE DEAD! WATCH OUT!!!"
Sela shrieked hysterically. Vanya covered her eyes. In the next second... BOOM! A violent impact of metal against concrete shattered the pillar, followed by a fuel tank explosion that claimed their lives instantly.
At precisely 9:00 PM, their breathing had stopped.
"So... last night's nightmare..." Arin sobbed, her spectral tears falling silently. "We never actually walked into that classroom alive?"
"That is correct, my children."
A deeply familiar voice—authoritative, gentle, and filled with warmth—sounded from behind them. All six students turned in unison.
Standing there was Professor Danu. Gone was the broken neck, gone was the batik shirt stained with dark blood. He stood tall and whole, wearing a clean white shirt that glowed softly in the morning light. His face radiated immense serenity, bearing the proud smile of a teacher looking upon his students.
"Professor Danu..." Reno whispered, his eyes welling with tears.
"The tragic accident last night claimed your lives instantly, right as my class was supposed to begin," Professor Danu said softly, stepping closer. "Your spirits were fractured, weighed down by guilt, arrogance, and the burden of unaddressed cruelty. Had you passed on in that state, your souls would have been lost forever in darkness."
Professor Danu opened his briefcase, retrieving the black leather-bound attendance book, now pristine and free of bloodstains.
"As your professor, I could not allow my students to depart in such a state. A teacher's duty is not merely to instruct within earthly classrooms, but to ensure his students' souls are cleansed before stepping into the next realm. Last night's terror... was a trial of spiritual purification I constructed for you."
Dinda wept, looking at Professor Danu with a reverence she had never shown anyone in her life. "Thank you, Professor... Thank you for not letting us die as selfish monsters."
Gani stepped forward, bowing his head deeply before his instructor. "Please forgive me for all my wrongs, Professor."
Professor Danu patted Gani warm on the shoulder. The spiritual touch felt entirely real and soothing, washing away the lingering trauma and terror of their night of death.
"All is forgiven. Your tears of remorse last night cleansed the stains upon your souls. You have passed my final exam with a perfect mark."
Professor Danu slowly closed his attendance book, pointing toward Classroom 3B on the third floor of the old building, which suddenly radiated a brilliant, peaceful white light. The light seemed to dissolve the concrete architecture of the campus, replacing it with an infinite expanse of absolute tranquility.
"Your journey in this world has concluded. Come, let me escort you to your new classroom."
Reno smiled, reaching out with a hand that now glowed softly to hold Vanya's fingers tight. Gani, Dinda, Arin, and Sela looked at one another, nodding with the most genuine smiles of relief they had ever shared.
All six turned their backs on the crowd of people and their own physical remains at the campus gate. They walked side by side, guided by Professor Danu, who led them with quiet compassion.
One by one, their footsteps dissolved into the radiant white light, leaving the mortal world behind for a place where the true lesson of eternal peace was just beginning. The night class was officially dismissed, and they... had finally come home.
