The Underrated Son-in-Law
18. The Clash of Two Hearts
The suffocating silence hung heavy over the living room after Bella turned and walked away. Mr. Wijaya and Mrs. Ratna remained on their knees, staring at her receding figure with eyes full of absolute despair. Aris stood motionless, slowly uncrossing his arms as his expression hardened like a rock battered by crashing waves.
Aris took long, aggressive strides, catching up to Bella before she could reach the exit. He clamped his hand onto her arm, spinning her around to face him.
"What do you think you're doing, Bella?" Aris asked in a low voice, suppressing the rage boiling beneath his chest. "I am giving them the lesson they should have learned a long time ago. Do you want them to stomp all over you the second they get their power back?"
Bella shoved his hand away with a fierce, violent motion. Her eyes blazed—no longer meek, fragile, or submissive. "The lesson is over, Aris! Seeing them kneel in front of me just now... that wasn't a victory. That was an insult to my own dignity as their child. Do you honestly think destroying them like this is protecting me?"
Aris let out a bitter, mocking laugh, stepping closer until Bella was pinned against the wall. "Dignity? You talk about dignity to people who treated you like a slave in your own home for a whole year? You are far too naive, Bella! Your kindness will only become the weapon they use to ruin us all over again!"
"I don't care!" Bella screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I pity them. They are my parents, Aris! Maybe they are cruel, maybe they are greedy, but I cannot watch them be broken down to this point. I don't want to turn into a monster like you!"
That final word hit Aris like a whip across the face. The word "monster" echoed through the entire room. Aris froze, his eyes locking onto Bella with a flash of unbridled fury. His usually controlled composure flushed deep red.
"A monster?" Aris repeated the word, his voice trembling with raw emotion. "So after everything I've done to rescue you from their clutches, after I sacrificed everything just so you could live freely—you call me a monster?"
Aris whipped his head toward Mr. Wijaya and Mrs. Ratna, who were still kneeling on the floor. He pointed an accusing finger at them. "Look at them, Bella! Look at how they're staring at you right now! They don't see you as a beloved daughter; they see you as a golden ticket back to their opulent lifestyle! If you forgive them now, tomorrow they will sell you off to another man like Rian for a quick profit!"
"That is my business!" Bella retorted, refusing to back down. "At least I haven't lost my humanity, unlike you, who threw away your heart!"
Aris felt his blood boil. Bella’s innate goodness was the very trait he used to adore, but now, that same trait felt like a dagger thrust straight into his chest. He had bled, cast aside every emotion, and employed ruthless methods to secure their future, yet Bella chose to side with the very people who had tormented them.
"Fine," Aris said coldly, his voice dropping into a flat, dangerous register. "If you prefer to remain a dutiful daughter to ungrateful parents rather than a partner who sees reality for what it is, then go ahead. But don't blame me when they stab you in the back again tomorrow, because I won't be there to protect you."
Aris turned and stormed off, his heavy footsteps echoing through the room. Every stride radiated suppressed fury. He swept past Mr. Wijaya and Mrs. Ratna without giving them a single glance.
"Aris!" Mrs. Ratna cried out in a pathetic, whimpering voice.
"Get out of here before I change my mind and throw you both in prison!" Aris roared without turning back, his voice rattling the glass windows of the suite.
Scared out of their minds, Mr. Wijaya and Mrs. Ratna scrambled to their feet and bolted out of the penthouse, leaving Bella slumping helplessly onto the floor.
Bella stared blankly at the tightly closed doors. She had just won—she had saved her parents' remaining dignity—yet she felt a hollow, agonizing void inside her chest. She had won the argument, but she had lost the only person who was supposed to stand by her side.
In his study, Aris slammed a crystal glass onto his desk, shattering it into a million pieces. He had never felt this angry in his entire life. He felt betrayed by the very innocence he had fought to protect. For an entire year, he had lived under a cover identity, suppressing his ego and swallowing his pride. And now, at the pinnacle of his power, the woman he loved most viewed his entire sacrifice as a sin.
"I did this for you, Bella," he whispered into the quiet room, his voice sounding agonizingly fragile. "Why can't you understand?"
Aris sank into his executive chair, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sparkling city lights below. For the first time, the ruler of Nexus Global felt utterly defeated by something money could never buy—the understanding of the woman he loved.
That night became the coldest night either of them had ever endured. Bella remained sitting on the living room floor, while Aris stayed locked inside his study. The distance between them, once just a few feet, now felt like an unbridgeable chasm. Their bond was no longer merely about wasted love, but about two shattered hearts divided by a profound difference in principles.
