The Underrated Son-in-Law

20. The Final Harbor

Six months had passed since Aris's departure. The penthouse, once cold and suffocating, had become Bella's place of quiet reflection. She no longer cared about wealth or status. She had transferred the vast majority of Nexus Global's assets back to charitable foundations and focused entirely on tracking down where Aris had gone.

During her months of solitude, Bella had come to realize one absolute truth: she had never loved a man with money—she loved Aris. She missed the man who sat on the floor sharing instant noodles with her, the man who was awkward the first time he held her hand, the man who willingly swallowed every ounce of pain just to see her smile. The money and power were merely noise obscuring the pure sincerity between them.

Through her remaining business connections, Bella finally traced Aris's whereabouts to London. Without a single moment of hesitation, she booked the very first flight out. She didn't care if she had to beg or drop to her knees—this time, she would be the one to fight for him.

London welcomed Bella with a light fog and a bone-chilling mist. Aris’s location was detected at a historic estate on the outskirts of the city, where a grand private family banquet was underway.

Bella managed to sneak through the rear gardens, hiding behind the lush shrubbery, peering into a dining hall illuminated by grand crystal chandeliers. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as her eyes fell upon the man she longed for. Aris looked far more relaxed, wearing a suit that lacked his usual rigid, intimidating edge.

Yet, the breath caught instantly in Bella’s throat. Sitting beside Aris was a stunning woman in an elegant silk gown. They were conversing intimately, and the woman reached out to touch Aris’s arm with a level of familiarity that sent Bella’s world crashing down.

An elderly gentleman—who appeared to be a prominent business associate—raised his crystal glass: "To Aris and Elena! This union will bring together two of the greatest corporate powerhouses in Europe!"

A marriage?

Bella’s chest tightened painfully as thousands of horrifying scenarios flooded her mind. Had Aris forgotten her entirely? Was this woman her replacement in his darker, grander world?

Bella couldn't bear to hide in the shadows any longer. Driven by sheer desperation, she broke out of the gardens and barged into the dining hall, ignoring the frantic shouts of the security guards trying to restrain her.

"Aris!" Bella cried out into the sudden, dead-silent room.

Aris froze. The wine glass in his hand nearly slipped from his grip. He stared at Bella with wide, disbelieving eyes—as if unable to process that the woman he had walked away from was now standing right there, in the middle of London's elite.

"Bella?" Aris’s voice trembled.

Bella paid no mind to the gorgeous woman sitting beside him. She strode directly toward the head table with steady, resolute steps. "I don't care about this company. I don't care about your business or your immense wealth. I didn't come here to ask for anything, Aris."

The woman beside Aris, Elena, looked at Bella in confusion, while whispers rippled across the room.

"I came here," Bella continued, tears welling up in her eyes as her gaze locked onto his, "because I finally realized that during our entire year at the Wijaya house, I never loved the 'wealthy Aris.' I loved the man who bought me vitamins when he was starving himself. I loved the man who quietly shielded me in the rain. I loved the man you hid behind that 'emperor' mask."

Aris stood up, no longer caring about the stunned stares of the guests surrounding him. He stepped out from behind the table and closed the distance between them.

"You misunderstand, Bella," Aris whispered, glancing briefly at Elena before turning his longing-filled eyes back to Bella. "This isn't an engagement. This is a forced business arrangement. I have never wanted anyone other than you."

Bella was stunned. "But... they just said—"

"Those were their assumptions. I never agreed to anything," Aris cut in quickly. He reached out and cupped her hands—the very same hands he had held in the hospital when he promised her the world. "I left because I thought I was poison to your life. I left because I couldn't bear to see you get hurt by my world ever again."

Bella shook her head softly. She reached up to touch Aris's face, feeling the comforting warmth of his skin—a warmth she had only been able to dream of for six long months. "My world is you, Aris. No matter how dark or ruthless your world gets, I would rather be there with you than anywhere else without you."

Aris didn't wait another second. In front of every stunned guest in the hall, he pulled Bella tightly into his arms—an embrace meant to make up for every lost moment. He pressed a long, grateful kiss against her forehead.

"I don't need the world," Aris whispered into her ear. "All I need is you, right by my side—without secrets, and without lies."

Elena, the woman beside them, simply smiled warmly and raised her glass in a toast. "It appears I just lost a fiancé I never actually had. Congratulations, Aris."

Aris led Bella away from the bustling hall, taking her out into the moonlight-dappled gardens. He looked down at her with a gaze that ran impossibly deep—a gaze no longer cold, but brimming with pure, unadulterated love.

There was no more bitterness. No more revenge. All that remained were two souls who had finally found their way back home to each other. Aris had laid down his heavy "emperor's" mantle, and Bella had reclaimed the man she had once taken for granted.

Under the quiet London sky, Aris vowed to himself that he would never let go of her hand again. For he finally understood that true wealth was never about what his fortune could buy, but about the woman who chose to stand firmly by his side—even when the world was crumbling around them.

And thus, their story—once filled with scars and betrayal—finally found its peaceful final harbor: a love that had braved the fiercest storms, and emerged as the ultimate triumph.
