Unlucky Wedding Event

10. The Bloody Dress (Or Is It Just Sauce?)

Absolute panic struck the very core of Mira’s central nervous system the moment she saw that dark brown stain—bearing a striking resemblance to the map of the Indonesian archipelago—permanently affixed to the chest of her beloved baby pink dress. Beneath the blinding sparkle of Balai Sudirman's crystal spotlights, the peanut-and-sweet-soy mixture shone with a wet, glistening sheen, mimicking the climatic sequence of a low-budget local horror movie where the protagonist has just been impaled by a weapon drenched in thick, fresh blood.

"This is a disaster... a national level code-red emergency!" Mira hyperventilated internally, clutching her own chest. "If I keep walking around like this, people aren't going to mistake me for an elite wedding guest anymore—they'll think I'm a traffic accident victim who wandered into a reception by mistake!"

Disregarding the bewildered stares of the batik-clad gentleman who had just plowed into her—or the thoroughly disgusted glares of the society aunties loitering near the sate station—Mira executed a jerky, robotic pivot around her stiff, concrete-stabilized updo. She broke into a frantic, limping hustle (or rather, a one-legged skip-hop) away from the buffet zone.

Mira hunted desperately for a safe sanctuary hidden from public scrutiny. Her gaze locked onto a colossal black marble pillar tucked away in a quiet corner of the room, shielded behind an artificial floral display that emitted an aroma suspiciously similar to a budget motel bathroom air freshener.

Reaching the relative safety behind the pillar, Mira dropped straight into a squat, her hands trembling violently as she fished a packet of lemon-scented antiseptic wet wipes out of her mini bag—a parting gift from the convenience store earlier that morning.

"Stay calm, Mira, stay calm. It's just peanut sauce, not an ancient witch's curse. It can still be salvaged using traditional home remedies," Mira muttered, gasping for air as she tried to calm her racing heart.

She ripped open the wet wipe packet, yanked out a moist white sheet, and without a second thought, began scrubbing furiously at the massive sauce stain marring her chest.

Rub to the left... scrub to the right... press down hard...

Instead of fading or lifting away into the fabric of the wipe, the exact opposite happened. Because the baby pink tulle fabric was exceptionally thin and loosely woven, Mira’s overly aggressive scrubbing motions only succeeded in smearing the oily peanut sauce outward in every direction. The stain, which had previously resembled a neat little island, now mutated into an expansive Asian continent covering her entire chest, intensified by a sharp cocktail of artificial lemon fragrance and fried garlic.

Mira froze mid-scrub, staring down at her handiwork with eyes wide in sheer horror.

"Oh sweet lord! This has officially turned into a grotesque modern abstract expressionist painting!" Mira whimpered in utter despair, lightly smacking her forehead—which predictably yielded a hollow clack-clack-clack sound as it collided with her own bulletproof hair helmet. "Instead of cleaning it, my chest now looks like a parking lot soaked in palm oil!"

Just as Mira sat squatting behind the pillar, lamenting the absolute destruction of her dress, a pair of small feet encased in children's dress shoes suddenly halted right in front of her.

Mira slowly raised her head.

Towering over her stood a little boy of about five years old, clad in a pristine navy blue miniature suit. The toddler clutched a small plate piled with cream puffs, his eyes bulging wide as he absorbed Mira’s complete ensemble from her crown down to her stained chest.

Mira forced a stiff, agonizingly polite smile, pasting on the friendliest expression she could muster while a warzone of emotional trauma raged beneath the surface. "Hello there, little man... what are you doing all by yourself over here? Where's mom, sweetheart?" Mira cooed in an exaggerated, high-pitched sing-song voice, baring a row of teeth stained by bright crimson lipstick.

The little boy didn’t answer her greeting. Instead, he leaned forward, inspecting the gigantic peanut sauce stain plastered across Mira’s baby pink bodice with wide, innocent, utterly unfiltered curiosity.

After a few seconds of intense visual analysis, the toddler extended a tiny index finger, pointed dead-center at the stain, whipped his head around, and hollered at the top of his unfiltered lungs:

"Mom! Mom, look at that!" the kid screamed across the crowded venue, calling out to his mother. "Mom, why does that lady's dress have dog poop spilled all over it? It's so gross, and it smells like peanuts!"

Instantly, every single head belonging to the wedding guests lingering near the pillar whipped around in unison toward the source of the noise. A wave of audible gossip began buzzing through the air, while the child’s mother hurried over looking thoroughly mortified, snatching her son's hand away while throwing Mira a look dripping with equal parts disgust and suspicion.

"Oh goodness, I am so sorry, miss... kids will be kids, you know how they say whatever pops into their heads when they see something weird," the mother stammered rapidly before practically dragging her child away into the crowd, putting maximum distance between themselves and the ominous black marble pillar.

Mira slumped backward, collapsing straight onto the cold marble floor. Her Super Saiyan bangs drooped forward pathetically in response to the crushing weight of her emotional defeat.

"Dog poop..." Mira whispered, her eyes welling up with the hot, salty tears of a universal tragedy. "I got all gammed up since dawn, limped around on one broken heel, rode an ojol through a psychological thriller, nearly got thrown out by security, and now I'm getting roasted by a toddler who thinks I've been slimmed by a stray hound at my ex's high-society wedding."

That night, behind the marble pillars of Balai Sudirman, Mira officially entered into the registry of history that this day was, without a single shadow of a doubt, the most catastrophically unfortunate day in the entire timeline of human civilization.
