Unlucky Wedding Event

21. Escaping Through the Back Door

After accepting the extra souvenir box wrapped in a rose gold ribbon from Aris—a deeply romantic cinematic moment unfortunately tainted by the cold, hard fact that one of her shoes was heelless and her dress reeked of a unholy cocktail of sate sauce and dish soap—Mira abruptly snapped back to reality. Her internal threshold for enduring public humiliation had officially bottomed out, breaching deep down into the planet's tectonic crust.

She stared at Aris with a rigid smile, muttered a stuttered, frantic thank-you, and spun around on her heel. She couldn't bear to stand inside the glittering, luxurious Balai Sudirman ballroom for another second. Her social, mental, physical, and financial energy tanks for the day had run completely dry, hitting a hard, absolute zero.

"Alright, Aris... or whatever your wooden-ladle-rescuing guardian angel name is, thanks a million! But right now, I've got to evacuate myself before venue security calls in the bomb squad," Mira muttered under her breath.

Instead of navigating her way back through the main red-carpet gauntlet where elite wedding guests and Siska the gossip queen were still busy trading snide remarks, Mira opted for an emergency extraction route: the service corridor and the building's back door.

With a lopsided limp that produced a distinct clack-drag... clack-drag rhythm against the rough concrete floor, Mira trudged down the utility hallway normally reserved for catering staff and janitorial teams. Lining the walls were towers of empty mineral water jugs, carts overflowing with soiled tablecloths, and the savory, lingering scent of leftover kimlo soup mixed with harsh industrial floor cleaner.

"Oh, seriously, what kind of tragic soap opera storyline is this?" Mira grumbled, wiping a bead of sweat off her forehead that threatened to smear the remaining foundation of her clownish blush. "Whenever characters in K-dramas escape their ex's wedding, they usually drive away in a luxury sports car while dramatic rain falls so gracefully. Me? I'm sneaking out the back of a catering warehouse carrying a wooden rice ladle, wearing a failing concrete updo, and smelling like lemon-scented sate!"

Even so, Mira forced her crippled stride to pick up the pace. Every so often, she ducked behind a stack of corrugated cardboard boxes whenever a catering crew member rushed past pushing a cart of dirty dishes, terrified they’d mistake her for a lost intruder trying to sneak a free facial wash at the utility sink.

After navigating the stuffy, labyrinthine service corridor for a full, grueling ten minutes, Mira’s hand finally shoved open a heavy, matte-green fire exit door that emptied out directly into the alleyway behind the building.

The moment the metal door swung wide, Mira stepped out into the open air, gasping for the cool breeze of a late Jakarta afternoon.

Yet, instead of being greeted by the soothing relief of a calm twilight, the scene outside made the blood in her veins instantly run cold.

The sky above Jakarta had abruptly shifted into a bruised, menacing pitch-black shade, looking remarkably like an unwashed pan left over from a three-day-old stew. Massive, churning storm clouds rolled low over the high-rise rooftops, tearing open with blinding flashes of lightning followed by earth-shattering thunderclaps that rattled the car windows parked across the lot.

A sudden, fierce gust of wind screamed through the alley, whipping up street dust, plastic wrappers, and dry leaves into a chaotic frenzy. The tranquil afternoon had mutated in a heartbeat into the set piece of a low-budget apocalyptic sci-fi flick.

Mira stood frozen on the building's back porch, clutching her wooden ladle souvenir box tight against her chest while her Super Saiyan antenna bangs whipped violently in the gale, pointing straight up toward the angry heavens.

"Are you kidding me right now?" Mira whimpered, her eyes bulging with sheer horror as she stared up at the pitch-black sky preparing to unleash a biblical flood. "This morning the sky looked depressed, this afternoon I got cursed with peanut sauce, tonight I’m forced to flee through a catering basement... and now the universe wants to drop a full-blown hurricane on my head to round out the misery?!"

Before Mira could take a single step in search of shelter, another massive bolt of lightning split the air, accompanied by a deafening roar of thunder, and the first giant, heavy raindrops slammed down against the concrete with full velocity. Jakarta's iconic, merciless monsoonal downpour had officially begun.
